She had us out in the isles for the faster songs, and played for 3 encores. She's traveling with most of the same people she recorded The Sweetest Illusion with (11 people in her band in all), so even the more complex numbers came off very well. Anyway, I went home horse from screaming (: If you like Basia and haven't yet picked up The Sweetest Illusion, it's highly reccomended. There were 14 of us, from as far away as Baltimore, Dallas, San Diego, others within driving distance. We met at 2pm at Neale's great apt. in Vancouver (a city I really like) and hung out listening to BTC and talking and meeting each other (six of us eventually at the apt). We split up to go claim the beach site (Locarno) and find tables and hang the Ecto signs. A previous group abandoned their site, giving us a table, and soon we claimed another one. About 6:30 we were all there, hanging out, listening to tapes of everything BUT BTC (because I had forgotten to bring a patch cord that could hook up the CD player to the boombox, which just did tapes). As it started getting dark we tore down and, being undecided where to go next, we went back to Neale's to figure it out, but wound up partying there the rest of the evening. Neale signed us onto #ecto (which I had never seen) and many of us took turns chatting with the people where on line that night (a lot). We broke up about 12:30 am. It was a highly successful gathering by my reckoning. If I had any complaints it was that I felt so old--everyone was from 15 to 30 years younger than me. I have skipped it in most of I heartily disagree. In fact, imo, Tivoli is far and away the *most* interesting and *best* song on BTC. It is gorgeous and beautiful. It is probably the most beautiful song Happy has written to date. And to me it is nothing at all like Temporary and Eternal. I think Tivoli moves Happy into a different domain than where she normally works which is great. Listening to the rest of the CD I feel she is creeping, slowly and surely, closer to New Age and mainstream, and losing some of her edge and what distinguishes her. I do like Collective Heart. Many of the other songs are still a blur for me but I assume on repeated listens they will clarify. Nevertheless, the entire orchestration, lyrics and feel to Tivoli rank it easily my favorite song on BTC so far. I guess I wish Happy would move in a different direction, musically. I still claim that her last brilliant album, consistency-wise, was Ecto. Her voice on Hold On sounds more like Kate than it ever has. It's all a matter of taste, I guess, which is something that is subjective. Nowadays I don't listen to much ethereal stuff, actually I don't listen to *any* ethereal stuff at all, so 'Just like Tivoli' stood out as being the only song that I couldn't enjoy. And I don't think it's a different domain or a new direction. To me it epitomizes the only thing Happy does that I dislike. Of course it doesn't surprise me that you like it. I am sure many others like it too. It's just not what *I* listen to, Happy or not. > Listening to the rest of the CD I feel she is creeping, slowly and surely, >closer to New Age and mainstream, and losing some of her edge and >what distinguishes her. Huh?! See? I think the rest of the album is what takes the pieces that Happy has been collecting all these years and glues them together in a wonderfully creative way to make songs that are memorable, uplifting, and overall cool, without compromising her integrity at all. I don't see how you can call any songs on the album 'New Age'. If there's one song I would call 'New Age', that would be JLT. >I will say that Milla is what Happy Rhodes' next album should have been. NOOOOOOOOOO! Milla's album is good, but IMHO loses a lot of its appeal because of the production. I would have liked a rawer Milla, just like in her Conan O'Brien performance. I would love to see Happy's talents showing their harder edge. This is why I am very pleased by the roaring electric guitars in some songs. Angelos PS. Add 'Omar' and 'Down, Down' to the list of excellent songs on BTC. PPS. The album also has some wonderful tribal-like chants. I think that 'Glory' is what Bowie was after in his BTWN days. I would love to hear him do a duet with Happy covering it. ======================================================================== From: JWWARREN@aol.com Date: Mon, 29 Aug 94 15:30:03 EDT Subject: Sinead I heard "Fire on Babylon" once on the radio, and though I like to listen to