Uh, woj, what was it that you said about cars? ;) Oh yes, delirium is a wonderfully vague state. To quote a pin a mutual acquaintance of us all is currently wearing somewhere on his person, "Sleep deprivation is fun. You see such pretty colors." Well, I was born in the fall, and I know I was an accident. Not unwanted at all, just, well, rather unexpected. My siblings are 16 and 14 years older than me, so you can see what I mean. :) As for my emotional state, I plead the Fifth (but ask me about my complexes sometime!). Mitch- are you a tennis fan, by any chance? I love the sport but can't play it for beans- I'm happy just to watch. My favorite player is Gabriela Sabatini, which made for an interesting time when I was watching her play Steffi Graf in the Wimbledon final last summer in a room full of Germans in Munich. :) Ack!!! The Blue Men show isn't on any more??? I know three people who have seen it and I wanted to go SO BAD but I missed it! @#$*& Vickie, I should think your worries about getting arrested while hitching would end where those about getting killed by some sicko along the way would begin. And this is only an inkling at the moment, I'll know more tomorrow at this time (I hope), but there is a *very* strong possibility Happy may play at Wesleyan. There's a student group on campus with money to bring cool music to the campus after spring break, and a friend of mine is chairing the committee and asked for suggestions. :) Money and venue size are the operative words, and as I said I won't know anything until I talk to the folks in Albany tomorrow (I hope I'm able to reach them), but there is a chance. I've been agonizing for two months now how to get sponsorship to get her here, and this evening it all fell into my lap. I hope it works out...you heard it here first! *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== From: katefans@chinet.chi.il.us (Chris n Vickie) Subject: Re: Delirium? I know three people who have > seen it and I wanted to go SO BAD but I missed it! @#$*& I was somewhat tired and came off sounding pissy about Blue Man Group and Tori Amos last night, I don't think as badly about them as it may have sounded. Blue Man Group sounds like fun, I can see where the parody comes in. Actually, I'm sorry i missed them too, though I wouldn't have wanted to be in the front rows :-) The reviewer killed me though, she seemed to take them *soooooo* seriously! > Vickie, I should think your worries about getting arrested while hitching > would end where those about getting killed by some sicko along the way > would begin. I know this is a legitimate concern and I know it sounded as if I hadn't even thought of it. Believe me, I've always been *very* careful whenever I did hitchhike. I've turned down lots of rides if I didn't feel right about the person. There are lots of safety "rules" to hitchhiking that I always followed. The same goes for picking up hitchhikers, which I used to do occasionally. I've had some great experiences out on the road, in both positions. As a hitchhiker, I even got a truck driving job once! I was on my way backto Kansas City from North Carolina and got picked up by a truck driver who had just lost his co-driver. I was working for a car transport company, but had gone to truck driving school and had had a temp job driving a truck (dream job that, hauling Kansas beef from Hutchinson, KS to Portland, OR & Seattle, WA, bringing WA apples & onions back to KS. Weekly run, $500.00 a week! It was temp because the owner of the truck was waiting for his brother to get out of the army and join him in the business :-( ) and anyway, once my history came out, he offered me a job. Instead of going to Kansas City, we went to Iowa where the Trucking company was headquartered. I took the DOT written test, the driving test, and was on my way to Los Angeles 72 hours after I was picked up. Wow. The most interesting hitchhiker I ever picked up was a fellow from Germany who was vacationing here and I even took him home with me (I lived with my parents, they were home...no raised eyebrows now) and took him back out to the highway the next morning. He and my dad got along Great! He was very nice and we all liked him a lot. I have always been proud that I made a section of his stay in America a bit nice. Another fellow I picked up gave me information (names, addresses, phone numbers, the works) of companies looking to hire female (equal oportunity mania was in full force) truck drivers (logging trucks) in Alaska. I almost went...I was (-) this close, but I chickened out. One time I was on my way back to KC from Cincinnati where I'd just seen Genesis (the Duke tour) and got picked up by a fellow in a car (that's "four-wheeler" in See-Bee talk) and he happened to have a CB. We were on a stretch of highway that joined I-70 and I-55 and I saw a truck go by that was from the same company my brother worked for (yep, he was a truck driver) and I got on the CB to ask if the driver knew "Leprechaun" (my brother's "handle") and guess what! It *was* my brother. That's the most highly implausable thing that's ever happened to me! He stopped, we stopped, I ran across the highway and thumbed a ride to where my bro was waiting, and I went with him to Battle Creek, MI. Just being with him made me think that trucking was a pretty cool thing. Because of my, um..side trip...I, um...got fired from my job in a hotel. Fine! It was a perfect opportunity. That's when I went to truck driving school and got the Dream job right after graduation. Trucking was