On a related note, years ago (in my punk phase) I had a hard core punk cover of the Partridge Family's song "I think I Love You" Needless to say it was quite different from the original! Sam: Sorry that in my last post I called you Jim. I'm filled with shame. :-( There's someone in my office called Jim Warren...and a dendrite in my brain misfired! I'll go stand in the corner without my supper now! ;-) Special K: says "Norfolk (where they actually have some culture)" Scary thought! I was born and raised in Norfolk, VA (my first 17 years of life). Other than Ghent (NARO cinema, Popouri restaurant, some good ice cream places and antique stores) and maybe Wards Corner (Tracks Records and a good used bookstore), I never thought of Norfolk as having culture! Of course, I guess compared to some of the other places around there it might ;-) Of course, the places I mentioned may all be gone now, because it has been years since I was last there! Anthony: says "Once, an even longer time ago, I owned ALL of The Wombles records. There. I bet no one can beat that!" Forgive your humble servant's ignorance but who are the Wombles? Of course, maybe I really don't want to know, it might scare me. ;-) I'll getting more and more into WARPAINT. I keep playing the tape over and over and have the songs going through my head. I even woke up this morning with some of the songs from it running through my head! I can't wait to get the other albums! I feel just like a kid! - Michael B. I might as well add my own sad story to the role-call of shame. I at one time owned, and listened to, the record "Kites are Fun" by (sigh) The Free Design. I didn't buy it, but I owned it, and I listened. If only I could protest that my ears didn't inhale! I also own, still own, Bob Ayala's "Journey" and Daniel Amos's "Alarma!." Both were pledge premiums, gifts from the college radio station WFMU for calling in to say I'd give. I got two records because I was so generous. Unfortunately, my pledge was listed as arriving during the Christian rock show David and Goliath rather than during Sunny Oches's folk show. I haven't listened to either. In my own defense, I also own, and listen to, Dick Hyman's "MOOG" album, one of the early synthesizer records. It includes "The Minotaur" "The Legend of Johnny Pot" and "Tap Dance in the Memory Banks." A local music columnist wrote the following this weekend, in suggesting the best shows to see locally. "Joan Osborne, the performer I named as my number-one-favorite act of 1992 returns to the Metro in Saratoga Springs Saturday night. (extensive blah, blah, blah)... Her open and articulate expression of sensual passion rivals the idiosyncratic style of Tori Amos. Unlike Amos', Osborne's passionate obsessions are healthy and often joyous (more blah, blah, blah) So has anybody heard her? Her first album was "Soul Show." He hints that she began as a blues artist. Comments? Reviews? alanm The future comes vividly alive in the grooves of this record because Dick Hyman, Command Records and the Moog synthesizer play it not like it is, but like it *will* be. ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 4 Feb 93 2:36:44 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Today's your birthday friend... Having had to leave the house for the day prior to her going on, I didn't get to see it--would Happy have termed this phenomenon "I'm not asleep, I'm just not home?" :-) Did anyone else on this mailing list see it? Somehow, I think it would have been interesting to see how Regis reacted, if kd tried out the same reminisc- ences of her roller derby ambitions--bon mots and all--on him that she laid on Leno Friday. Steve Fagg's discourse on Shaffer's _Equus_ reminded me of the time in 1978 when I rented a Ford Pinto which had a variety of operational problems (which were actually somewhat endemic to the model, so I wasn't necessarily stuck with a lemon). At that time, Ford was heavily into model names such as Pinto, Maverick, Mustang, and similar horsepucky :-). The thought crossed my mind that if Ford cared anything about truth in labeling, it would not have called the hapless Pinto model I was beset with by that name, but instead would have dubbed it the Equus, in recognition of the near-irresistible impulse it often inspired in the owner (or renter, in the instant case) to punch its lights out :-). But then one day > in the mid-seventies I discovered Eno's album Here Come the Warm Jets, and > well I've never been the same after that. Heh! What's wrong with having ELO albums? I've still got several of them (indeed I have several on CD). I must admit that they (and some Chris de Burgh discs) are easily the most mainstream things in my 500+ CD collection, but just occasionally it's nice to wallow in something which isn't musically or lyrically challenging. I happen to love the ELO sound and Jeff Lynne's melody/harmony lines. I've never understood why I love almost everything Jeff has written but there are lots of mainstream artists I cannot stand to listen to at all (Billy Joel is a particular problem). Go figure... Did you seen any dates for Norway, or even Sweden or Denmark? Marie Fredriksson, "Den staendiga resan", EMI Svenska, 1992 [...] "always travelling" [...] I would translate it into "The constant voyage" [*], but I guess the only change of meaning is change of focus. While we're on the subject of Swedish female vocalists, I'd like to recommend Eva Dahlgren, "En blekt blondins hjaerta" (The heart of a bleached blonde). I love her lyrics, but I guess that's of little value to you. I love her percussions, but I'm a sucker for a beat. There are naked ballads and up-tempo dance music. It's good, intelligent pop. If you see it (about as likely as I will ever see a "Love Spirals Downward" album :-/), give it a listen. Kjetil T. Hi, all, Okay, I'M behind on the digests, as well, but just had to share a guilty secret with y'all. When I was thirteen, I owned about 5 or 6 albums by....KISS. The story has a pleasant resolution....I eventually (sooner, rather than later) outgrew this phase of (retro)development, at the same time as a friend of mine was just getting into them. I gave him all my albums...on the condition that he NEVER play them while I was visiting....:) Aside from the usual childhood collections of Partridge Family and even one Brady Bunch album (which, at the time, I used to listen to VERY frequently) I believe my past is clear enough for me to secure a seat on the supreme court....though I'll continue to scour my memory banks for more embarrassments. There, I feel SO much better.:) Chris Sampson "Me and you and a dog named Boo......." ======================================================================== Date: 04 Feb 1993 10:33:24 -0500 (EST) From: SANDOVAL@stsci.edu Subject: Pintos... Mitch, I actually OWNED a Pinto. (Well, I inherited it from my great-great grandmother.) Can that count for my Hall of Shame??? :) Actually, there is a great story about the Pinto. Well, great AFTER the fact. I was driving home from college. I was on the freeway in San Diego and I was getting ready to take the exit. The Pinto was a 4-speed, with the gearshift on the floor. Well, I reached for the gearshift, and got air. I reached again and still nothing. I looked to see where it was and I saw it lying on the floor and I could see the freeway through the hole where it USED to be! I would've loved to have seen my face, since I imagine it was like in the cartoons. (Eyes bugging out, hair standing up, etc...) I managed to exit the freeway and stop the car without hitting anything. It was terrifying then, but it's funny now... :) John ======================================================================== From: Martin Dougiamas Subject: Apologies...
