Hi Vickie-- Jeanne's had a few computer problems the last month or so...her own computer broke, she borrowed a laptop from a friend who decided that they wanted it back last night, and since she's graduating in a week or so, she'll be losing her account at UWM around the end of this year. She couldn't keep up with all the ecto stuff, so she unsubscribed to the list, and I've been forwarding here the most interesting stuff from time to time. We are trying to find her another public unix account in the Milwaukee area, but we haven't found anything yet.... I'm sure she'd like to be on Kevin's list....and if you have anything you need to get to her, you can send it to me and I'll forward it to her, either via one of the BBSs she's on, or a phone call or whatever....when she finds a new account, she'll undoubtedly resubscribe to Ecto. It has also occurred to me that the people at WBEZ with whom contact ought to be established also include Chris Heim, whose show on the station is a bit out of our domain (it deals with world music), but who also reviews records for the Chicago Tribune--including music such as Happy's. Still further has it occurred to me that the WBEZ people might know how to bring Happy to the attention of NPR, given that _Morning Edition_ has recently done features on the Austin Lounge Lizards and the Walkabouts. A couple of weekends ago, at my last visit to Pravda Records, I picked up a bunch of free music publications. These, it seems to me, should be kept in mind as outlets for possible reviews of Happy's records, or interviews with/ features about her, or both: Illinois Entertainer (does artist features; the rest are mostly into 2250 E. Devon, #150 record reviews, and also deal mostly with harder Des Plaines, IL 60018 rock than Happy does) Notes from the Underground Take the Money and Run Productions 1733 W. Le Moyne Chicago, Ill. 60622 Free Fest Monthly Persistant Productions Ltd. Box 777 Evanston, IL 60204 MOE c/o Bob Pomeroy Box 320753 Tampa, FL 33679 Factsheet Five c/o Bill Paulauskas Box 10 Woodhaven, N.Y. 11421 A somewhat different type of useful entity: Independent Music Network Box 3516 Carbondale, Ill. 62902 (Operates a mail/phone order catalog of alternative music, and--more import- antly--produces a syndicated radio show of it. Artists must be members of IMN--which costs between $20 and $65 a year--to be carried in either.) Also: I have given a couple of preliminary listens to Sarah McLachlan's album _Solace_. Mine is indeed a promo copy, as it turns out. It doesn't impress me as something that will, eons from now, be remembered as the engine of a paradigmatic revolution (ah there, Thomas Kuhn :-) ), but it definitely is good, solid acoustic folk rock. The promo version has no printed lyrics, and I haven't had time to review the recorded lyrics in detail; but they seem well within the standards set by Bush, Rhodes, Freelove, et al. A few numbers get into social comment, but nothing heavy-handed. The last track is a cover of Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," and arguably the weakest one on the album; but not bad, as these things go. Meredith has a lot to look forward to with this one. BTW: Both versions of Angelos's posting on Lou Reed' lyrics came through fine to this end. That's Newark Delaware, and it's prnounced new-ark, as an ark that is new not old. (unlike newark NJ which is more new-urk). Anyway, newark DE isn't so much further than newark NJ so off we went. It turned out, also, that Tribe was opening for the Psychadelic Furs. The club itself is a bit odd. It has at least 8 or 9 bars (none of which seem to serve anything particularly good, selection is very limited, and nothing is overly cheap) all around 3 rooms, in the 3rd and largest room is the stage. You can see about to the stage from the first room, but there is really very little space in the club where the view is very good. Although that very little space has a very *nice* view indeed. We were early enough to plant ourselves with stools right smack in the middle of the best spot, which happened to be right smack in front of the lighting controls. exactly in the center of the stage, a bit higher than it, and about 10 feet away. And due to the nature of the place, not more than about 3 people could be in front of us without being several feet lower. (and i'm taller than most people, anyway. so it was a *particularly excellent spot, both to see and be seen). The crowd seemed relatively conservative. We saw about 2 people dressed in punk style, everyone else was very collegiate-preppy-like. We talked to a bunch of people while on line and also inside before the show. We didn't encounter anyone who had ever heard of Tribe, and we didn't encounter many people who knew there would be an opening band. We did find one person who out the blue said "Oh and I'm a *huge* Kate Bush fan!". A nice surprise - if it weren't for kate, we probably wouldn't have been at the concert. (long story). Anyway, the concert started pretty much on time. Janet was in a sleeveless black velvet top and black velvet pants. flat black shoes. blackest hair, and lots of black around her eyes, and dark lipstick. She looked intriguing and sensuous, and when she looked angry she looked *angry* and when she looked hurt she looked *hurt*, and at all the same time, she seemed to be having a very good time. Terri was in a red velvet dress, with her bright red hair. She's got thin features and a bit of a stark fragile presence on stage. But she *bounces* at the keyboard, sings away, and displays no fragility other than *looking* thin and fragile physically. Eric, the guitar player, was wearing a "volcano suns" t-shirt. Some of the members of tribe were orginally in volcano suns, we assume eric is one of them. He's