great for a while, I *loved* driving the trucks! I *loved* the traveling, and I *really* loved the money, but it's not an easy life and lots of circumstances pretty much soured me on the concept. I ended up going back to work at the Driveaway company and drove cars for 5 years. Those jobs, plus my parent's vacation mania, are responsible for me having visited all of the lower 48 states. That's cool. Anyway, got off into a tangent there, but basically I understand about hitchhiking and hitchhikers. It's been a long time though, and things have no doubt changed quite a bit. I am more paranoid now. But if I *did* hitchhike, be assured I'm not a green newbie out there on the road. The first thing I'd do would be to get to a major truck stop. If you've been a trucker (and it's still close, because my brother is still a trucker, though at heart and talent-wise he should be a computer artist) the first people to check with to get rides are truckers. When I still was a trucker, I took a mini-vacation and hitched from New Jersey to Chicago to see the Genesis Abacab concert, then hitched with another trucker back to New Jersey and caught up with my boss at a truck stop on the PA/Jersey border. So that would be my strategy again, to get rides with truckers all the way. CBs come in handy and they can "relay" you to your destination. I imagine that more trucking companies have stricter rules about hitchers now than they used to. That's the biggest problem I'd imagine. Anyway, it's just a thought in passing, because I don't want to miss this for *anything*! I should have explained more, instead of just tossing the comment off. Ah, the stories I could tell....(a mini one-my dream job took me to Washington state shortly after Mt. St. Helens blue, er..blew, and the rivers were still blocked with all the muck that had come from Spirit Lake. Quite a sight. My first run, on the way back, in central Wash, we stopped by the side of the road and scooped up a lot of ash from the side of the road. I still have the ash in a wine bottle, right under a Kate poster and beside the box set.) btw, Genesis fan that I was, my handle as a trucker was "Foxtrot" > And this is only an inkling at the moment, I'll know more tomorrow at this > time (I hope), but there is a *very* strong possibility Happy may play at > Wesleyan. GREAT!Oh, that's wonderful, good luck! Keep us posted, of course. :-( poor Midori Ito. :-( poor Tonya Harding (she's a favorite of mine) :-) Kristi was *gorgous* :-) hooray for Nancy Kerrigan! Friday night....long program....it's not teeth-grinding anymore, with Midori out of gold range, but it will still be great! I've decided that I'm an unrepentant Alberto Tomba fan. (Ok, well, maybe just a little embarrassed) It's his *skiing* that I admire! Really! He's such a brilliant skier and I really do like his attitude. I guess that's why Chris Bowman is one of my favorites too. I *really* hope those guys believe in condoms, I'd hate for them to become the Magic Johnson of skating and skiing. I better go to bed, see ya. Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 20 Feb 92 11:45:55 EST From: tempest!john@sunne.east.sun.com (John M. Wheeler) Subject: Ecto SIG and other music Let me first say thanks! to Steve Fagg for immediately getting me the Ecto SIG tape. I'm so glad I won the contest, as I've been sitting on my butt with parking tickets, bills, and desires of hearing Happy for the first time piling up in my brain mass. The fuzzy blue package I received last night really brightened my day! I've heard the tape only 1 1/4 times, so I can't comment too much on Happy's music except to say that I really like the early, Bachy stuff, and that I'm an instant convert! As I told Vickie in e-mail, I've recently taken the advice of Ectophiles and Love-hounds alike and purchased: _Little Earthquakes_, Tori Amos _Solace_, Sarah McLachlan _Like Stars in my Hands_, Single Gun Theory _Until the End of the World_, soundtrack _Under Towers_, Arson Garden _Smells Like Truth_, Laurie Freelove I love them all. Despite Vickie's warning, I very much recommend _Little Earthquakes_, and the album can be compared to _The Kick Inside_. Great potential! Sarah McLachlan has turned to some Sinead O'Conneresque lilts in _Solace_, which has an awesome track (with commercial potential) in "Into the Fire" ("...feed the fire..."). The Single Gun Theory album has seamless Indian music samples (including Najma (yes, Vickie)) and Liz Fraser-like vocal processing to generate a most pleasing sound. The soundtrack to _Until the End of the World_ (which is an excellent movie, go see it) is quite good, especially tracks by the Talking Heads, Jane Siberry with k.d. lang, and U2. The Arson Garden CD is much grungier than the above stuff, and has some very Throwing Muses-like sounds and rhythms to it (n.b. "Lash" and "Not Long Before") (are there any connections between the bands?). The Laurie Freelove album appeals to my Jane Siberry side (though doesn't come close to touching Jane). Go buy them all. :) -john tempest!john@sunne.east.sun.com ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 20 Feb 92 14:18 GMT From: Merow!! I'm new, and I have a question. I came from the LoveHounds list to ecto and don't know any of Happy Rhodes' music so far. I live in Stuttgart, Germany, how can I get hold of her records? Any German ectophiles like to answer, please. Or is there a mail ordering service who ships to Germany? It would also be ok, if someone could tape me a few songs to get an impression. Thanks, Karl.
