Dave mentions a Les Mystere des Voix Bulgares perfarmance, then indicated "your mileage may vary". Just curious Dave, have you ever seen them in concert? I saw them last June in the Lukaskirche in Munich (=amazing acoustics), and it was definitely a transcendental experience. The entire chorus doesn't sing all the time- in fact, I think there was a soloist for every song except two or three. They have three guys with them who play traditional instruments and accompany them in a few songs, and they even got to do their own instrumental set as a chance to give the singers a break. Then a lot of songs are sung by one, two , or three of the women. It is impossible to desribe the feeling I had hearing them in person. You don't so much hear as experience the power of their voices- their singing technique, tonal arrangements, and that sort of thing. To make them into background music would be a crime- they belong on center stage (or altar, as the case may be :). Just my two cents- if you are regularly affected by the power of the female voice like I am, my all means go see them live. And buy all their albums and listen to them often. *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 27 Feb 92 17:56:04 -0500 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: Re: Stuff Meredith reveals another clue about THAT WHICH CANNOT BE REVEALED: > Today I was presented with an album by P.D.Q. The ability of the octree encoding technique to index spatial data as blocks of variable levels of resolution enhances the manipulative properties of a geological database and reduces computational overheads. In addition, variable-sized blocks are better suited than most existing methods to the representation of complex geological structures. This report outlines the fundamentals of octree encoding and the usage of linear octrees with geological data. A new extension to linear octrees - the multilinear octree - is also described. These algorithms, together with a collection of efficient linear-time algorithms for manipulating and displaying linear octrees, are combined into a basic solid-modelling package, called the Minsoft Octree Modeller (MOM). * This system performs efficient analysis and manipulation of highly complex solids in real-time, especially if implemented using parallel processors." * I used to tell people I was busy at home working on my Mom. :-) The only bummer about finishing this is that effective immediately I have to start on my Honours dissertation. First, congratulation to Martin, Kiri and Meredith for efforts well done! I'm very happy for you all!! Anyone who has a chance to see the Bulgarian chorus should definitely go. They are a modern wonder, based in ancient times. When we lived in Kansas City, we flew up here to Chicago just to see the Bulgarians and it was worth the trip. If you only have to drive across town, consider yourself very priviledged. We saw them once again after we moved up here, and it was just as awesome an experience. I spent most of the concert with tears in my eyes, they are that powerful! I was a tiny bit disappointed both times that none of the Trio Bulgarka were with them, but it was only a momentary twinge. The rest of the Chorus are truly magnificent without them, as opposed to extraordinarily magnificent, as they must be with them. Go, really, just go. Angelos, I *loved* your Ecto Jingle! I fully plan to sing it to Happy the next time I call her :-). I went to the Post Office yesterday and picked up packages from Ken Descoteaux and Terry Partis. Terry, it was the single tape for the Ecto SiG, so the double for the HGP is still missing :-(. I'll get those dubbed and back out to you guys RSN. I did mail packages to Beth (hi!) and Bob Brown (I use the term "promotion and devotion" a lot now...thanks for it!) and David Blank-Edelman (sorry it took so long) and Bob Krovetz. He's never been an Ectophile but really wanted a copy. Steve Fagg got his 2 copies because one was supposed to go to Bob. Ah well, minor glitch. John Wheeler now has a copy and Bob's is on its way. Mike Mendelson, I did mail your Ecto SiG along with that first batch. I'm shocked that the tapes made it to Germany within 4 days, but a Chicago(Evanston)-bound tape never made it at all. :-( Bummer. I'll make you another one and call you when it's done. They told me at the PO that a package had been returned. They couldn't tell me who or where it was from, or even why it was sent back. If someone sent something and it gets returned to you, know that we haven't moved and that it was just a Post Office glitch. Re-send it. Sorry and thanks! Karl, I hope you and Klaus have gotten in contact by now. Terry and John, thanks *so* much for the anagrams of FU_BLU_MA_LI! I liked them all quite a bit. My favorites are the ones with "lulu" in them. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I used to be a big fan of Lulu's. Or because one of my (many) favorite Camper Van Beethoven songs is "Lulu Land"....hmmm, that's probably closer to the truth, since I'm *still* a big fan of CVB. Damn, I just remembered that they broke up, what a shame. I've been playing lots of things on my radio shows that are inspired by Ectophiles. I've played Tori Amos, Eleftheria, Betty, Gyan, Kathryn Tickell (sent by Jeff Burka!), Noirin Ni Riain and lots of other things I've been reading about in Ecto. You people are wonderful sources, thanks! I promise I will get something sent to Doug soon, I've been wondering how to do the SiG-of-the-Month thing. I just can't decide what to do. I can send 2 complete Chicago or recent Kansas City shows on a 120, or one old 2-hour Kansas City show. Most people hate 120s though, so I could put 2 partial Chicago shows on a 100 minute tape. If I cut out my talking, intro and outro, they would