I don't think I could get into one of those "what is alternative music" arguments again... I'll have to just capitulate on that point. It is not easy to define exactly what is alternative and what is not. But my last msg was badly phrased, and left lots of holes for people to shoot right though, so since doug has already started, I thought I'd patch up a couple of them. > Rock 'n' roll has always ridden a cycle varying from being part of the > mainstream to attacking it. Elvis Presley was attacked viciously for his > music and sexually suggestive live shows. The Beatles were equally > attacked for their raucous music and long hair, even back in their early > years (1964-65). The punk/new age movement of the late Seventies was > equally attacked for their colored hair, pierced noises, and wild shows. > Personally, I haven't seen the same reaction to today's 'alternative' > music. If they're attacking the mainstream they certainly aren't doing a > good job of it. Ok you brought up two issues here... First of all, the mainstream attacking the people who have appeared to 'fall off' of the mainstream due to their outrageous media-manipulating and fame-questing antics, and the other issue is the musicians speaking out against the mainstream. You seem to link the two together as if to imply that if one is attacking the other, than a counter attack should entail, if the attack was effective. I don't see the connection myself. I mean, the heavy metal musicians (and I use that term loosely) jump at any chance at having their pictures taken while they are screaming their heads off, wearing ugly makeup, and hands dripping with chicken blood. They love this attention, and welcome any "bad press" they get as a result, because this makes them famous, and sells records. And while you cite examples of Elvis and Beatles as being groups that were off of the beaten path, they are what I'd call 'mainstream' music. Zillions of people listen to it, the musicians are multi-millionires because of their musical careers, and so forth. > The attack is > more from heavy metal and rap. All of these groups which so threatened the > mainstream at one time, eventually moved in and became the mainstream. Exactly. But now, rappers and heavy-metalers, in my opinion, see an opening in a market and capitalize on it. These people aren't inspired to put out music for the sake of putting out good music; they want to make money. That's why they are so famous now. The pioneer music in these two genres aren't even listened to anymore (I think). However, to be honest, some 'alternative' musicians are guilty of the same offence; putting out stuff which imitates the style of someone else who is more or less relatively successful. However, I find that heavy metal music is blatant in it's self-promotion, which is why I can't stand it. Since I know nothing about rap music, I can't say something similar about it, but my guess is that this statement also holds true with the rappers. I can't argue any of the other points in your message, I'm afraid. I did phrase a few paragraphs which addressed them, but when I read them again, they sounded too pompus and presumptuous, so I removed them. Self-censorship at its worst. sigh. Two or three years ago, they were probably the most adventurous station in the Denver area. A year ago, they slipped a bit. Now they've completely fallen off the wagon. I'm not a radio person, so I don't know the official name for their current format, 'soft rock' probably fits. They played Kenny Loggins, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Hornsby, Joni Mitchell, etc. It'd be nice if Happy could slip into such a station. However, the best bet in the Denver area is definitely KTCL. The Denver radio market is cut-throat, and station formats change all the time. Be this as it may, I suppose that we're at parity with such other products and services as Powdermilk Biscuits, Bertha's Kitty Boutique, Guy's Shoes, Fisher's Coffee, and Staten Island Salad Dressing in terms of what we can afford in creative work. I submit that we could economize in this area, at least with regard to the Chicago market, by advertising exclusively on WFMT, which has just reasserted its commitment to live, announcer-read commercials. (It would also assure us an upmarket audience.) If the posited tour by Happy includes a Chicago club date, this would be the perfect time peg to plug her music to a number of stations here. The two major college stations, WNUR and WHPK, are obvious choices, as would be WXRT. (I assume Vickie has WZRD covered already.) WCBR also would be worth contac- ting. At least some of Happy's songs would fit in well with _The Midnight Special on WFMT (rotating hosts: Ray Nordstrand, Norm Pellegrini and Rich Warren). WBEZ doesn't have any shows specifically about this kind of music, but they do have two shows on the arts and entertainment in general: _Backstage Pass_ (host: Karl T. Wright), and _Artistic License_ (co-hosts: Neil Tesser and Victoria Lautman). Interviews or other coverage are theor- etically possible on either or both of these; _AL_ also has live performances, which Happy could theoretically do. As for shopping around for Chicago clubs: No Exit would also, I think, be a good possibility. There are some other folk clubs which might be more receptive than some of the rock clubs to the somewhat quieter kind of music that Happy tends to do. I wasn't aware that the release date for Sarah McLachlan's album was so far off. The used copy I got at Pravda must have been a promo (I still haven't gotten around to unpacking that batch). I ought to listen to this one soon, and put my impressions on the record (nothing like scooping Rolling Stone, etc. to put ecto on the map). Who can I put for Best Country (Blah - no offense to any country fans but I cannot stand country) - I was thinking Bonnie Raitt, does she qualify as country? Also I need artists for the Worst of Questions, I was thinking Hammer and Paula Adbul <- No matter how hard they try they just can't sing. I think I entered Happy for at least three entries, and Mouth Music for the best band. The toughy is best comeback...there were a lot of good albums that were late in coming i.e. Siouxsie et.al., but I can't think of any REAL comebacks. Any ideas? As for Happy infiltrating the Chicago area. Definitely hit XRT, Northwestern's station (Mitch might have mentioned this already, Im not sure of their call letters), my high schools station WNTH is 'very' alternative, and I think they might play Happy (heck they played a demo from my neighbours band). The "Bear" CBR if it still exists would definitely play Happy. As for clubs, there are many - I wouldnt mind seeing Happy where we went to see Mouth Music - don't ask me what it's called I don't remember, vickie? It was small, but I think it would make Happy's music more personal...hmm that just doesnt sound right! As for a Warm Blue Fuzzy drink....Ecto Cooler Hi-C is a lovely (gag) shade of green - it has a terrific bite, im wondering what kind of alcohol you could add to make it blue - if that's even possible!
