A couple of months ago, I was in a nearby record store looking at their used CD section. I came across WARPAINT. After hearing many good things about Happy on gaffa, I snatched the CD right up. Anyway, I liked it a lot and soon after that decided to special order the ECTO CD. So now I have two of her CD's, and another one on order (REARMAMENT). At first I was rather startled by the difference in the lower and upper registers of her voice. I would have sworn they were two different singers! I can't access the archives on Internet, and would like to know more about Happy. Could someone give me information about Happy? Like, where is she from, her influences, and how she started out recording? Thanks! I would also like to know what the terms "rearmament" and "equipoise" mean..?? Happy Holidays everyone.. (I trust the deletions haven't distorted Vickie's argument) On the basis of the song alone I would agree with this. But Peter Fitzgerald-Morris (not sure the name's exactly right - the "Homeground" guy anyway) posted in gaffa that "Lily" is the name of the person who taught KaTe the ritual as a protection from psychic attack. I've not used quote marks there, but it is as near as I can remember the words he actually used. I assume he posted this from an informed position, is that not correct? On the assumption that Peter knows whereof he speaks, and that I didn't misunderstand his post, I definitely interpret the song as autobiographical. And thence as evidence that, as Chris has said, that KaTe believes some pretty wierd things. I repeat that this is based on my understanding of what Peter posted. If I've misunderstood him, or if he was mistaken, then I agree that the balance of probabilities (given the evidence of KaTe's work over the years) favours a story-telling interpretation. I'd be interested, Vickie, in why you discount Peter's suggestion. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. With the release of "RhodeSongs" we are willing to go even farther and announce the arrival of "the next big thing"--whatever that means! You see, Happy defies catagorization; she sings with pure emotion and a four-octave range that reaches the highest of highs and the very lowest of lows. "RhodeSongs" is her seventh release, and offers the past, present, and future of Happy Rhodes-- two or three selections each from earlier albums are heard as a retrospective glimpse. There are acoustic versions of "Save Our Souls" from "Equipoise" and "In Hiding" off of "Warpaint". To top it off htere is an unreleased track, "Summer", a live version of "Given In", and a stirring acoustic cover of David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes", with the familiar lyric that only she could deliver with as much meaning, "I'm happy, I hope your happy too." These tunes depict the quieter side of an artist who knows no boundaries, having explored the deep, darker side of creation on earlier releases while offering hopeful and accessible perspective on "Equipoise" with equal grace and passion. This week's artist is KaTe and they have been playing a videos for RubberBand Girl, Eat the Music, and the ASPEL tape of Moments of Pleasure!!!!! And, guess who's the proud owner of a Sony MiniDisc now! {'bout time being a KaTe fan deserved some credit} The question you had to answer for the call-in was "who is credited with 'discovering' KaTe? Anyway, I bought Rhodesongs on the recommendation of the owner of my local CD store and was REALLY impressed! When money allows I intend to pick up EVERYTHING I can find by Happy. I have a question for you out there, though. Does Happy tour at all, or does she do live concerts? I live in Syracuse in Upstate New York, and her record label is based just outside Albany, NY, which is just down the road (well, sort of!) I would LOVE to see her do some of those songs live. And, while I'm about it - how IS she live? Sorry if this is one of those FAQ things, but I've not seen much mention of it on the list recently, so I thought I'd ask. Some of these may be unpopular with the Ecto population, but I feel safe from being flamed here on Ecto. Here goes............ (in no particular order) __________ Ozric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift These guys are just sort of a trippy, progressive (in the 70s sense), jammin', sometimes reggae influenced feast. I expect most of you will hate this. I love it. BTW, it's all instrumental. __________ Ozric Tentacles - Vitamin Enriched Actually, this is sort of cheating. This is a 6 CD box set of their first six albums (previously available only on cassette). In includes material recorded from 1984-1989, but the box was just released, so hey, it counts as 1993 for me. 80 songs and over 6 hours of more trippy progressive music. __________ Rush - Counterparts I know, I know. The bands you pick up in adolscence often stick around for a long time. I still love 'em. They even step up and depict homosexuality in a positive, albeit sad, light in the song "Nobody's Hero." :) It made me proud to be a fan. __________ Kate Bush - The Red Shoes Ah, Kate (swoon). I must admit that it wasn't what I expected, but if it were, that would have been boring. Much of Kate's attraction to me is her willingness to step out of the mainstream and experiment. I also love that she can make me cry...that's always the sign of a great song for me. __________ David Sylvian/Robert Fripp - The First Day What can I say about David Sylvian?! I've loved him ever since I heard Secrets of the Beehive (1987). My "First Day" CD even came with a bunch of postcards...his packaging is always so nice. Fripp's influence adds an edge to the music which was absent before. Fascinating listening! If you like this, the "Jean the Birdman" singles are a must. __________ Happy Rhodes - RhodeSongs I hadn't heard Happy until about 2 months ago when I bought Equipoise. About 2 weeks ago I got this and I like it better. I suppose compilations shouldn't really qualify, but I find this one to be excellent, plus it's got new/previously unreleased material. I adore the tribute version of "Feed the Fire." __________ Squeeze - Some Fantastic Place These guys are just plain fun. Glenn Tilbrook has to be one of my favorite people in all of music. He seems to be so (what's the word)...nice. Their songs are always melodic, often silly, sometimes poignant, yes, even poppy, but the overall effect is an irresistable urge to sing along. I think I'll succumb to the urge. __________ Concrete Blonde - Mexican Moon Another superb outing by Johnette and the guys. I hope the rumours of their breakup are untrue. Sorry I never posted a review of when I saw them on Nov. 20. Maybe I'll get to it sometime soon. __________ Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians - Respect Robyn's gone a bit more mainstream with this one, but there's still enough of his trademark strangeness to keep away the masses. However, there are some strikingly beautiful melodies here as well. Definitely seem him live if you get the chance ... one of the most entertaining evenings you can imagine. __________ Echolyn - Suffocating the Bloom Okay, it's a 1992 release really, but I got it in 1993. This is a progressive band from Pennsylvania that reminds at times of Gentle Giant, Happy the Man, Marillion, and others, but is still distinct in its style. Worthy of repeated, even consecutive (something I don't do much) listenings. Happy holidays to everyone, no matter what it is you're celebrating. I've just been diagnosed with laryngitis, so at the moment I'm thankful for the ability to communicate electronically. See you after the new year. ___________________________________________________________________________ Jeff Pearce pearceja@wl.wpafb.af.mil And though I'd like to laugh At all the things that led me on Somehow the stigma still remains David Sylvian - "Waterfront" ___________________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 23 Dec 93 12:14:19 EST From: ken@zeus.st.3com.com (Ken Descoteaux) Subject: Re: My top 10 > __________ > > Rush - Counterparts > > I know, I know.
