I'm so envious of woj (woj, I envy you!) for getting to hear the new one. My favorite Caterwaul CD is _The Nature of Things_ unless I'm listening to _Pin and Web_, which then becomes my favorite. :-) I've never been able to accurately describe Caterwaul's sound. Echoey guitars, deep bass, percussive alternative rock (er, rick) with the most unusual female vocals in the universe. (This side of Victoria Williams, that is. Who, btw, is not me--someone actually asked me awhile back!--the name on my birth certificate is Vickie, not Victoria, and Chris and I aren't married, though one of these days I might pull a Michelle Marvin and change my name to Williams, but that's neither here nor there, as Mitch might say.) > Any Caterwaul discographies/info floating around? Me too! Did you know it's about her cats? Barney Parker specifically. Barney was watching Happy play with a gift she'd gotten from a woman who hardly knew Happy. It was, well, one of those sticks of glass with glitter and foil(?) cutouts of stars and things (much like Cosmic Vagabond's .sig line). Happy was watching Barney watching Happy play with this thing in the light, and the song came to her. Happy thanks her cats on the new album. "Icky Bone Swanson" is a new one. Kevin was waiting for his car to be fixed when some guy drove up and when they opened his hood, a kitty was in there! It had crawled up there to stay warm and then couldn't get out before the car was started and in motion. Poor thing! It had a wild ride! The guys at the shop had called the animal shelter to come pick it up when Kevin became aware of the situation. He called the shelter to tell them to not come, and took the kitten home with him. > What other Happy cd's should I buy given my likes above... Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 8 Feb 93 00:58:55 EST From: jessica@maurolycus.rutgers.edu (jessica) Subject: mmmmmmmmmm, yes to quote my favorite artist of all time in reaction to the latest from my second favorite artist of all time. mmmmmmm, yes. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm YES!!!!!!!!!!! The former is Kate, who is important to me in so many ways that noone else comes close. the latter is Happy, who *would* be my favorite artist of all time if it weren't for Kate. (Amusing for me, that Kate is one of _Happy_'s favorite artists). Well, I didn't pre-order Equipoise - partially because I never had enough money in one spot (that spot being my checking account) to send off a check - also becuase I knew it woudl be available right here in my local record store.. (amazing in itself). But my local record store wasn't going to have it 'til this coming tuesday!!!!! I've been going crazy since last tuesday when they didn't have it :( So, this weekend Joe and I were driving out to Pennsylvania for his friend Dave's 40th birthday party. It's about 2 hours west of here, so we were going to be staying over night. Now, on the way to the party, we had to drive near Philadelphia, in particular the town Bryn Mawr was not going to be *totally* out of the way, and I knew that 21st Century Sound there would have copies!! Why I didn't tihnk of this *days* before we left, I don't know. Well, saturday comes, and it has been snowing hard all morning and is still snowing. We set out to PA. Traffic is slow, and we see many accidents. Because of the snow, we have left a bit early. We get about 30 minutes from the house, and I'm looking at the map to plan our route, when it hits me just how close we are going to Bryn Mawr, and what i know must be there in that little town... So, although it was snowing, and assuming I actually did know how to get there, we had *just* enough time to make the stop and still get to the party relatively on time, somehow I convince Joe to stop in Bryn Mawr. I didn't tell him just how chancy it was that I could find it. The time I'd gone to Bryn Mawr for the record signing, I had gotten there a very strange way - if we were to make it this time, I would have to go the "right" way, the first time. Somehow, I made exactly the right choices and we found both Bryn Mawr and the store on the first try. We were coming from the direction opposite the one i'd come from for the record signing, so there was nothing for me to recognize - I was either right or very wrong. Turned out I was right. :) My sense of direction is usually pretty good :) aaaanyway, we found the store, and they had the cd of course!! i've listened to it a few times now - right now, I am listening to it on headphones for the first time.. it is sooooooooooooooo incredible.. :) I suppose it's a little silly, but at moments it is so good I could almost cry, just from being happy to hear it. yum. yum, and WOW! Let's see, I'll start at the beginning. First, at the record store. Lenny had it playing in the store of course, and displayed onthe counter as the "pick of the week". As the pick of the week, this means that a quote from the album appears on *every* receipt. !! So my receipt says: 21ST CENTURY SOUND 02/06 14:00:37 EQUIPOISE RHODES, HAPPY 1@ 12.99 [etc..] **"i don't think i can speak for anyone i don't think i can fight for anyone but i have to know where i stand as a person, not a woman or a man."