I didn't think it would be hard to convince me. Greg, your reasons were the most convincing. Incidentally, while I was there I also bought my tickets to the concert. Numbers 000355 and 000356 if anyone is keeping track. The store I bought it from, Discovery Disks, in the Penn student union, currently has Warpaint listed as #15 of the top 25 sellers right now. The first was some time ago, just before I ordered _Warpaint_. I don't remember much about it, but it did feature a rather peculiar image of the world, which I can remember dreaming about in other contexts ... specifically, the world from orbit looks like someone has taken an medium altitude airial (sp?) view of fields, roads towns, etc, and wrapped it around a sphere. No sea or anything, just solid land. Unfortunately (shame!) I can't remember what Happy was doing in the dream ... but it *did* prompt me to get my finger out and order the album. The second dream was about a week ago. I imagined that I was going to one of the concerts (am I irritated by the fact that I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic at the moment? Damned right I am!) - but the concert seemed to be in the main assembly hall of my old secondary school (translation: high school). I was front-row centre (naturally!), so she was just in front of me. She was (in my dream) this tall woman, with flowing blond hair and a flowing white dress. She came across as ... not so much nervous, but rather coy. Oh yes, she had a guitar with her. And that's about all I can remember, I'm afraid. Keep well, Stephen ======================================================================== Date: 13 February 1992 14:42:35 CST From: Subject: Chazerai To start, a correction. In my reportage of Jack Kilpatrick's essay on wor ds and wavelengths the other day, I misquoted him to the effect that after the 90% of words that should be easily understandable, another 90% should be under- standable in context, and the remaining 1% should be open to fun on the part of the writer from the standpoint of leaving readers to their own devices in terms of understanding. I rechecked the original copy yesterday, and it turns out that he said that another _9_ % should be understandable in context. I may be a lot of things, but I'm not innumerate. :-) As I write this, I'm listening to a talk by Camille Paglia, the author of _Sexual Personae_, over the public radio. She talks very fast. Nobody who is asking questions during the Q and A period talks that fast. When somebody asked a long question, she replied something like, "Hurry up, you're making me impatient." (I wish I hadn't forgotten the exact words within minutes after hearing them.) This, to me, succinctly sums up the difference between Camille Paglia and ecto: on ecto, one can write at length without making people impatient. _In re_ the remarks the other day about SBK records not signing Happy, however well they thought of her music, because they were preoccupied with promoting Wendy Wall: I am sure there are stories widely circulated in show biz of people being denied big breaks, only to make it big later on anyway. None of these occur to me just now, however. The only ones that do both concer n my own profession: One is the apocryphal story about how the eminent sociol- ogist, Otis Dudley Duncan, was denied tenure at the University of Chicago, only to make it big at a number of other elite departments. The second concerns how the U of C rejected William Foote Whyte's dissertation, only to have Harvard accept it after Whyte took it there; it eventually became the basis for his renowned book, _Street Corner Society_. The third, and mercifully last, exampl e concerns someone I once went to graduate school with. This fellow was, to put it mildly, a twerp; just about all the other graduate students thought so too, and eventually succeeded in hounding him out of the department. Eventu- ally the U of C--which had turned me down a number of years earlier--took him in, end even awarded him a Ph.D. a number of years later. I have run into this man a number of times over the years; and while he has racked up some respect- able professional achievements, he continues to be a twerp. If there is any common thread through all this, it may be that the University of Chicago could be the most fallible university in all of Hyde Park; lest I be accused of grat- uitous U of C bashing, let me state for the record that some time ago, I came to this conclusion: that the three institutions that are the _sine qua nons_ of the ultimate survival of human society are the University of Chicago, the Internet, and National Public Radio. To bring this digression back to Earth, however: SBK may or may not be the University of Chicago of record labels; but I implore you not to forget what label it was that first brought Wilson Philips to the attention of audiophiles everywhere :-) . Nobody's perfect! In looking through Gaffa this morning, I was delighted to read Vickie's reminiscences of _Rock Follies_, the wonderful BBC->PBS miniseries from the late 70's that first brought Rula Lenska to the consciousness of Americans, even before she ascended to the pantheon of great hair-goo pitchpersons in history. Would that this series and its sequel would join the ranks of public TV's pledge-period perennials, but something tells me it's not gonna happen. :-(' I also noted Jessica's speculation on the prospects for a bitch@wherever (or whatever) mailing list, and was amused to note the resemblance of this con- cept to the real-life alt.flame newsgroup. Did life anticipate art this time? :-) While on the subject of public broadcasting, re Woj's query about the Robyn Hitchcock interview: I didn't hear it, nor does it sound like the sort of thing that the NPR station here would carry. I suggest you contact the station in your area that ran it; many public radio program suppliers do sell tapes of their shows. _In re_ Kiri's observations on cells: with the outer of the two cytosol layers being the ectoplasm, it hit me that we may have lucked out in that this mailing list could, under other circumstances, been called "cytosol," rather th an the name by which we have come to know and love it. On the other hand, were the hypothetical Ecto industrial machine (of which