Canadian customs officials were unavailable to confirm or deny whether they were confiscating papers Sunday, but had threatened to do so earlier in the week. The Detroit News ran a story about the Karla Homolke manslaughter trial in Canada from the Washington Post. Homolke was convicted last summer of manslaughter for her part in the sex slayings of 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy and 15-year-old Kristen French. Justice Francis Kovacs ordered a publication ban on the trial to ensure the murder trial of Homolke's husband, Paul Teale, is unbiased. But on Tuesday the Washington Post published a story containing grisly details of the case. Some copies of the newspaper were reportedly available in Toronto magazine shops. Unlike the Washington Post, however, the News has an estimated circulation of 23,000 in southwestern Ontario, which could make it subject to Canada's laws. The Southam News reported that the Washington Post had not committed any crime because the newspaper is not distributed in Ontario. The office added, however, it would ``view any potential breach very seriously.'' -- I saw this story tonight on the program Now. I missed quite a bit of it, but it seems the Canadian government actually *did* confiscate USA newspapers at border stations. They also talked about television news broadcasts being blocked out, if they were on an American station but receivable in Canada. I'm not quite sure about that part of it. They did say that the Now report I saw was *not* being broadcast in border cities, under threat of suit by the Canadian government. Very strange. They also showed this week's Newsweek, which features a story about this murder case. In the US, that is. All Newsweeks shipped to Canada have been changed to delete that page. It's all very confusing. These murders have been a front page story in Toronto for *months*. I used to follow it, because I used to get the clips featuring the story. It seemed like every day there was something about Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy. I don't know who the client was (the client wanting the clippings) but they stopped coming through shortly after Paul Bernadin(sp?) was arrested. He wasn't even charged with the girls' murder the last time I saw a clip. Now I know that he was (seems he changed his name too. Strange) and his wife was also. I had assumed that his father would be charged also. I guess not. I should pick up a Newsweek to see what the story is all about. I think I got mine for $1.95. :) > >I wouldn't make that suggestion. "Sleeper" is a brand new album, so those >cut-outs you are seeing are promos, which aren't supposed to be sold. The >group doesn't make a dime off 'em. Well, I'm a free market kind of guy, so i don't subscribe to that ideology very wholeheartedly. I consider used record stores to be among the most splendid places on the earth. I imagine that most bands do not get all too worked up about a whole bunch of their promos being sold for pocket change. 'cos look at me. I liked what I heard and I ended up buying "abort" with -real- money! So, anyways, now they've made their 25 cents in royalty. :) In my case, the promo did serve a pretty good purpose. Of course, now that I know that I like Tribe, I can always redeem myself and buy a new copy of 'sleeper' and dispose of my illegally purchased promo using some environmentally correct method, making sure that no other potential fans ever hear this disc... What should be done with unwanted promos anyways? They don't make very good contests prizes as they're generally mutilated in some small, but annoyingly significant way. Just toss 'em away? That seems an awful shame-- especially since many fans consider certain promos to be collector items... I do, by the way, try to buy CDs by indie artists as new. Since I'm sort-of already on the topic, I might as well ask something that perhaps I shouldn't ask, but I really want to, and besides it deals with the Hapster! Is anybody else a bit perturbed/puzzled that it costs $15.99 to get discs through U.S. mail, when plenty of other really terrific indie record companies sell their CDs for $10-$12? (postage included) I know we want to keep Happy financially viable and all that, but...I dunno... $10 CDs oughta attract customers too. Hmm... I was just looking through the Sleeper booklet and I noticed an email address for a fan club... tribe@world.std.com how '93. Looks like Spielberg will finally get the critical acclaim he's been lacking for years. (Saw this at a screening - I believe it opens 12/15). This is quite a remarkable film - very moving, very beautifully shot in black and white. Three hours and 15 minutes go by before you notice. (For those who may not know, this