No, but I'm interested to know if it's an official release (i.e. I'll be able to get it here in Australia) ... Have you heard it ? Is it much different/better than the other version ? Speaking of different versions of the single, in Australia we had a limited edition boxed version with nice full liner notes and a picture disc (all for only A$6.95). It's a pretty good set, and unlike the normal Australian release, it has Bashi-bazouk on it. Just thought I'd mention it *:). Now I have three copies of the CDsingle *:). I bought it straight away when I saw the single (i.e. without Bashi-bazouk), then I bought the US release when I heard it had an extra track, and then when the limited edition came out, well, what choice did I have but to get that as well *:) *:). If this other version turns out to be interesting I might end up with four! Hmmm. I suppose I should compare sound quality and stuff, it could be interesting ... First, to clear the record, I don't have anything to do with _LSL_, other than living in the same city as the people who put it out. Don't even know the folks. Also, nothing against their 'zine, but I find r.m.gaffa my best source of vital KaTe news. About Ingrid -- yes, I mentioned to Vickie in a message awhile back that I knew Ingrid and that she still lived here in Austin. I met her years ago (around '78-82, I think) when I pulled beers in a tiny local "pub" (ok, a bar that aspired to be considered a "pub") and Ingrid hung out and played music there whenever she was in town. Back then she was 1/3 of a band called "Grimalkin". They mostly floated around the country doing the medieval fair circuit. That circuit was a real lifestyle at the time, a good place for modern "gypsies" (pardon me if you're a real gypsy) to hide out from the real world. When not doing the circuit, the band played a broader range of music, extending to well-researched European folk (French, Latvian, others). After passing through town for two or three years, the band settled here full-time. They may have continued to do the fair circuit, but they also played more local/regional dates for several years before breaking up amicably. I think one of the two males in the group left about that time; I don't recall his name. (The other member of the group, and Ingrid's housemate at the time, was Tom Delaney. Tom also still lives in Austin. I've kept in better touch with Tom over the years; he's a semi-regular cycling partner.) Like most Austin musicians, or maybe most musicians everywhere, Ingrid worked other jobs to support her music. One of those jobs was pulling beers in that same pub on the nights when she wasn't playing there or somewhere else. I eventually had kids and quit hanging out in pubs (one doesn't necessarily follow the other, that's just how it worked out), and lost touch with some of the common friends that Ingrid and I shared. We still ran into each other around town off and on. I heard she'd gotten married and that she was concentrating on her research, performance, and recordings of Latvian music. The weird thing is that the last time I saw Ingrid had to be 6-7 years ago. Then Vickie replied to that old personal message of mine and mentioned that Ingrid was sometimes discussed in ecto. I'd never subscribed to ecto, but figured it might make a nice supplement to r.m.gaffa, so I subscribed just last week. The very next day I ran into Ingrid in a cool local toy store. She's doing fine, blah, blah, blah (personal chit-chat), and was there buying stocking stuffers for her 6-yr old child. I mentioned to her that her name came up in some of the net music discussion groups and she seemed pleased. (She's computer-literate but not a net person at all.) Anyway, hope this personal blurb doesn't bore anyone too much, but I wanted to follow up to Vickie's message and let those of you who like Ingrid's music know that she was happy to hear of the exposure and discussion. -- Steve ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Steve Williams I still dream of Org[ao]non. stevew@hal.com HaL Computer Systems Austin, Texas ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 15 Dec 92 0:44:52 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: Ingrid Karklins (live sighting) Hey! Gee, up here in "snow country" (Hanover, NH), we got nothing but a dusting. For the last 3 years, all of the snow has gone south of us. There's something really wrong when I have to drive down to Mass. to go XC skiing! I was in Boston for the Blizzard of '78. That was fun (unless you were one of the people who had their homes wrecked by the storm, or who froze to death in their cars on the Mass Pike...). I went out for a walk while the wind was still up; I stepped off a curb to cross an alley in Back Bay and the wind lifted me a couple of feet off the ground! I just floated there for a few seconds, then softly touched down. BTW the Bela Fleck fans might like to check out Tony Trischka, as well, especially his earlier stuff, where he mixed bluegrass with jazz and Middle Eastern sounds. I once saw Tony, Bela, and Bill Keith (originator of the modern "Keith style" of banjo playing) in concert together, several years ago. Every banjo picker in New England was crammed into this small club in Cambridge. Tony started his set with a blazing piece called "Sherman's March to the Sea". Unbelievable.
