Yes, I agree that the slant of the song is "why? we can't even take care of ourselves" which made my first thought of "hey we ought to send this to the folks who put the project together" to "uh, maybe that's not such a good idea." It is a bit cynical. I *love* how the voices sing the line "save our souls." > Anyway, I'd like to tell everybody how I discoverd Happy's > music. I'll try to make it brief! Thanks for the story! I only got to meet Happy's mom for a few minutes at the Penn Towers party. She was telling how she gave Happy her first guitar when Happy was 11. I can't *wait* until Happy starts making videos! It's so funny, Happy has 6 albums now, and yet she's really only just begun. We're lucky to be here at the "beginning." We have videos and CD singles and live albums and all that still to look forward to. It's an amazing feeling for me. I think back to when I was one of a handful of people outside Albany, NY who had ever heard of her, not knowing if she would continue with music and what would happen. Does anyone want to volunteer for the others? I can do a couple more. I could do "Temporary and Eternal" and "Closer" unless someone else is dying to type those in. When I've finished transcribing the lyrics from the CD booklet, I then listen to the song *very* closely on headphones and make adjustments. There are numerous places where what's printed isn't what Happy sings. There are also places where Happy sings something that isn't in the lyrics. I'm sure that there will be lots of discussion about those bits. The only one I could find in "Cohabitants" is... > I've not been here before > I think I've unlocked the door > > to my world ^^ ^^ ^^^^^ That's a guess. Does anyone hear anything different? Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 10 Feb 93 3:40:34 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Pat Tessitore Oooops, I realized that I misspelled his name in that last post. Anyway, here's the story/post I referred to... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vickie here. Today (11-26) is Pat Tessitore's birthday. He won't see this, but HB anyway. For the people who don't know who this very important dude is... He's the owner of Cathedral Studios in Rensselaer, NY, just outside of Albany. This is the place where all of Happy's music has been recorded. Way back in 1984 Happy's mother arranged for her to start working there as an apprentice engineer, to provide a start into the recording business. Happy wanted to learn the technical side of the recording process so it was perfect for her. Pat asked Happy if she wanted to record her own music while learning the equipment. That's how it all began. Many of the songs on I and II are exercises to get to know the equipment, and how to do things like overdubs and echoes and whatnot. They really weren't recorded with the intention of ever being released on albums for the public, just to get the songs on tape and learn the ropes. (Pardon me while I swoon in awe)...... Pat recognized her talent right away and encouraged her to continue recording her music, knowing that she had no money to pay for recording time. He would check the schedule and whenever there was free time between sessions, he would call Happy and she would race over to the studio to work on another song. Happy met Kevin at Cathedral. Pat introduced them. OK, so she had all these songs on various tapes and Kevin knew what they sounded like because Pat played some of them for him. Kevin had started his label (Aural Gratification) to release his own music on cassette, and encouraged Happy to gather up all of her songs and he would release them. There turned out to be more than would fit on one cassette, so Vol. I and Vol. II were born at the same time. Pat continued to give Happy free time to work on songs and still does, to this day. Warpaint was so cheap to make because of the kindness and support of Pat Tessitore, who waived most studio fees because he believes in Happy. This paragraph is confidential to Ecto. H&K will pay him back when Happy has broken through and has the money. He's an important name in Ectocyclopedia Britannica because without him, well, none of us would be here now. I love chains, don't you? Happy's mum & dad Happy Rhodes Pat Tessitore....enabled Happy to record the music Kevin Bartlett...put that music onto cassette Dore Stein.......took the music to San Francisco Bob Davis........received music from Dore Stein and sent to John Reimers Kate Bush........connection between Bob Davis and John Reimers John Reimers.....my friend who turned me on to Happy Kate Bush........connection between John Reimers and Vickie Vickie Mapes.....yours truly Kate Bush........connection between Vickie & Doug Alan Doug Alan........started Love-Hounds Kate Bush........connection between Doug and Jessica Jessica Dempski..LH reader and main Ecto Goddess This could go on and on if I were to include everybody's mom's & dads and their mom & dads and....but this is the basic chain that led us all here to this fuzzy blue wonderland. It may seem silly to put Kate in there 4 times, but without the Kate connections, we wouldn't be here either. Anyway, Happy Birthday to Pat Tessitore! Well I'm one for a start. You can tell by the whingeing! It's a (sometimes none too friendly) Australian slang term for a Briton, in the same vein that we in the UK refer to Yanks (Americans), Krauts (Germans), Frogs (French), Eye-ties (Italians), & Kiwis (New Zealanders) among many others. Being such a xenophoic race we have lots of these derogatory terms. As with many insults, they can also be intended in a friendly fashion. Just too keep our Happy references straight, I'll straighten these minor disagreements out. The oblong plaque with the controversial "anatomically correct" pictures, along with a schematic of our solar system and other tidbits was sent out on the Pioneer spacecraft. These spacecraft also included a hardened LP, complete with playing needle, which included sounds of earth from the "hello's" in different languages to sounds of water and other natural items to whale voices. The Voyager spacecraft held the aforementioned gold CD with a much wider variety of multi-media items, including pictures of people, animals, and earth scenery (My porous memory says there were about 80-100 pictures on the disc, chosen after some amazingly vicious in-fighting among the usual suspects). The disc also held graphics displaying how far our science and technology had reached, including (after much heated debate) a nuclear bomb. As Ken mentioned, there was an symbolic engraving giving the instructions (I hope it wasn't by the writers of my CD player manual :) ) for retrieving the information from the disc. The chances of anyone every finding either of these tiny spacecraft is non- existent. Even treasure-hunting future humankind wouldn't be able to find them, once they fall silent. Yet it's interesting how far our information storage technology advanced in just the relatively short six (?) years between the launch of the two sets of spacecraft, from an LP and plaque to a CD. Other than > _Ingenue_, it's the torchiest album she's done. I was afraid that the answer might be something like that. Covers of old country classics does *NOT* sound like something I would appreciate. Having heard her lauded many times in this group I have looked at CDs of hers from time to time, but as they've always been filed under "Country" and had very country-looking covers, I've steered clear up to now. "Ingenue" was filed n the main "Pop/Rock" section and I was in a "try something new" mood (hence also the Rainbirds and Indigo Girls CDs) so I decided to take the plunge. > I take it you like _Ingenue_, eh Steve? Very much so. It's early days yet but so far I'm enjoying "Ingenue" more than any of the other CDs I picked up in that bunch. It's a pity she's not released more music in that vein. Perhaps it will set the tone for her subsequent releases... -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. According to kd, she's left country music forever. kd did a great version of Cole Porter's "So In Love" on the _Red, Hot, and Blue_ compilation album. She said that it was that song that made things fit into place as to what her new sound would be. Have you heard it, Steve? Also, _Barefoot_ from her feature film "Salmonberries" runs along the same musical vein as her new stuff. As far as I know, _Barefoot_ is only available on her home video "Harvest of Seven Years: Cropped and Chronicled". special K ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