fit. I'm not worried about losing my talking, after all, the music is the most important thing. Or I could make "new" shows, just specifically for Ectophiles. I like that idea, because then I could play more things I'd really like you all to hear. That's what I'm leaning towards doing, I just have to go ahead and do it. I have a tape ready to be sent to Doug, containing the following: 1 90-minute tape Side A The trio of live (in the studio) songs recorded for World Cafe... Feed the Fire Given In Words Weren't Made For Cowards The World Cafe interview *with* the songs included. (So yes, the songs appear twice on the tape, but they are so good I don't think anyone will mind. The "alone" versions at the beginning of the tape include studio coughs and throat-clearings that were cut out of the WXPN versions.) Since I still had room at the end of the tape, I put on "When the Rain Came Down" just for the heck of it. I didn't have anything else Happy- related to put on and I hated to leave just a long blank space. As it is, there's probably enough room for another song, but I don't know what to put there. Side B This was a toughie. All along I had intended to put my "Happy/Suspended In Gaffa History" dub on this side. (Rather than go into a long explanation, anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about should read Digest 134. I tell all about it and how it was scrapped from the Ecto SiG tape.) Of course, once it came time to actually *dub* the thing onto this b-side, I was indecisive and procrastinative. First I was going to put the 7-minute version, the one that wouldn't pare itself down to fit over "For We Believe" and then I decided to use the 17 minute version. Then I changed my mind and put the 22 minute version. Finally I decided to just put the "Semi-Final" version (which is about 30 minutes) in hopes that maybe someone will have some good suggestions about how to edit it in a good way. I found that my editing skills will never win me fame and fortune, and that I hate doing it anyway. (I once thought I'd like to be a film editor..HA!) So, anyone hearing this thing, do not mistake it for a final version that I'm really proud of, it's not and I'm not, but perhaps will entertain a bit. Even though it's unfinished and out-of-order, I find it fun to listen to, but then, I was there and I can nostalge on the fun I had at the time. It ends with bits from my 6-hour marathon. A while into the show I played "Friend You'll Be" and dedicate to all my listeners who were there at the studio my last "live" night before moving to Chicago, plus all the ones who had phoned during the show to wish me well. In the last hour of the show I played nothing but Happy. It wasn't planned, I only intended on playing a few songs but just couldn't stop myself and before I knew it, over an hour had passed. I say my final goodbyes slumped over the console, I was *VERY* tired and *VERY* depressed about leaving. So, this HTR/SiG history thing ends with those final good byes. I let "To Be E. Mortal" finish playing, the same way I did that night. After that's over, to avoid blank space I put on some longer bits that appeared within the 30 minute piece. They're redundant, but you can hear some of the bits in context. I just let them play until the tape ran out. Anyway, the point of all this is that I'll be sending tapes to Doug within the next week, and you can start sending him tapes once he receives them. He'll post about what he has and what procedure he wants to implement for dubs. Keep an eye out for it if you're interested in these tapes. My friend Sue sent me the Cowboy Junkies album. It's more "upbeat" than their first, but the basic sound (vocals and guitars) are the same. I've only listened to it once so far, but I like it. My favorite is still their debut album, I think it always will be. It totally mesmerized me when I first heard it and still does. I borrowed the Sugarcubes album from WZRD, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I have heard "Hit" (they played that video on MTV) and except for Einer's solo rap in the middle, like it a lot. But I'm real biased. Though I think the band is very uneven, the songs I like I *really* *really* like, love actually, and I've met Bjork, who's a real sweetie, so I can't be very objective about the 'cubes. I hope I find some real gems on this album. I want to be blown away like I was when I heard "F**king in Rhythm & Sorrow" or "Birthday" or "Planet" or a few others. More thoughts about Tori: It's strange about Tori Amos. Depending on the mood I'm in at the time I listen to her, I'm either irratated beyond belief or think she's pretty good. Her voice is common, I've heard many other women who sound just like her, the most recent being Gyan. Martin, you'll fall over when you hear Tori...their voices have so many similarities. Gyan's is *much* more powerful, "brighter" and not nearly as "affected" so they aren't identical. By affected, I mean Tori's habit of mini-moans...drives me crazy if I'm in a "Tori's irratating" mood. Hmmm, though I like some Gyan songs better than anything on Tori's album, I think she's more uneven than Tori. If I'm in a "Tori's ok" mood, there aren't any songs on Little Earthquakes that I'd skip over, there are some on Gyan's (sorry Martin, "Don't Underestimate Me" has me climbing the walls until I can get to cassette player to fast forward it) so I salute Tori for being consistant. I'm listening to Tori right now, for the 20th time, at least. I haven't changed my opinion much. The songs I really liked the first time I heard the album ("Precious Things" and "Little Earthquakes") are the same ones I really like now, and the rest are ok/good. I would say there's not a "bad" song on the album. Each song has something about it