So, are Chris and I the only ones who will be around for the holidays? Everyone seems to be leaving town, going on vacation, in general, saying bye-o till sometime in January. Well, Happy Holidays to those who are waving goodbye, but I'll be here, I'll be Ecto and I hope there'll be some other Ectophile folks around to help me keep the fuzzy blue warmth going till everyone else gets back. A thread to work on for those of us who are sticking by our computers... this request comes directly from the Hapster herself. She asked me to pass along a request to find out what song from the 1st4 could you not live without her doing in concert? She wants to please all who might see her, and, if you're out there in the audience, she wants to make sure she performs a song that you requested. Requests in advance...is this cool or what? Warpaint's taken care of, pretty much, but she and the band will have to rehearse the 1st4 songs specifically chosen. I mean, if someone at the concert were to yell out a request, and it's a song they haven't rehearsed, it's unlikely it will get played. Remember, most of the band is new and *none* (not even Kevin) played with Happy during the recordings of the 1st4's songs. She was all alone. If you are familiar with the 1st4, and would walk away from the concert totally dejected and muttering to yourself "she didn't play 'The Wretches Gone Awry' oh why oh why didn't she?" then tell me about it before it happens. Any song. Now, I can't *promise* you here and now that it's guaranteed the song will get played, but the chances of it being played will have been dramatically increased by your pre-request. I had 3 really nice phone conversations last night. One was the call from Happy with the above request for Ectophiles favorite early songs. We didn't get to talk very long, but it's always a pleasure speaking to her. Angelos, Klaus and Claudia called and it was *very* nice hearing their voices! With Chris and I on 2 telephones here and Angelos and Klaus and Claudia on 2 telephones there it was a bit disorienting at times, but so much fun...it was an extremely *nice* suprise! We chatted about lots of different things, including the HGP (hurry, hurry, hurry) and how wonderful (and addictive) the net is :-). Speaking of HGP, we were gone all day today (Saturday) and when we got home found Kiri's tape waiting, plus 2 yellow slips to go pick up 4 packages at the Post Office. I'll have to do it Monday. One was an Express Mail (Greg, was that you? Sorry you spent extra and we weren't here to receive it). Jessica, thanks for the wonderful ascii Christmas card! It was beautiful! Pass on my thanks to the artist, please. Ooh, you're so lucky, I haven't received H&K's card yet. My suspicions were right though. I hated to spoil a suprise like that, but thought it was the only way I'd get everyone to send their address in to me so fast. Vishal, you can assure your friend that all the voices are Happy's voices. She may process in a small way, but nothing to do with making the voice higher or lower. Do you have the 1st4? Wait till your friend hears a song like "Crystal Orb" or "Till the Dawn Breaks" !! She *does* have an amazing range! Klaus and Claudia, thanks for your posts! Claudia, I'm glad you liked my chains. That was fun to think about. I'm glad you're having such a great time in Boston. I wish I lived there, and could meet you both, and all the other Boston Ectophiles. Gee, I want to meet *all* the Ectophiles everywhere! Greg, I think it was, mentioned a Happy fan convention. I just know it will happen someday! Mitch, the Dave Barry posting was halarious! We're long-time DB fans, but missed that particular Gift-Guide. Jorn sends them to us from clari-net, but that one hasn't come through yet. Alan, I'm *so* glad to hear you have the 1st4 now, and that you have fallen in love with them! Your list is wonderful. I know what you mean about "Ode" and how you feel. It's long been a favorite of mine too. So beautiful and ethereal. The lyrics are so inspiring. Last year, I sent a copy of Ecto to Kate. Knowing that she was very depressed, particularly about the deaths of Alan Murphy and Gary Hurst, I wrote out the lyrics to "Ode" and included it in the letter I sent. I don't know if she ever got it, but if she did, I do hope she was moved by the song, and perhaps, comforted a bit. That's probably a very presumptious thing for me to say, on behalf of Happy and for myself, but I still have my hopes that she liked it. Alan, please continue posting about your reactions. I *LOVE* reactions! Vishal and woj, thank you for your Happy stories concerning your friends. Perhaps you would post what you sent me in e-mail, Vishal. It was a great story. More later... Vickie ps, nothing to do with Happy or Ecto, but, the third phone call was... I spent about 4 hours talking to my son. It was his 18th birthday. Yay! I should feel old but I don't. I love talking to him, he's so interesting and articulate. He dropped a few fascinating bombshells tonight...He's been accepted at KU in Lawrence, Kansas (I'm still hoping he'll transfer to Northwestern though), he's become a literature fiend and wants to double major in literature and journalism, with a goal of being a college professor. (This is amazing, but not suprising to me, because his area of expertise is math, he loves it in all its forms and gets straight A's without any effort, yet he's never been interested in a career that had anything having to do with math) and he's decided he doesn't believe in God, but wants to read all the major books of religion so he can be knowledgable about and discuss them. Wow! It was a *fantastic* conversation! I fully support him in whatever he wants to do, and his belief system. He's very smart, and I'm extremely proud of him. I know I don't talk about him that much, but I wanted to say that I'm one happy mama! I've told Adrian all about the net, and, unfortunately, where he lives now, the cost would be prohibitive for him to be on it. Well, hopefully he'll have no trouble at all gaining an account when he goes to college, and will be part of all this. Well, maybe not Ecto or Love-Hounds, he's not into Happy or Kate (yet :-) ) but you never