** It's very cool. I will save this :) On the box was a sticker: ------------------------------------------------- | THE BOOKLET WITH THIS CD IS: | | | | A. Perfectly Gorgeous | | B. A Botched Print Job | | C. A Collector's Item | | | | If you answered "B" and would like a new | | one: Send us a stamped, self-addressed | | 6"x9" manilla envelope. | | | | WE WANT YOU TO HAVE THE BEST! | | Aural Graticifaction | ------------------------------------------------- ?? It seems ok to me. Did anyone get a botched print job, and if so, in what way is there something wrong?? the cover is pretty neat :) to me, representing duality - not jsut of happy herself - but several of the songs, most notably "he will come/the flight" are about people/creatures with a duality to them - both beauty and darkness. Hmm, you know, the *very* beginning of "cohabitants" sounds like cookie monster speaking in german. Ok, now, there I am in the car, and "Runners" starts, and i haven't yet had achance to look at the lyrics.. at first it sounded kinda silly (eep, yup, I said that). It definitely said "he's gonna steal my heartbeat" which sounded a *tad* too poppish, i was confused. then I read the lyrics and I was quite impressed (and felt silly for having though any less of happy). then came "he will come/the flight" which on first listen only made me want to hear the albany tapes. I felt they weren't quite as good as they'd been live. We only got as far as the beginning of "cohabitants" (and waht a beginning!!) before we reached our destination. I was going nuts for hours before i had a chance to get outside to the car and hear the rest of that song!!! wow!! I REALLY love this one. loved it right away from the first second, it is *so* cool and weird and neat and beautiful and scary!!! then I had to go back in.. so i didn't hear the rest of the album 'til the next morning in the car again on the way home. Now, the acura is a lovely car, and joe's got a nice cd player in it, but i've never been in an integra that i've liked for listening to cds. There must be something wrong with the shape. Anyway, on this listen "out like a lamb" and "closer" made more of an impression than on the first listen, and i started to get used to "he will come/the flight", but the second half of the album still didn't quite strike me (i was tired, forgive me!). Well, I will spare you from all of the details of the rest of today :) but suffice it to say that after two mroe listens, i am totally addicted to this album. I'd at first thought there was *no* way I would ever like this album as much as warpaint. There is nothing on this album that is like "feed the fire", "phobos", or "wrong century", for me. But by the afternoon I was convinced that this was not a flaw. this album is as amazing, in totally new ways. I albsolutely love "out like a lamb", "closer", "cohabitants", "he will come/the flight" (which, now that i've heard them better I liek at least as much as the live versions - there is some *cool* stuff going on in them!!!! it's also nice to have all the lyrics now :) and "runners", "i say" hmm, silly to end up lsiting them all. lets see.. I don't have a precise order of favorites, however, i can group them and put the groups in order. 1) out like a lamb, closer, cohabitants, runners 2) he will come, the flight, temporary and eternal 3) i say 4) save our souls, play the game, mother sea "save our souls" i originally had a problem with. It reminded me of "reaching out"! Urf. I don't hate reaching out - there are a lot of things about it that I like, but there are a few things about it that I do not like, and "save our souls" seemed to have the same things. However upon further listenings i find it doesn't really have the "reaching out" problem - the *music* in it alone carries it, and the words and sound of the vocals overal saves it from 'reaching out doom' for me :) :) :) (note the smilies - please, no flames about kate's song, not here anyway :) ). the point is, at first "save our souls" kind of bothered me.. in particular when te voices go "save our souls... " but it grew on me and I really like it as a song. "closer" I tihnk is incredible. kelly's vocals on it are *perfect*. They are really the only vocals on the album that are that strongly emotionally expressive - *not* that happy's aren't emotionally expressive, and not that the songs do not achieve the same power of emotion - but it seems to me that on this album, happy usually uses the entire song to achieve an effect. I tihnk on Warpaint, and certainly before, that happy would use her voice itself a bit more passionately. it's one of the things that was a first very strikingly missing from this album. there is certianly a *lot* of expression in happy's voice (I still can not get over what an incredible, absolutely *INCREDIBLE* voice she has got.) but on this album it sems to be mostly quieter, and you've got listen carefully to all of the nuances. (_not_ like i mind.) "the flight" is lovely.. mmm. (it just came on again). let's see, i'l comment on mother sea too - at first, i almost hated this - i wanted to hear the live version :( but of course, this too has grown on me. I don't tinhk i love it yet - there are aspects i love - the vocals are haunting. but overal something is wrong for me.. I will work on what it is.. "play the game" ha awesome lyrics, and is a great song, but it is not one of my favorites only becuase i love others more.. :) I tinhk i will wait some before commenting on the others, or any more on what i've already said :) My overall reaction: AWESOME AMAZING *BRILLIANT* STUNNING LOVELY and just a joy to continue listening to. jessica ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: Cats under the bonnet ...
