The 1st4 *also* consist of Happy on keys and a programmed drum sequence. Do they sound anything like Equipoise? No. What I meant was that there is a lot going on. *ping* on one speaker, *pong* on the other, tempo changes, different sounds and all that. Warpaint was a step in that direction, but sparseness or no sparseness there's a lot more going on in this one. I am sure that 'Runners' could have been made without the bullet-like *zap* for example. The percussion on 'I say' is another example. It's not *necessary* but it adds to the song's feeling. And having said that, I will sleep with a clear conscience, I will sleep in peace. :) Angelos ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 14 Feb 93 00:40:43 PST From: stevev@miser.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Re: a clarification of sorts Angelos Kyrlidis writes: > Well, let *me* clarify what I meant. Y'know, that's funny. To me _Equipoise_ sounds sparser than _Warpaint_. Perhaps it's just that I've been listening to _Warpaint_ so long that I'm mentally filling in all the spaces; certainly repeated listenings to _Equipoise_ are making it seem less sparse and more interesting. I'm really beginning to like "Closer". In some ways the songs on _Equipoise_ also seem less emotionally intense than earlier Happy songs, and "Closer" is the most intense song on the big E. ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 14 Feb 93 5:05:21 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: ecto #406 Tracy uh ohs: > EC> EQUIPOISE > EC> --------- > > Uh, oh. In a weird synchronicity, while looking through The Reader (Chicago's free music and other things paper) I saw that Larry Coryell was playing here this weekend! I wish I had an extra Equipoise, or the money to buy one at Tower (which I haven't checked yet) so I could go to where he's playing and give it to him. Darn, bad timing! I know the story behind "Closer" and I will pass it along, but not until everyone's gotten their album. Someone remind me in a few weeks. That is, if people *want* to hear what it's really about. (It's actually easy to guess, and perhaps most people probably will, but I can confirm it. If you hazard a guess in the near future, *PLEASE* put ***SPOILER*** warnings on your post. We're forgetting about the Ectophiles who don't have it yet. Mike Mendelson has already said that he avoided reading about the album. I hated the *song* "The Dreaming" when I first heard it, but after many listens fell in love with it. After the song, the *album* The Dreaming was a piece of cake, though it took a while to get used to it too. Now it's by *far* my favorite Kate album. Equipoise is already my favorite Happy album (uh...along with Ecto) so it's just individual taste (and how hard you work an album) that determines favorites, I guess. > "Daddy bade me to keep things calm" That's how I heard it too, but she's singing "begged." > (Hmmm. I talked to Kevin for a few minutes last night and he said that about 400 were botched exactly like that. They went through and pulled at least 300 of them, so you might just want to think about it before you send it back. It *is* a collector's item, however dubious.