things a few times before forming an opinion, I thought on first listen it sounded quite good. By all reports, her new album is going to be a monster. I'm looking forward to hearing her cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies." A question, is her new single avail. on import cd? I've seen the domestic, but sometimes like to get the import so I held off. Anyone seen such an item in the U.S. yet? Also, re: Sinead, for you fans. She appears on the new Manu Dibango, Wakafrika album. This review I posted on the Peter Gabriel list but thought I'd pass it along to ya'll: I picked up Manu Dibango's new album, Wakafrica, last night at Tower. Went home, implemented a couple mood enhancers, and listened to this excellent new CD. This album has Crossover written all over it, which I guess is good and bad. In other words, nothing on it to offend anyone, just great African rock and jive. The cast of featured guests is certainly stellar: Peter Gabriel, Sinead O'Connor, Youssou N'Dour,Manu Katche, Ladysmith Black Mombazo, Geoffrey Oryema, Salif Keita, Ray Lema and Ray Phiri (of Graceland fame), Angelique Kidjo, Papa Wemba, King Sunny Ade, Toure Kunda. Of special interest to Gabriel fans will be, of course, Dibango's excellent cover of Biko. Turns Gabriel's dirge into a fairly upbeat, rolicking shuffle, made somber only by the message of the lyrics. Gabriel is featured quite prominately, his vocals are quite clear and at times it sounds as if they may have been lifted direct from the original vocal tracks, but I am pretty sure I heard some different nuances (I only gave it one listen so far). He is listed on keyboards as well, though of course its hard to distinguish his contribution here. The rest of the album though, seems very catchy. Sinead can't really be heard on Biko, but on Emma and Lady you can definitely catch her in the background, and on Homeless (from the Graceland album) she has some solo lines. (I think Sinead's new album is going to surprise some people). Over all, a highly accessible album that's nevertheless full of talent. PS: Manu Dibango will be appearing at the San DIego Street Scene, two days of music Sept. 9 and 10. Over 70 bands in all. (Unfortunately, no confirmation that PG will be joining Dibango as special guest. ;-) ). Philly is Happyland, I guess. I'm very glad to have the new album, and I like a lot of the production, but there are some moments of which I'm not entirely enamored. By the way, I think the front cover is fairly cool. Interesting that so many other people seem not to like it. Regarding Happyvangelizing: last week I loaned a copy of _RhodeSongs_ to the guy who owns one of my favorite CD stores (Rebel Rebel on Bleecker St in NYC). He kept asking me if I got some kind of financial kickback from this advertising I was doing for Happy. I just told him that I liked her, and was intent on spreading her work around. The following week, when I went back, he told me that he tried to like it, but that there was just too much stuff out there (so he couldn't be into everything, right?). He acted very very careful about not hurting my feelings, and asked "she's not your sister or anything, is she?" (he thinks I kind of look like her, must be my nose) I told him I was in no way offended, and that I was pleased that he had taken the time to listen. My point in bringing all this up is that I found it strange that he should have difficulty accepting that I was only interested in furthering Happy's career. Apparently, most people don't help other people unless it reaps some kind of personal gain. Oops, guess I had those rose-colored glasses on again, and forgot to see the world for the cynical paradise it really is. :-) Faves on BTC include: "If I Ever See The Girl Again," "You Never Told Me," "Down Down," "Building The Colossus" (except for the stronger underwear line, which I sometimes like, and sometimes detest) and "Omar." Of course, I've only listened to it three or four times, so this list is subject to change. P.S. In case anyone is so inclined, I very much enjoy the new Jah Wobble album (_Take Me To God_). The song "The Sun Does Rise" (featuring the singer from the Cranberries [sorry, eludes me for the moment]) is way cool! Take this as a recommendation. -Sam ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 29 Aug 1994 16:21:31 CDT From: Subject: Baudy songs and backslash ballads, or: DEC us all with Boston Charlie Paul, our afficianado of PDP11's, was way ahead of me