Some claim that the large amount of Scandinavian blood in our residents can explain the popularity of this drink. I don't know about that ... The mesomorphic women depicted therein have both breasts and muscles. When they're not flexing, it is said, they look not very different from other women. I find them attractive. Charles Osgood's essay on the radio this morning spake of how if you don't like the conclusions of one medical study, it's easy to find another with the opposite conclusion. Bob's second example seems to be associated with all that in my mind. Atypical of most human breeds: nice turn of phrase. I guess the law of large numbers assures that there will be some empirical incidence of just about any kind of dog walker, like any other genre of person. But, happily, most of them are nicer than that. Hopefully, it will be feasible to have some tapes of Dave on Jeopardy for the St. Stephen's Day (aka Boxing Day) bash at Gaffa Central. If there are several appearances on his part, I should be able to catch the one on Friday, when I expect to be home. (After I wrote the above, the post came in from Vickie, assuring that she was taping.) Now that's a big word, so you should probably practice it alot, and ask your parents for advice on the pronunciation...though, you probably will have a problem pronouncing pronunciation, too...I know, just ask them what it's called when two people of the same sex have sexual relations with each other. Now, do you children know what sexual intercourse is???? What's that, Heather? That's right! I do mean f___ing! Well, as I've said before, some things are beyond the scope of this show. All I want to get through your tiny little skulls --if the homo- phobic religious right hasn't already turned your brains to pre-pubescent mush-- is that WE SHOULD ACCEPT EVERYBODY AS THEY ARE --WHETHER THEY'RE HOMOSEXUALS OR LESBIANS. What Heather? Yes, lesbianism IS what all those women do in the movie Hannah Does Her Sisters...actually, it's a lot more than that, but such subtleties are often lost even on adults, so I won't even try to explain them to litlle Stepford-urchins like yourselves. Well, that's all we have time for today. I'll see all of you darling little children tomorrow, when we'll discuss NAFTA and its affects on international trade, espec- ially as it impacts GATT negotiations with the European Econ- omic Community. Bye bye....huh,huh. Somehow, I doubt this happened. And what does it mean, 'to accept someone as they are', anyway? Should we accept homosexuals AS homosexuals? I've also been through a dark period and listened to NIN a lot during that time. I found his music to be such a release of all the frustration, pain, anger, et al...it could be quite draining at times. To cut the story short, if NIN didn't help me out of that period it helped me survive it...for that I will always love _Pretty Hate Machine_; _Broken_; and _Fixed_: and I will buy whatever else he releases, even if I cant't identify with it anymore (or at least, rarely). Whoever was asking about _Broken_ (sorry I can't remember your name) yeah, it's much thrashier than PHM, but that was due to the fact that he toured for something like 2 years playing PHM in a thrashier way and that greatly afftected the way he wrote for _Broken_. I'll have to come up with a Best of for '93 but it'll have to wait until after Christmas so that I can include what I get for Christmas (if anything) and what I buy with Christmas $$. WRT Happy: I've given _Warpaint_ and _Equipoise_ as Christmas gifts to 2 of my friends this year, *and* (I think this one is more important) during the semester I wrote a short story based on "Cohabitants". If anyone is interested in reading it - mail me, or perhaps I could post it to the list, I should warn you though - it's approx. 12 pages dbl-spaced, typed. [...] Speaking of killer mice, I don't know if this is what you were talking about, but I was browsing a magazine rack on the BC ferry today. I picked up a copy of Discover and there was an article about a horrible-sounding illness that's killed a number of people in the southwestern US, mainly on Navajo reserves. I hadn't heard about this one before. Anyway, there was a lot of rambling stuff about the clever boffins and researchers who figured out it was an obscure virus carried by mice that was the problem. The *really* interesting bit for me, though, was shoved off in a sidebar. Turns out that the Navajo of the area have ancient traditions concerning mice. Specifically, they're prohibited from having anything to do with them, as they are said to spread illness and such. Anyone coming into contact with mice should burn their clothes, clean themselves, etc. I found this pretty cool! It sounds quite plausible that the Navajo people have had to deal with this horrific virus before, and set up some pretty darn sensible rules concerning avoiding mice. Of course, us clever scientifically-trained Western folk would likely dismiss clothes-burning following touching mice as a silly primitive superstition, but the Navajo who still maintain the old traditions are darn well better off for doing so. Well, I thought it was cool anyway! :) There wasn't much else there, so I went back and sat on an ugly vinyl seat and admired the spectacular scenery outside instead. Darn! It's groovy scenery! Dark green mountains brushed with a bit of snow, coming to meet the ocean, small islands dotted about, deep fjordy-kind of inlets. Looks good even when overcast like today!