that makes it interesting, either the instrumentation or the lyrics. There are no rock/girl cliches anywhere on the album, for that I salute her. When I'm in a "Tori's ok" mood, one thing I think is that she is trying very hard to be different and interesting, more power to her. When I'm in a "Tori's irratating" mood, one thing I think is that she is trying very hard to be different and interesting, too bad it doesn't come naturally. Still and all, she's more interesting than a whole slew of pop tarts on the market, and I wish her luck in whatever it is she's trying to do. Thinking about female singers who sound alike, the most startling example (besides Happy's high voice and Kate's) is Heidi Berry sounding *exactly* like the singer (?Julianna?) from All About Eve. I would *swear* they are the same person! With that example, Tori and Gyan don't sound anything like each other. Though I think there are more "types" of female voices than male vocals, the range is still limited. Truly distinctive voices are rare, unfortunately. Victoria Williams and Betsy Martin (of Caterwaul) have the most distinctive voices I've ever heard. They are two women who will never have to worry about someone coming along and sounding like them. (Unfortunately, they will also never be famous, because their voices are just too weird for the "masses") I saw Sarah McLachlan's video on MTV too. It's only the 2nd Sarah video I've ever seen. I liked it a lot. It will be nice when she comes out with a video compilation. btw, thanks to Hilary Sachs for mentioning Happy within a Sarah McLachlan post on rec.music.folk! That was a very nice suprise. If anyone sees anything else about Happy on any of the newsgroups, be sure to save it for me, please. My net access is going to be non-existant for awhile. I most likely won't even be able to read or answer e-mail. If I get some really good Happy news I'll pass it along through someone else. I'm now sure I won't be going to Philly either, so I expect those who do go to take *lots* of photographs (of Happy and of each other) and scan them in as gifs, if at all possible. Anyone willing to send me prints (and a tape of the concert) will be forever in my graces :-). If I'm back on by the day of Klaus's party, I'll definitely be on the Kate-Server. We can have an Ecto party in Chicago that day too. It will have to start early, to coordinate with the Germany party. I'll keep the Chicagoians informed. Anyone who might be passing through Chicago the 28th is more than welcome to give us a call (312/508-5283) and join us. I'll have another one on (or near, have to look at a calender) Happy's birthday. Kiri will be able to join us for that one! There's always more to say, but my mind is a blank at the moment. I'll be back with you as soon as I can. If anything really major comes up, and if anyone feels like giving me a call about it, our phone will be working, so feel free to give a call. I think Salsa is Cuban but I could be mistaken. >He showed this wonderful movie on Salsa with Tito Puente, >Cecilia Cruz (an absolutely brilliant woman), and a few other artists. >It was a really interesting flick, and I was really impressed with >Celia (not cecilia like above i goofed) Cruz. I was wondering >if anyone was more familiar with her. This summer, when I was in Greece, my friend Efi dragged me to a Puentes/Cruz concert at the Lycabettus theater in Athens (where Gabriel PoV was filmed). For the first 5 minutes we were sitting in our seats. Then we looked at each other, ran to the bar, got a rum and coke which we quickly gobbled and spent the rest of the 2.5 hours of the concert at the front row, dancing like crazy and requesting songs for Quito, Ecuador! Celia has such a stage presence and is SO cool! We asked for the songs, and she sang 'Que Lindo Quito', of course we flipped totally. (BTW we didn't know of any songs about Ecuador, but it was request night there and we took our chance). And then after another roung of drinks we complimented her for her shoes (some kind of heelless platforms...) and she showed them to the crowd! It was SO amazing. Celia is the latin Tina Turner, AND the queen of salsa. (I won't go into my Tina Turner concert story...:-)) That's all for now. Date: Fri, 28 Feb 92 16:56:07 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu kIrI sez: >(I have >this unexplanable hatred of Sinead which stems from an _extremely_ >disappointing concert she gave 2 years ago). A month or so ago I put together a sampler tape for a good friend of mine back at school, of almost all female artists (the only man was Wim Mertens (thanks again, Justin!)) I thought he might enjoy. I also included a bit of 'rarity' type stuff by artists I knew he was into, but which I figured he wouldn't have a copy of. One of those bits was Sinead's "Silent Night" single from a couple of months ago. When Chris finally got around to giving me some impressions on some of the artists last week, he wrote: >>And also Sinead is starting to bore me these days no matter what she is >>singing...that bad concert I payed 25 dollars to see really spoiled my >>Sinead attraction. It was pretty funny seeing KiRi's echo of this just a few days later. I have to wonder whether a bad concert could totally turn me off to an artist I adore so much. _I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got_ has some mediocre moments, but I still think _The Lion and the Cobra_ is beyond superb (says he who just started listening to it again after a hiatus of a few months; I have a tape I recorded back in early '89 that has TLatC on one side and _Enya_ on the other. Ahhhhh) On a mildly related note, I appreciated KirI's list of favorites on _Solace_. The only one she left out is what may be the best song on the album-- "Mercy".