movie is about how Oskar Schindler, played by Liam Neesan, managed to rescue about 1000 Jews from the Warsaw ghetto and Auschwitz.) Highly recommended. Yep, Carly Simon sings one song on the new Vollenweider album. I haven't heard it, but I've heard that it's fairly disappointing. Carly did "discover" Vollenweider: she was walking through some upscale store and heard some nifty harp-like music on the intercom; she went to the store manager to find out what it was, and the rest is history. There was an article about it in People Magazine a few years ago. I have three of Vol's albums. I used to like them a lot, but now they strike me as being kinda wimpy. Bravo) Subject: HR Date: Fri, 3 Dec 1993 03:04:33 +0300 (MSD) Hi ectophiles, Well, I'm one of those potentially large number of people who heard about HR from Paul Antonov (AKA Apg). He's just arrived here in St.Petersburg and brought to me the Warpaint and RhodeSongs (right now he attempts to sleep some meters from this clicking keyboard, as its' almost 3am :) ). I haven't played this music to any of my friends yet, so I can't relateanything about reactions of other people here, yet, but I can speak for myself. I am deeply impressed. The very first glimpses of the HR music gave the associations with early Suzanne Vega, some Kate Bush, and DCD, but altogether remixed and with entirely original and I'd even say a bit magical voice :) . I'll have to listen all of this over at least some dozen times more before I'll be able to formulate something more articulate, but for now I'd like just to say a big 'Thank you' to HR, for whatever that is. For the music, I guess. Some side notes also. I plan to participate in this mailing list shortly, but please don't put me on anything as of yet - I'll read your responses with the Apg's help and I'll solve some technicalities with my own subscription real soon now. Concerning your Semi-Sorta-Famous People list, Jessica - I can give you a small hint - put Apg (Paul Antonov, that is) on it - he's just that kind of semi-sorta famous people on the net here :) Ok, I think it's enough for now and I'm getting sleepy anyway :) Thanks for your attention, and as the last thing I want to say that IMHO the HR music fits the spirit of St.Petersburg very well... (the Russian Spb, not the one in Florida :) ). This city is also kinda magical, if anyone of you was here, s/he should know. -- Michael E. Hi there ectonics (not to mention ecfifths, and the ever-popular ecdominant sevenths!) First off, a hearty *thanks* to Vickie for her recent posting regarding her conversation with Happy! It's always wonderful to read a post like that. I know she's in Canada, land of the censored news, right now, but I just wanted to extend my thanks for yet another great post. Anthony at xymox, did you ever get my reply from Susanne? She faxed me a statement for you after I sent her your recent comments on the slowness of it all. Noting that the record company has a CD now, I guess we finally got through! Yay!! Please keep me posted on Happy developments down under. While semiklausing, I also hope Chris Boek got my last note containing Radio Australia's SW schedule with particular emphasis on sports programming (was it Cricket? Rugby? Soccer?). As most of you know I've been beset with modem problems, sort of. The darn thing works fine with most services, but after connecting to SAI one of us hangs up! I just today got it to connect to the atomic clock for the first time, but the date and time came back all wrong and my computer clock was set an hour and tem minutes early but the date was Dec. 11. Wierd. Does anyone know if USR modems are manufactured in the Twilight Zone? I have switched over to bouncemail on Genie so I will hopefully get your messages in a more timely fashion. I hope I can begin to be more of a participant. It's great to see ecto growing week by week, and still the same flame free environment. Hugs to everybody. I've been out of the scene for a while. I didn't realize that WDRE was bringing in Sarah M. I usually don't listen to that station except when WXPN pisses me off, and then I tune out when the commercials start. The show is probably sold out by now if it hasn't already happened. This weekend I PROMISE to: 1) Record my HGP tape. I think I'll pass on original music this time and offer something from my library. As my computer can talk, I may ask it to do the announcing. Or share duties with it. 2) On the back of that tape will be Happy's live appearance on WXPN for the recent pledge drive, in which she sings "Closer" with a nearly broken finger. A true ectonian collector's item. Well, that's it for now. May the heavens smile upon you, may peace be unto you, and may you all be happy inside.