when he came up with the same conclusion a day earlier--that the _faux_ directory path on the BTC spine was meant to appeal to both Unix and MS-DOS users. The limitations of the latter WRT file naming brought to mind the datum that the first software to be called DOS was a mainframe operating system in the 60's, and that IBM users of the period were fond of saying that the initials stood for "Dumb Operating System." The OS releases that eventually outmoded it would appear to give mixed results in the quest for a way out of the current crisis: In MVS one could call it BUILDING.THE.COLOSSUS , at least for a disk file; while in CMS one has to settle for BUILDING COLOSSUS :-). (A tape file in either system would be called BUILDING.COLOSSUS . One begins to see why mainframes have been in eclipse these days :-). ) Sounds like a good time was had by all in Cascadia. Clearly the approach to life out there is more laid-back--had it gone that late in a Chicago park, it would no doubt have been raided for making noise after closing time, or what- ever else the cops could dream up. The sight of Brian's .sig cow reminded me of a coffee-table book on the pacific northwest I saw on a remainder table some time ago. It had a picture of a barn somewhere in Oregon, with essentially the same concept--down to and including the caption balloon. But I can't remember if it was the cow that was done up in red, or the barn wall. In any case, synchronicity lives :-). Mike is not alone--noplace around here seems to have Rebecca Pidgeon either. Condolences to Meredith--you're not the first to have been done out of stuff like this by the proverbial Arms of Morpheus. Somehow, I find little consola- tion in the knowledge that I'm no longer the only one on this list to whom this has avowedly happened :-). So forgive me if this is old news. I'm sure there is some new news in it. :-) I like reading all the comments about "Building the Colossus" -- it sure wets my appetite. We'll have to wait a while here I'm afraid, the cd has been ordered in our recordshop... But fortunately I've just bought "Ecto" and "Warpaint" last week so I've got some new Happy stuff to listen to anyway. :) But I wanted to react to some older messages. First about alt.music.ecto. Somebody (sorry, forgot who) wondered whether it had reached Germany. Well, it did make it to the Netherlands, so it's getting close, but it could be that your site doesn't carry all Newsgroups. We for example skip alt. groups in general, but it does have advantages to work for the automation department and being an "assistant Newsmanager" :) -- I have arranged alt.music.ecto and alt.music.alternative.female for myself, amongst others. It's a different story to keep News up and running though... :( Then about Toni Childs. I read some rather disappointed messages about negative reviews for her latest cd. I'm not really familiar with her music, I've only heard some songs from her first two albums and a radio concert, and I'm still not sure what I think of her voice. But I read the following review in a Dutch feminist magazine the other day, and I thought I would try to translate it and post it to cheer you (whoever you are) up. Sorry for any errors in the language... This is from Opzij, september 1994 (the latest issue). SONGS FROM THE WOMB You have to get used to her voice. Not because Toni Childs screams, gargles or cuts capers, but because the sound is so round and raw. She digs it from the deep, where the borderline between strain and force fades. On her first albums "Union" and "House of Hope" she couldn't always find the right balance, but on the new CD "The Woman's Boat" the singer is the master over her voice. Toni Childs (38) is certainly no 'beautysinger', but she controls the nuances of emotions and knows how to handle them honest. Recorded with Indian and African musicians the album does undeniably breathe an exotic atmosphere. The music on "This Woman's Boat" serves the character of the songs, as a good scene is a presence that speaks for itself. That organic combination of voice and music is also the reason for "This Woman's Boat" becoming such an intriguing album, because every trace of bluntness, glamour or opportunism would have spoiled the whole concept. Toni Childs namely had the insolence to dedicate her songs to 'the feminine spirit in all living things on earth', in a cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. The first song starts literally in the womb, where