got shoulder length blonde slightly wavy hair. Greg (bass) was wearing nothing particularly noticeable. his brown somewhat curly hair was tied back, with bits of curls loose all around. it was evident throughout the show that he was *thouroughly* enjoying it. (well that was evident from all of them, but he smiled the most noticeably). David the drummer was *wild*, and for being stuck behind his drums in the corner of the stage, was not entirely unnoticeable. They played every song from "Abort" though in a random order. All of it, every single song, was excellent. They barely paused between songs, but towards the end had to stop for a moment to answer the calls from the crowd - several people were yelling "who are you?" "where can we get your album?" "what is your album?" etc.. Janet held up an LP of Abort, and said "We're _Tribe_". Really, there were underscores in her voice. she talks (and sings ;) that way :) We danced and sang along with _every_ song. A few people in the audience noticed and we heard some of them say "hey look, *they* know all the words" :). By the end of the set, a whole bunch of people were moving around a bit more, and nearly *everyone* was clapping and screaming. Before they came on stage, greg and I had talked with the girl doing lighting for Tribe on the tour. We had brought our cd's in with us, in the hopes that we might be able to get them signed, but we'd heard they usually leave right away and are very inaccessable. So after the set, we asked the lighting girl if she might bring our cd's backstage and have them autographed for us. She did so. She brought them back, each signed by each member of the band, and mine said "For Jessica, Thanx for singing along!!!" I was *completely* thrilled :):) They all signed in blue except Janet, not too surprisingly, signed in black. Greg drew a bicycle next to his name. we haven't figured out why yet :) So, the show went on to be the Psychadelic Furs show. I'm not really very familiar with their music. They sounded very good, the lighting (with lots of smoke) was interesting, and the lead singer has a stage presence all his own (he alternately thinks he's an airplane or a helicopter!). But I found most of the music to not be very interesting - it sounded good, as i said, but each song was one bit of nice sound until it was over. It didn't seem to go anywhere or do anything, and i didn't find many of the songs to be very distinguishable. But an occsional song was a bit more interesting than the others. We did stay for the whole show, even after one particularly unpleasant bit when the two guys who'd been standing next to us during the tribe part of the show, decided to leave, taking greg's leather jacket with them. Credit goes to the staff of the Stone Balloon for noticing my distress immediately and running down the street chasing the fellows. Unfortunately, they only caught one of them, and the other one had the jacket. The police came and got information from greg. The guy they caught wouldn't say *anything*. We don't know what the police can do and if we'll get the jacket back. Ah well, believe it or not, the evening on a whole was so fantastic, that that didn't manage to upset us too much. Anyway, it was a good thing we stayed through the rest of the Furs show. Towards the end, I noticed Eric and Terri standing far over to the right in the club. I ran over to speak to them and tell them what a wonderful show it was. Terri again thanked me for singing along :) She and Eric were both really neat in person. I didn't want to seem overly fan-ish, but we told them we'd come just to see them, and from MA and NJ all the way to DE, no less, and that we thought they had been just fabulous live. terri's fingernails are painted blue. (they are short practical fignernails of course, she plays keyboards. I tihnk she might bite them, anyway. in any case, they were dark metallic blue).I then noticed Greg was out too, and we went to say much the same things to him. He's a bit shyer than eric and terri. While I was getting some club soda, greg said to greg (greg of tribe said to greg bossert, the other of the "we" in this story) something abotu us singing along, and greg(b) said "yes, we especially felt we *had* to sing along with Joyride (one of greg(t)'s songs) just to show we _could_, as we spent some time figuring out the "haven't got a lot say have you have you..." section", and greg(t) said "yeah! and it took us a lot of practice to be able to do it in one breath!" (Though honestly, I don't ithnk they do it one breath, you can breathe just before the second to last line. :) But then, the Psychadelic Furs show was nearing its end, so they left very quickly. We never did see Janet or David. They're continuing to tour with the Furs, though I tihnk some of the shows may be their own shows. At the very least, they are playing two new year's eve shows in Boston. A list of cities and dates was already posted so i won't repeat it. If you're having trouble finding out *where* in the city they are playing, call Tribe's management, RPM Music Productions in new york city. (area code 212). I no longer have the number or I'd include it. They have the locations nad phone numbers of the clubs where Tribe will be playing. (their full address is: RPM Music Productions, Inc. 101 W. 55th Street NY, NY. Only a block from my favorite restaurant.) MTV's 120 Minutes show is likely to play the video for Joyride. It wasn't played this past sunday, but I'll be taping again this sunday - the lighting girl mentioned 120 Minutes.. Oh, we heard one guy at a bar say "Well Tribe was *much* better than the Psychadelic Furs!". :) It was truly a great show. I encourage people to catch them if they can. jessica ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