more later) to branch out into its own retail outlets for its hypothetical products, what better name for its stores than CYTO SOL'S, in the great tradition of Mad Man Muntz, etc.? :-) _In re_ Martin's extension of the earlier laundry list of reasons to buy the Warpaint CD: I am reminded of a column by the then classical music writer for the Chicago _Sun-Times_, Robert Marsh, in which he related how he once rece ived a strange package, kind of mangled, with visible tire tracks running throu gh the middle of the box. When he opened it up, he found two haves of a CD that the truck had broken straight down the middle. Apparently, they've become sturdier since then--or have they? Ideas have come to me for a couple of ways the ecto manufactory could expa nd from consumer goods into financial services. The first of these is the WARPAINT CD CD. This consists simply of an ordinary certificate of deposit, opening which would net the lucky bank customer you-know-what, instead of a toaster or some other more traditional--and pedestrian--premium. The other idea, admittedly more grandiose than the first, is the ALL THINGS INSURANCE COMPANY. Its jingle for property and casualty insurance could, of course, be "I had another accident last night/I tripped over a soul in flight..." and so on. Its jingle for life insurance could be "Tell me all your plans/For the great beyond..." etc. But if it wanted to gain a reputation for innovation in the insurance industry, it might do so with the MEOW EOW EO veterinary health plan. Personal to Steve V.: As far as I know, both the Chicago and New York marathons have chair divisions. This would give you a pretext to travel to not one, but two ecto population centers. Personal to Doug: Go head and post the lyrics to "MTA." My recording of it is deeply imbedded under other stuff (as re my recordings of Wendy Wall and Wilson Philips), and I wouldn't be able to get at it anytime soon anyway. I was amused by your observation that Charlie's plight would be closer to Sergei Krikalev's if the transit authority folded; here in Chicago, the CTA is making noises about more service cuts (on top of those it just did) in a few months; it could get to the point that folding altogether would scarcely differ from the status quo. Cynics may find it appropriate that the Boston Government Center now stands on the site of historic Scollay Square, to which the song alludes, and which was sort of the Combat Zone of its day; paying hookers to screw you, in the minds of some, has merely given way to paying politicians to do the same, in the form of "revenue enhancements." :-) Chicago readers of these pages may want to look at the new _New City,_ which has a feature on My Bloody Valentine. Time to start on the Middle Passage back home. To research someone else's traditional parting shot: FU_TAH. Other racers have told me of the organizers coming after them to eject them from the start, but getting to run anyway when TV cameramen ran over to film the spectacle and the organizers backed off to avoid looking like evil goons. The Chicago Marathon is a possibility. I would be interested to know details of the course, such as elevation profile and road quality. I would prefer a marathon that I could easily do in under 2:10 for the following reason: Boston, another ectophile/gaffan population center, has an excellent marathon that I apparently have not qualified for yet. Perhaps next year. In general I am more likely to show up for something in the 8K-15K distance range because I can do many more of those a year than marathons. I suspect that until I can manage to go pro in wheelchair racing, I will not have the time to train for more than one or two marathons per year. ObHappy: Although I should go to bed right away (it's nearly 11 pm now) so I can get up at 5:30 to go skiing tomorrow, I have to stay up to listen to Phobos. ======================================================================== From: katefans@chinet.chi.il.us (Chris n Vickie) Subject: Alan's post Date: Fri, 14 Feb 92 2:18:25 CST I'll take care of Alan in Zimbabwe, since it's more complicated for him. NO! NO! NO! ***PLEASE*** send your address to **ME**. I've been keeping the Master Ectophile address list since before Christmas! Now is not the time to have addresses wandering all over the place. My list will be incomplete, Jessica's list will be incomplete and H&K's list will be incomplete. ** PLEASE ** send your address to ** ME ** ...if you did not receive a HappyHat card, or if you have not sent it to me already. Here's why....now that people are starting to buy the WP CD and are writing to Happy using the address on the CD, it's not always possible for H&K to tell if someone is an Ectophile or not. I'm keeping the Ectophile address list as a double-check for H&K. If a mailing is going out to *everybody* on their list, then it doesn't matter soch. Philes & non-philes alike will get whatever it is. But if it's a special something for Ectophiles only (like the greeting card) they need to know for sure who is who. That's where my list comes in to play. Send your address to Jessica & H&K if you want, but **ALSO** send it to me, please. I'll call Kevin myself and get this straight with him. Hey, playing in the other room is TNT's coverage of the Olympics. They're showing some of the lower-ranked skaters in the men's short program. This moniker was applied to a friend & I who used to get together several years ago for day-long synthesiser jams, parts of which we used to record on his four-track. The music (if it can sensibly be dignified by that name) was dire but we had great fun doing it. A mutual friend gave me the idea for the name by attempting to construct various names for the duo out of our two names. My other half was a guy called Graham Noble. Then he got a sampler, I realised that I wasn't a musician after all, and that was the end of that. Actually I still listen to some of the tapes we made from time to time, they're good aversion therapy for the times I start thinking "I fancy getting the keys out and having a play". Works like a charm! Also, from much further back, was "The Pogles". It may not help North American readers to know that the name was ripped off from "The Flower Pot Men", but there you have it.