the unborn child wonders: "What will I do in this world?" In the songs that follow, it's in turn the mother or the child speaking and fears, love, pain and grieve pass in review. The death of the mother in the end leads anew to life, where the first song is repeated. The theme of "The Woman's Boat" can be taken as a metaphor: new insights develop from old views, to bring the world (m/f) better in balance sacrifices need to be made. But even without philosophyzing Toni Childs has enriched us with a beautiful image: the woman as the gate between life and death. (end of quote) Well, that's all for now. Glad to see they're still around. D^2 (still waiting for BtC to hit the local stores... in the meantime I'll have to get by with _Harbinger_ by Paula Cole (which I really like) and _Eve_ by Over The Rhine (which I'm just warming up to)) ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 29 Aug 1994 21:50:00 -0400 (EDT) From: THE OLIVE-LOAF VIGILANTE Subject: Huh? Hi! mjm, you can't be serious. _The Divine Comedy_ is the album Happy should've made??? The songs Happy wrote when she was Milla's age were orders of magnitude better than the ones Ms. Jovovichhas come up with so far (and don't get me wrong, I enjoy Milla's music quite a lot, and look forward to following her career in the years to come), and Happy's 10 years older than that now, with 6 more albums under her belt. If she had produced something on a level of _TDC_, it would have been a tragic step backward in the wrong direction. I agree with Angelos -- the only song on _BTC_ even approaching New Age-iness is "Just Like Tivoli", and as New Age, it's pretty lame at that. Listen to the disc a few more times, and call me in the morning, okay? :) In other news, some new music has crossed our threshold that I'd like to comment on here: Sheila Chandra, _The Zen Kiss_ Wow. I'd heard quite a few tracks from this on the radio already, but the first listen of the album as a whole utterly blew me away. I'm commanding my parents to get themselves a copy of this posthaste, as I'm sure it will bowl them over too... if you're deeply impressed by the power of the human voice, specifically the female voice, your life is not complete without this album. Period. Katell Keineg, _O Seasons O Castles_ Another one I'd heard a lot of on the radio. woj brought it home the other day, and it's interesting. Paula Cole meets Rainbirds (circa _Call Me Easy..._) in Eire. A couple songs sound like they felff _Harbinger_, others like they got nixed from _Call Me Easy..._. If you like either Cole or Katharina Franck's voice or both, this one is for you. There's been more new acquisitions, but haven't had time to listen to them yet. :( I *really* need a CD player in my car! (That will hopefully happen soon.) Then I'll have 3 hours of quality listening during driving to and from work each day... Finally, I'd like to publicly announce that Tamar is waffling over whether or not she should go see Sarah McLachlan in NYC in a few weeks. She has just been informed that she no longer has an excuse, so it's time for peer pressure. BtC is not "commercial" to me. It's quisessentially Happy, the continuation of themes begun on Rhodes I. It is one of the most tuneful albums she's done, and she's always been strong on melody (well, most of the time!), and there is even a ballad, but it's all so darn Good that I can't see sullying it with Mainstream. She's not Janet Jackson, no sir. And she's not Ray Lynch either. She's our Happy, and BtC is an amazing feat! -bobthepredictable ======================================================================== From: Robert Lovejoy Date: Mon, 29 Aug 1994 22:05:46 -0400 Subject: Spoke to Susanne... For those more desparate, you can fax AG at (914) 679-4760, but at least try your record stores first! SW is trying very hard to make this album as available as possible, and if demand is created supply follows! Anthony, they are working on your question! Hope to have more news shortly! Hi, I know there are some Psychowelder fans here, and if there are any in the Kansas City area, you have a chance to see them live one last time (they've been broken up for months now). Starting Thursday is the Kansas City Spirit Festival, a yearly musical festival held at the Liberty Memorial. Psychowelders are getting back together for a one-off reunion concert at the Laser Rock Theater, Thursday (9/1) starting at 9:00pm. I believe the concert is $5.00 (?). Chris is going down there to