know. ======================================================================== From: foster@magnum.convex.com (Harry Foster) Subject: Re: Happy Holidaze & such Date: Sun, 22 Dec 91 9:17:57 CST Hairy here ... > > A thread to work on for those of us who are sticking by our computers... > this request comes directly from the Hapster herself. She'd have to do "Ecto", unquestionably, and I would love to see her perform "The Perfect Irony", and "I Am a Legend", and "Oh the Drears", and ... Happy Winter Solstice to everyone! I'll be here ... Date: Sun, 22 Dec 91 11:30:14 EST Hi, Lots of holiday greetings to all of you leaving to go somewhere! I will be around Boston (except for three days I plan to spend in Vermont) so I will be in ecto! Last Friday and Saturday were ectodays. I met Klaus and Claudia and we had a very nice time (I did!) and we talked to Vickie'n'Chris on the phone (that was great too, though as Vickie mentioned 4 people talking at the same time is quite disorienting)!! I also received Happy's Holiday card which was avery pleasant surprise!!! VIckie, you mean Happy won;t do a 5 hour concert playing EVERYTHING??? :-) Add the following 4 songs to my request list: Poetic Justice/Til the dawn breaks/Possessed/Off from out from under me/ Oh the drears (that's 5 I know...) I can't wait to hear them live!! My main concern is how will it be possible to miss a Happy concert, if she will adjust the songs to satisfy fans at different places? Vickie, I am serious. We should take a vacation and become Happy-heads!! ANYWAY, it was great meeting/talking to the fellow ectophiles! Happy Holidays! Processing? What's that? ;-) re: "Small Blue Thing" No, no, no! That's *not* SV's best song! I'm not sure she *has* a best song, but her entire first album counts as a best song as far as I'm concerned. And DNA's remix of "Rusted Pipe" is superb. I never made a connection between "SBT" and "If So." I keep trying to compare them in my mind, but it's not working too well--probably because I'm blasting the RM/CITW single a friend just dropped off. Perhaps I'll try to play both of the songs later and see what I think. Oh well. Off to find productive things to do. BTW, I sewed my first stunt kite last night, and took it out today to try. It flew beautifully with no adjustments. Ecto significance? Yes, that's right, it's a blue kite. ;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C. Sorry you spent extra and we weren't here [...] hee, well, i'm glad our express mail package got there, anyway... :) hmmm, jessica and i will probably do another version of the song sometime in january, but this one came out pretty good, considering (it was a technological nightmare -- we tried the ecto-band technique of mailing reference tapes and solo parts, and it was a complete failure... i had to cut and paste each vocal phrase individually ;) ah well, what good is digital editing if you get it right the first time :) > Greg, I think it was, mentioned a Happy fan convention... yeh, KaTemas, watch out!!! ;) hmm, well, i dunno, as, mm, someone else posted recently, KaTemas was the most wonderful thing that happened this year... *next* year i'm inviting Happy (ack! she *would* have come last summer!!!!) and we will have live music (KaTe and Happy) and a projection tv/laser disc, and more food (cooked the day *before* this time), and mucho crash space, and we'll use my parent's *enormous* house at harvard, and anyone who *can* drive to boston darn well better :) mm, Vickie, sounds like you have good reason to be "one happy mama" :) as a former english lit/language major who went bad, i highly encourage Adrian's idea of becoming a professor -- teachers are rare and precious, and are only going to become more so in the next decade... *sigh* bed time, i think... footah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "be still (sh!) relax and let me have your hand" ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Dec 91 14:18:17 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu Subject: ectoptics well, it's that time of year that woj takes a vacation, but first, just wanted to rattle off a couple things... mitch: that winter solstice concert that you probably listened to was performed at the cathedral of st john the divine in new york city. i un- fortunately had to miss it - but i did catch a few bits of it on the radio. the paul winter consort performed, along with a myriad of others. what i heard was excellent and i'm kicking myself for not going (but then, i was picking up a certain ectophile at grand central station so it wasn't a complete loss). alan: while "the queen and the soldier" was the song that snared me into suzanne vega's web, "cracking", "freeze tag" and "small blue thing" are the three that make me go back again and again to her first album. i know that i've tried to explain "autumn music" here before, so i won't try a second time. i will say that those three songs are veritable epitomies of "autumn music". all: last saturday night (after a certain ectophile was safely sent on her way to florida), i saw a performance in manhattan by blue man group. the show was called "tubes" and was most interesting. imagine if you will, three men completely painted in blue paint. now imagine them on a stage surrounded by plastic vaccuum tubes doing everything from art critic-bashing to plain goofiness. some of the more interesting segments of the show included music performed on "pvc pipe organs" - essentially differing lengths of pvc pipe arranged vertically, played by tapping the end of the tube with hammer (or a shoe sole as they did); attacking both art and art critics and an assortment of other wierdness. the music was *fantastic* and i don't know if i really can describe it. the show was a heck of a lot of fun though so i encourage any and all to see them if they get the chance. they should be at the astor place theatre in manhattan for some time to come and have toured before (so will undoubtedly do it again). a most enjoyable time and they were *blue*! all again: have a wonderful holiday! woj - inhibition is the distance between thought and action - have a fish... ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Dec 91 15:12:37 EST From: David N.
