That's not enough for you? :-) Ok, ok, from the top: A conversation with Happy is like reading Ecto, it's lots of fun, always interesting, jumps from topic to topic, is sometimes sad (I cry on her shoulder too) and it never fails to be wonderful. Marotta-EP: This refers to the fact that Jerry Marotta does a lot of work in the Woodstock area. I told Happy that I had seen an album by a woman at Tower (can't remember her name) and a blurb said "She will be the next Joni Mitchell!" by Jerry Marotta. Her album was in the Tower listening station and after the first few tracks I said to Charley "Jerry Marotta *really* needs to hear Happy" (not that Happy is the "next Joni Mitchell" but rather that I wasn't very impressed with what I heard) and when I told her the story, Happy told *me* that Jerry was often in the Woodstock area, that Kevin had seen him around and talked to him many times, and that Kevin had given Jerry an "Equipoise." (Another Semi-Sorta Famous Person for the list. Jerry Marotta is Peter Gabriel's drummer.) Blossom: :-) Happy said she's often mistaken for the actress who plays the character Blossom on TV. She'll be walking in the mall and a kid will say "Mom! Look! It's Blossom!!" I said I should find out how to send some CDs to Mayiam...whatever her name is, so she'll know who Happy is when people say (in the future) "Aren't you Happy Rhodes?" 7 songs: Happy has written 7 songs so far for the next album. They're in an "unrefined" state, but she feels very good about them. They're still planning on going into the studio in February. No clues about the songs, but... Working title: Happy has a working title for the album, which may or may not end up to be the actual title and she said that the name has already appeared in something that Aural Gratification has sent out. contest: I said we should have a contest to find the name. If someone guesses it, you won't win anything, but you'll have the love, affection and undying gratitude of millions of Ectophiles around the world, as soon as there are millions of Ectophiles. In the meantime, I'll send the winner an UliHug(tm)! (Btw, Happy did *not* tell me what it was) zombie: :-) Happy caused a sensation in Villes de Bears because she made a zombie as a lawn ornament for Halloween :-). Many people commented that it was "very disturbing." Happy said there was a picture taken of it, and if I can get a copy for the archives, I will. cat: Court, I thought you'd like this. Happy, Kevin and Kelly dressed up for Halloween to go see a band. Happy was a cat, Kelly was a vampire and Kevin went as a Record Company Executive :-). (I told Happy she should have dressed up as Maraih Carey.) UcnFunk-Mar Lev: The band they went to see is called Uncle Funk's All Stars, and it's Jerry Marotta's band. Tony Levin also plays with the band when he's in town and was there that night. (Happy said he wore a wig!) Andreas Simon: Happy's interested in any news concerning Andreas Vollen- weider's new album and wondered if Carly Simon had anything to do with it. Has anyone heard of any kind of recent collaboration between Andreas and Carly? (Happy said that Carly discovered Andreas. I hadn't known that.) Yeszine: A Yes Fanzine, called "Wonderous Stories" will, at some point here, have an interview with Happy. NY Geiger: Happy and Kevin traveled to New York City specifically to see an HR Geiger exhibit at the Alexander Gallery. She was in heaven! We were talking about the huge "Alien(s)" alien being sold by The Sharper Image. I told her every time I see it (there are a couple of TSI stores here where I've seen the alien in the window) I always say to myself that I wish I were rich so I could buy it for her. What a present! She was touched, because she covets that thing! She's already checked the price on it :-) but it's way over $3000.00! She said that it would make a perfect lawn ornament for their place :-) (though it's probably not a good idea unless they set it in concrete.) Russia Paul: Paul from Moscow, Happy said Hi! She was impressed and flattered by your post. I told her that she might be hearing from you. Sandocards: John Sandoval, Happy said the idea of cards with information is fine with her. I know you're busy now (Blast Off For Hubble!) but when things settle down and if you still can make up something, you might send her a prototype. She's also looking forward to seeing the latest Homegound, and sends thanks to Krys & Peter for printing the interview. She's already received many letters from all over the world, as a direct result of Pert 1 of the interview. She also sends thanks to Pammy for sending her the first issue. The old Albany address is still in working order and will be for quite a few years to come. It's on 5 albums, so it won't be discontinued anytime soon. Happy says hi to the Ectophiles! She said she doesn't get nearly as many orders for albums now that more and more stores are carrying her music, but she still gets mail, and she's glad. She likes hearing feedback about her music, and likes hearing from fans. Time was, she knew who was buying her music because people could only get them directly from her. Now, though it's *great* that people are buying from stores (it encourages stores to order more) she kinda misses out on knowing who's out there, how they heard about her, and what they think of the music. My own take on the conversation is that if anyone feels like writing to Happy, go to it! Let her know how and where you found her music, and tell her a bit about yourself. I'm sure she'd appreciate