do the "psychovideo" (an old tradition) for the band. The lineup is the same as on the _Inertia_ CD: Rhondda Francis-vocals Eric George-bass Scott Seitz-guitars Ken Norvell-Drums Rhondda's husband, the Not Very Right Reverend Dwight Frizzell, will be performing in his own amazing band. BCR (stands for Black Crack Review, but nobody ever calls them that) will be performing that same night at 6:30pm on the Reggae Stage. Don't miss the band that is a cross between Boiled In Lead and They Might Be Giants and that was cited by Nurse With Wound as a major influence! Sorry that those not in the KC area will miss this. I'm hoping it will be audio and videotaped. Those who missed the short-lived Psychowelders era can hear them on certain tapes of the TDS (write to Doug for details). Wrt the spine of BTC facing the wrong way...I always thought that that's why those ends are almost always perforated. I fixed mine in 2 minutes by taking the CD case apart, folding that end back and forth (just because it's perforated doesn't mean it always tears cleanly), tearing it off, turning it around and securing it with tiny strips of double- sided sticky tape. Viola! Now it fits in with the others. Are there any Amigaheads who can point me to a Share/Freeware database that I can use to keep track of my CDs/LPs/cassettes? I started typing them into a text program but if I'm going to do a lot of typing, I should probably do it directly into a database, just in case the text program can't be carried over later. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the *HUGS* and welcome backs! Date: Tue, 30 Aug 1994 13:56:11 +1000 (EST) Thanks Bob for relaying the Susanne info. I must tell you that I've tried the places in Melbourne most likely to be able to get it (Readings in Carlton can't, Gaslight can't, Virgin megastore can't (haven't heard of her!)). Some of those places have heard of Happy, but only up to and including RhodeSongs and they can't (won't?) order it until they know about it. I'll keep trying, but I'll start feeling some withdrawal symptoms if it doesn't improve soon ... ;) Let me join the chorus in welcoming our intrepid ectoma, WELCOME BACK VICKIE! *HUG* It's nice to see some familiar faces popping up on the gabriel list lately, Vickie and Ilka amongst them :). And I really love 'When I was a Boy' by Jane Siberry. It (along with Under The Pink) are my current car fodder. Now if only I could hear them through the engine noise ... I managed to find a copy of the Australian Eat the Music CDsingle. It had 4 tracks including 'You Want Alchemy' and the Red Shoes dance mix. It also, to my pleasant surprise, has a scratch'n'sniff on the cover that's supposed to smell like watermelon or something. It doesn't really, but it's definitely something other than normal cardboard/printing smell :). Dum de dum. I decided to "unlurk" long enough to post this :) There's a Sarah McLachlan .S3M MOD located on ftp.eng.ufl.edu /pub/msdos/demos/music/artists/necros/possess.zip It's quite large (over 700K zipped). For those that don't know, MODs are computer music files with digitized instruments. .S3M files are those that were made with the Scream Tracker 3 mod editor. DMP (for DOS, ugh) is about the best S3M player around that I've tried. You can pick it up from wuarchive.wustl.edu under /pub/msdos_uploads/modplayers or something like that. I think you can also find it at ftp.uwp.edu under /pub/incoming/modplayers (or something like that). The program s3mod for linux (possibly for other UNIXes, I don't know) works pretty well, too. It can be picked up from somewhere under /pub/Linux on sunsite.unc.edu. If you have a sound card, you can probably play this file. Otherwise, you could attempt to use the PC Speaker option under DMP, but be surprised if you can hear anything through the fuzz. The Possession mod isn't very impressive, but it has the lyrics (which is why it's so large). But, hey, it's kind of neat, and all you Sarah freaks will probably want to pick it up. In other news, I picked up BtC the other day (didn't even know it was out yet...wow was that a pleasant surprise!), and I have to agree that it is terrific. And, yes the backwards spine is driving me crazy :) I don't see what the problem with the cover is, though. I thought it was quite impressive (although the DOS prompt thing was kinda cheesy). Oh, well...time to go lurk around some more :) Owen Magee omagee@gtlug.org ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
