Re: Other stories from yesterday and today RE: this n that ======================================================================== From: r.lovejoy1@genie.geis.com Date: Tue, 9 Feb 93 21:30:00 EDT Subject: The New Guy... Hello Ectophiles! This is only my second attempt at the internet, and I'd like to thank those of you who responded to my introductory post. Please bear with me, as 1> I'm on Genie, and don't have full access to the Internet. Over here we have a sort of mail drop-off/pick up. 2> I am overwhelmed at the depth of Ecto. Far from a simple "Yay Happy" group, you are many and diverse. A quick note at the beginning - I was reading the digest and one of the posts mentioned the song "Save Our Souls" as an attempt to communicate with aliens. (Sorry I don't have names down yet; it was a wonderful post from a true fan!) I thought to have heard it as a commentary on humans sending the gold disc into space (the Voyager disc, remember - has Mozart, video, text, information - and a plaque with human figures and a map of our system) seeking redemption from aliens while here on earth we are the number one offender of speciesism, wiping out all sorts of flora and fauna. Pity our emptiness! Anyway, I'd like to tell everybody how I discoverd Happy's music. I'll try to make it brief! I live in Cherry Hill, NJ, near Philly. One Saturday as I was driving to the store, WXPN played Feed the Fire and I had to pull over and sit and listen. Before long I was directed to 21st Century sound and had the album, which I loved! Soon enough, the Philly concert was announced. I got tickets and my wife and I went to the show. We looked around and saw what seemed to be some nice seats in the middle, sat down... and found ourselves next to Happy's Mom and Stepdad! We talked at length about Happy and her career. And it was a magnificent concert, simply the best I've ever seen! Before long, XPN announced the release of the back catalog and signing at 21st Century. I arrived shortly before the group. In a flash, there they were! A long line had formed for Happy, so I went up to Kevin and just started talking. I told him I was in video postproduction, and he told me that he scored for video. He mentioned some names I knew from when I lived in Boston. I asked if was going to do a video for Happy's upcoming album, and offered my services. I'm a colorist, which is a person who transfers film to videotape color correcting it in the process. He was happy to accept my offer. I went to the Happy line clutching my new CDs, and as she first looked at me, she said "I know you!" My heart stopped, and I mumbled something about never having met her before, but as I looked into her eyes, I knew we were both from the same place...it's hard to explain! The Susanne White, her manager, introduced herself and we talked about the upcoming video and what I could do to help out. In the conversation, she mentioned that they forgot to get a tape of the XPN interview. I told her that I had made one and would be glad to give her a copy. She responded that they were not staying near Bryn Mawr, but in Cherry Hill, NJ! :) Well, I said, I live on a small out-of-the-way street but I'll give you detaied directions. As I began, her mouth dropped! Turns out she grew up across the street from where I now live! I'm told I was quite a topic of discussion over dinner that night! To this day it still amazes me. Hope I didn't bore you all with that. Anyway, the latest news I have is that production of a video will begin around the end of April. I'll be more specific as details come in. Meanwhile, thanks for bearing with me and Happy Listening! I also really love Laurie Freeloves Smells like Truth. In fact on the last gift project my selection was Arms of a Dream. The song makes me cry every time I listen to it. The album is inconsistent, but the songs I like are _very_ powerful - at least *i* think they are :) I'm Patiently awaiting the arrival of Equipoise. I sent my order in last week - so i'm not expecting it to arrive for a while yet, if it ends up arriving at all ( i have never lost so much snail mail til I moved down here ). I'm trying not to get too excited, or have too many expectations about the album, so I won't be disappointed (not that I would be anyway i mean this is Happy). Hopefully I won't have to wait too much longer though. btw just searching here for a sec.... Does ANYONE have a copy of the film The Navigator??? It was directed by Vincent Ward, and filmed in New Zealand. I saw the movie about 3-4 years ago - it's absolutely wonderful. I forgot the name for the longest time, and just rediscovered it today. I've been searching for this film on video forever and would practically do anything to get a copy of it. I appreciate any advice, suggestions etc... Oh and if you happen to see this film in the video store rent it! You've obviously never heard Vickie's storie about the series of coincidences that led to her first conversation with Kevin and Happy... This, of course, is not to say that Bob's story wasn't cool to read! (I'll leave further elucidation to Vickie; it's her story and I'd probably botch it. Hey look Vicki I finally made it here! :-) Who else is here that I know? I look forward to discovering what ever else I can about Happy. It's been only a few weeks now since I got my first ever listen to her music and I'm already hooked. So where do I get the discography? FAQs sheet?? Jessica is going to send me an index to the archives so it might all be in there ( this is all new to me still ;-) ) My first major question is ... Just how do I get Happy CD's through normal channels in Australia? I had to move Heaven and Earth to get my copy of WarPaint imported. Who distributes her music in the states? Since I got WarPaint I have played it to many of my friends, most have been hooked straight away and want to know how to get there own copy. That's when I have to admit that I don't know of an easy way for them to find Happy music :-( Last night was a good example I played WarPaint to about 5 new people, EVERYONE wanted to go out and get there own copy. I explained things to them so now I'm doing yet another heap of tapes of the album ( I don't like to just tape an album like this but how else do these folks get to enjoy this music and spread the word about Happy?? ) What else, ... Oh ya, my favorite HR song at the moment is WWMFC, but I'm still looking for a HR quote to include in my .sig. That's about all I can think to ramble on about at the moment. I look forward to my time here with Ecto. If the amount of traffic keeps up I may be changing to the digest form, though I prefer to get my mail continuously during the day and not in one hit that I have to wait for. >.. don't forget to include your shoe size! :) Hmmm ... :-) Ok I'm size 10 and half -extra- broad (we Aussies tend to have wide feet since we around in only bare feet or only thongs (Poms call them flip-flops) a lot. ======================================================================== : Graham Dombkins /\/\ : Personal Computer Services / / /\ : BHP Information Technology / / / \ : PO Box 261, Warrawong, NSW 2502, AUSTRALIA / / / /\ \ : A.C.N. 006 476 218 \ \/ / / / : Phone +61-42-757522 ext 6998 \ / / / : Fax +61-42-757908 \/\/\/ : E-mail GRAHAM.G.R.DOMBKINS@ : BHPMELMSM.BHP.bhpmel04.telememo.au : AppleLink GRAHAM.G.R.DOMBKINS@=D002183@INTERNET# : AppleLink AUST0387 : X.400 : P=BHPMEL04 A=TELEMEMO C=AU ======================================================================== "Hello Earth!! Um, no, Elton John is actuall gay, not bisexual in the strict sense. Over the last year or so (not sure when he first started talking about the whole thing) he's been very clear that he's _gay_ and that he was clinging to bisexuality as some sort of redemption and/or proof that it was only a phase. He says that his marriage back in the mid-80s was a sham and that it was incredibly unfair to his wife; to some extent he was using her. I've heard quite a few interviews lately in which he does refer to himself as gay (including his wonderful interview with Whoopi). >It is my impression that the nascent bi ideology holds it to be a distinctive >orientation unto itself, and to imply otherwise is unlikely to win you many >E-hugs from the good folks over at soc.bi.