it. I *know* that she appreciates the support she's gotten here. As each album comes out, and is, yet again, ignored, she appreciates the fact that Ecto exists and that we care, and that we support her through it all. Ecto and Ectophiles will *always* be very close to her heart. Word of mouth is *so* important to an artist like Happy, and she's greatful for the way we keep spreading the music. It's nice to be appreciated by an artist like Happy. She knows we care, and we know she cares about us. She's so wonderful, and you're all so wonderful! **HUGZ'A'LOT** Vickie "I took a little back road to fame. The same applies to all the rest of you. Fear not, Mitch. My contribution is winging its way to Doug as I type. It was dispatched Monday lunchtime, so I have every expectation of it beating the December 10th deadline. Perhaps if Doug isn't too overrun with material he might allow my contribution to run its full length (which I must confess is nearly a minute over the permitted ten) rather than fading it out. Perhaps the prospect of *that* will encourage more Ectophiles to get their contributions in... :-) -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. I saw it on the net a few months ago, and of course proceeded to pass it on to everyone I knew with e-mail. What is it about that story that lends itself to being forwarded? Thanks for posting it Neal. Bought the new Kirsty MacColl, new Cocteau Twins, an old Miranda Sex Garden and Danielle Dax's Dark Adapted Eye (5.99 used) this weekend. Like them all, though MSG gets tiresome after a while. You also have to listen to it loud, or the soft parts are completely inaudible. Going to see Kirsty MacColl tonight. I love the song Bad--can't wait to see her perform it. I'd always thought she reminded me of someone else, but I could never place it because I kept trying to think of other female singers. Then I finally realized it--maybe its just the accent, but she reminds me of the guy from the Housemartins/Beautiful South. Her satirical style is also similar to his. Everyone should get this month's issue of Pulse. Great cover (and interior) photos of Kate with fairly good interview, good interview with Kirsty MacColl, and I was shocked that I actually knew one of the people pictured and listed in their Holiday Picks section (check out "Subway Rider"--a friend of mine from college). Reminds me I need to give him some Happy music. Pulse also talks highly about Eleanor McElvoy. I believe I've heard the name here before--anyone actually heard or seen the album? I looked for it but couldn't find it. Also, I remember someone posting something about Kindness of Strangers. I saw their disk the other day, and remembered that the vocalist is one of the vocalists from This Mortal Coils Filigree and Shadows album (either Alison Limerick or Diedre and/or Louise Rutkowski)? Am I remembering this correctly? Anyone care to post a review of the album? Does anyone know of anything else ALison LImerick has done? I remember seeing she had a single in the Japanese charts, but have never seen anything by her. Well, bye for now! Meredith gains big points in my book (not that it's a contest or anything) when she says: |Anyway, the point I'm failing to make here is that _FtE_ is even more of a |religious experience when piped directly into your brain. There are things |going on underneath in some places (most notably in the second version of |"Possession" on the CD single, which I tacked as filler on the second side), |and there's nothing better than the album version of "Fear" on high volume |during the crescendo behind the first chorus, which is a religious experience |on par with the cathartic moment of Tori's _Precious Things_, albeit in a |different way. | |I haven't listened to an album this much since I got _Little Earthquakes_. |mjm was right- it blows the bleeping bananas off _TRS_. It's doing more |for me than _When I Was A Boy_, and all the other albums in my top 10 of |1993 massively pale in comparison to it. I already know every word of |every song by heart to sing along- I guess that's what happes when you |fall asleep to an album every night for a week and a half. :) Yes, yes, yes, yes, and YES! I first listened to it through earphones and it was like one long slow drift through snow-drifts in nirvana, or something like that :-). Glad to see you (and others too) agree. It's definitely way up there on the list and probably challenged so far only by TRS, which I like more and more and more and more. [This has happened with every Kate album I've ever listened to (but too a much smaller extent with TSW, that I can recall).] |and that copy came out sounding even worse- I have no way to set the input |levels, and the whole thing came out saturated. I tried again this evening on |my CD boom-box, and that seems to have come out a bit better, though there is |still some saturation in spots. At least I know it's not my new stereo, but |is this just bad engineering, or some diabolical plot to prevent people from |making reasonable dubs of the album? I noticed a similar phenomenon. Basically, FTE is recorded super LOUD. Don't know why. I had to set my level below 3: maybe even to 2.5 on a 0-10 scale. And even then it came out with some saturation. The only other artist I've noticed this about is Patty Larkin who also peaks out real easily. But this is the first time Sarah's done this. It's not you at all. |If I could, I'd set up a mailing list for Sarah talk, but alas, I don't have |the knowledge (or, at this point, the technology).
