That comes pretty close to being an un-Ectomentary expression :-) There's no reason why you should share Dave's opinions on "Equipoise", but equally no need to pour such scorn on him for not sharing your views. Lighten up a bit, or you'll give yourself ulcers :-) Personally I find some of Dave's comments ring true. The lengths of the tracks cannot be disputed. I don't find any of them outstay their welcome, but it's something Happy should beware of. The discipline of keeping songs short can sharpen the mind considerably. Prolixity is a terrible thing. As for the production. Well, IMO, it's noticeably busier than on "Warpaint" and several times seems to have been less carefully and sympathetically thought through. One thing that particularly bugs me is that too often a string-synth backdrop seems to have been flown in just to fill out the sound, when a sparser arrangement might have allowed the individual instrumental and vocal parts to speak effectively for themselves. If a basic arrangement is too weak to stand up without the support of string synth padding, then maybe it should be rethought. Having said that, "Equipoise" will most definitely have a place high in my 1993 top ten. But it's not perfect, and nor are any of the other records I've bought this year. Happy has set high standards in her work, and in many ways "Equipoise" maintains and extends her reputation for that. That doesn't mean that for some people it may fail to hit the mark in every respoect, and perhaps more importantly it doesn't mean that critical comments should be suppressed. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. However, there are still copies floating around out there. I haven't seen any in stores, but I got mine from Columbia music club about 2 months ago. Strangely enough, I ordered _Choke_ from them after it had been deleted but had no idea that I was getting something special. About 2 days after I got the CD, people on alt.music.alternative were talking about how impossible the album is to find because it is no longer being made in the US. This really shocked me since I got it from one of the most mainstream sources for music. Anyway, Columbia may have another copy, if you're interested. I totally agree. I couldn't have said it better myself! BTW, thanks, Vickie, for the Sheila Chandra interview. I knew nothing about her until I read it, and now I think I need to get some of her stuff. I almost bought one of her discs last night, but a friend of mine informed me that Kirsty MacColl is coming to Atlanta in 2 weeks. I couldn't stop. Meredith...Lucky you! I have to admit to being one of that supposedly improbable set...a moderate Kate fan. I like alot of her stuff, but I'm crazy about little of it. (Aside: When I first heard Happy, it was in reference to a conversation I had with a friend who, upon hearing that I thought this or that about Kate, said "Oh, then I bet you'd like Happy Rhodes better" and taped EcTo and Warpaint for me). Though I can surely empathize with your excitement (if ever I were to meet Peter Gabriel, I'd probably pass out!). Anyway, for me, seeing Kate Bush in person would be exciting in as much as I would believe she's real...somehow, she always seemed a little un-so....This is not an insult, merely a commentary of how Kate exists (or doesn't :) ) in my mind. I was unaware Kate's a vegetarian; though I am aware that she's beautiful (even if she is an endo morph : crossfile under somatotypes thread)...and, somehow, scary. Not scary BECAUSE she's beautiful, more like you could imagine Kate as the post-feeding Gabrielle (provided Cruise doesn't screw up IwtV: crossfile under the Lestat thread). [OH NO ANOTHER ASIDE...I have no problem at all picturing Kate as the woman who belongs to that voice. My SO (or as we prefer, Spouse Equivalent : she works in a research lab and the reference is to "gram equivalent weights"), on the other hand sees pictures of Happy and shakes her head saying "The deep voice, I can picture, but that high sweet voice? I can't believe it's her!")] Anyway (really, this time) what got me started was the bit about Kate not seeming to enjoy the signing....ahh, there's the rub. I went to WOMAD at Saratoga. YKW was there...Kathy (my SpEq) said, isn't that Happy Rhodes (we'd been expecting to spot her, naturally) why don't you go say hi? Now friends, I know Happy is different in that she is very accessible, but she seemed to be in the middle of a conversation, and I'm generally reluctant to butt in on the privacy of ANYONE let alone someone I admire, and, as some sort of futile courtesy, I didn't approach her (probably the ONLY frigging EcTophile there...and ...) futile, I say, because she would never know that she hadn't been "bothered", only that she hadn't been bothered (got it?). Now I am willing to "own" (thanks for sharing (tm) ) that the discomfort is due to my insecurity...but we hadn't been properly introduced....never mind.... It just strikes me that the celbrity/fan relationship is a strange and fragile one (Yeah, I know, she's on the way up, and, at least for now, appreciates her fans.....but, I have to wonder if I will (uh, I mean, WOULD) want to be "bothered" by strangers (even gentle, nice ones) approaching me and saying, "Oh, I LOVED your video (or movie, or novel, or dissenting opinion...)" Not that I would consider the person a pest, but I wouldn't know how to act, and I wouldn't want to appear stand-offish, but probably would, anyway, since I'd be shy (or worse, falsely ebullient).
