I saw Chip last night and he reminded me that I am hopelessly behind in my ecto reading. I was in L.A. last week (sorry I didn't call Neal, maybe next time...) and it was cold and even rained *twice*. But I still made myself get up at daybreak every day of the conference and go running so as to fully sample the California lifestyle. Chip mentioned the party at Vickie's on Sun. I have a wedding at 4pm, but I'll certainly try to stop by before that, probably closer to noon or 1pm so I can meet Dave Dixon. I'll have to leave by 2:30pm though. Speaking of NanuNanu, I will have the great priviledge of visiting Mork and Mindy's hometown, Boulder, CO over New Years. Actually, I'll be in Denver, but Cheryl has promised to show me around Boulder where she went to school and still has friends. Are there any Colorado ectopeople other than Doug in Fort Collins? And how far is Fort Collins from Denver/Boulder? Is it worth a visit? Will you be around, Doug? You can send me private mail if you like (mjm@zylab.mhs.compuserve.com). I've been reading love-hounds more than ecto because I've wanted to catch the Kate-NYTower accounts. I've yet to see Meredith's... is it there somewhere? Also, let's not forget that temporarily unsubscribed ectopersonality Valerie Nozick will be joined the unseen masses of people slowly converging on Chicago. I believe she'll be here before the 1st of the year. I urge the rest of you out there to take a moment and seriously consider the eventuality that you must ultimately face: you will be drawn closer and closer to Chicago, it is only a matter of time. Hear the big sucking sound? Why resist it? At least come for a visit... :-) -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1993 11:43:48 -0500 (EST) From: SANDOVAL@stsci.edu Subject: Aperture doors and Doom... :) Hi everyone, Jessica "jessica@maurolycus.rutgers.edu" said >Ugh. have any of you played doom yet? >I think it is taking over the world.. >it has certainly taken over my office >and home and is #1 topic of conversation >for a week straight. we're *starting* to >get sick of it but still can't stop playing it, >and we don't even have the full version yet. >i just tried to look at comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action >to see what there was about doom, but it's >impossible - you think ecto is busy? HA! > > jessica I also noticed that c.s.i.p.g.a has been down for awhile. I wasn't that interested in Doom before it came out, but I got swept up in all the hype :) and just had to try it. I did play Wolfenstein, and Doom is really a trip and a half. Quite violent of course, but I can't imagine what it would be like over a modem or network, with lots of people running around. :) It's pretty creepy, but fun. BTW, I have finished it, and the ending is really quite poor... Then woj "woj@remus.rutgers.edu" said: >>NASA has found that the repairs made to the Hubble Space >>Telescope were not as successful as they first thought. >>Someone forgot to remove the lens cap. >> >>-- >>Ed Symanzik >>Michigan State University >>zik@enoch.cl.msu.edu > >john, you can abuse the originator of that joke, if you'd like. ;) > >+w Well, we've heard this joke, and MANY others, as you can imagine. :) But, there actually is a bit of reality in this joke, though I'm sure they don't realize it. For those who don't know, there is an aperture door at the front of the telescope. It's basically a door that is used to protect the primary mirror during servicing, deployment, etc. When the Hubble was first deployed, the door remained closed until the telescope was released. Then the door was opened remotely. This was due to a concern that the primary mirror might be contaminated from shuttle's manuvering jets. The first run-throughs for the servicing mission had the telescope being deployed, once again, with the door closed. This made all of us here VERY nervous, because we could just see the mission going great, and the door not opening. :) So it was decided, after lots of tests, that the doors could safely be opened while the telescope was still attached to the shuttle. That way if the door didn't open, the astronauts could open it. So, that joke was actually a fear of a lot of people. As it is, everything went well, and things are still going well. :) John ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1993 10:12:28 -0700 From: "Alex Gibbs" Subject: Re: The power of music, NIN, pain, me, religion Michael Colford : > Cc: A lovely bunch of people Yes it is!!! :) I'm literally about to fall asleep right now, but after getting such cool feedback from Michael I just wanted to say Ecto really is a special place on the net! > Stay positive! "Straight out of the new age and the world of demons and devils," the Reverend Joseph Chambers says. The cult of Barney, Chambers says, is further proof that "America is under siege from the powers of darkness." Chambers further complains: "Barney is teaching kids that we must accept everyone as they are -- whether they're homosexuals or lesbians." Chambers' Charlotte, N.C.-based radio ministry is putting out a "Barney the Purple Messiah" booklet, previously titled "Barney the New Age Demon." Explains Chambers: "It's a less provocative title." How did the designers prevent the mirrors from deforming during launch? If I remember correctly, the problem with the primary was that the outer section was over-ground by about .02 cm.. wouldn't an applied force of 3-4 g's during launch make the mirrors bend that much anyway? In |> fact, I think it's brilliant.) This seems to be a good cue to mention something I noticed about ETM recently. When I first heard it on my home system, it really grated on me. When I heard it on my car stereo, it was less annoying. On my boom box, I started to like it. Then it went back on my main system - and it grated again. It seem to all come down to the mix - the high end is mixed *very* hot, and from a CD, on a good system, it almost hurts (like nails on a chalkboard). But if I turn down the treble, that goes away, and I can listen to the swirl of the music and the slight variations that are what the song is supposed to be about (musically). So if you've been disliking ETM, try turning down the treble and giving it a fresh listen with an open mind. You may be surprised. woj re-recommends: |> currently in the process of reading the griffin & sabine series by nick |> bantok (and preparing to indulge in his new book, _the egyptian |> jukebook_, which meredith gifted to me last weekend). beautiful stuff! |> i'll just re-echo (cho cho cho) kelly's recommendation for them from a |> few weeks back - read them! I checked last night and found myself to be wrong on most counts (accept the recommendation, of course). I did see that many of the players on Every DOg Has It's Day appear in minor roles on Game Theory's Lolita Nation though, so the connection wasn't totally spurious. I bought Griffin & Sabine when it came out and thought it was one of the most marvelous books I had found in a long time. I was a little disappointed by the ending, but thought the whole concept was fantastic. I bought the second one when it came out, thought it looked great but was a waste of time besides the art, as absolutely nothing happened. I read the third in the bookstore, and was even more infuriated (outside the stupendous art again) as I was foolishly duped into believing the story was progressing with interesting twists and turns before it just crashes to a halt. I've still fondly eyed Egyptian Jukebox. Let me know how it is. I meant to say something earlier in the month when the review of the Aimee Mann concert came out in the Reader, and it even fit nicely with the appearances thread. The author, Stephen Esmedina, writes reviews that are baffling and infuriating, where even a positive review ends up leaving bad impressions. He liked the AImee show a fair amount (I think), although for some reason he doesn't like any til tuesday songs, including the wonderful Everything's Different Now album. Here is what he said about her appearance: "Mann herself is no longer a poster babe for those with the chills for asexual sirens. She is now gaunt, with a reptilian body and a thatch of tumbled straw for hair. She resembles a transsexual Sting, strangely alluring without approximating anything that could be called pretty." WHat a well spoken idiot. Neal ======================================================================== Subject: Re: DOOM!
