(let's see if woj notices i stole that from him ;) I've been hearing more Happy on WFUV, so that wasn't just a one-shot occurrence. And each time she's been amply announced and touted, so she may do well to look into the possibility of a NYC gig when she "tours" -- there are places where she could play, if she didn't mind Joyous Lake she can deal with them. The more I listen to _BtC_, the more I realize this is by far Happy's best yet. No spoilers here, but I hereby encourage you all to pick it up as soon as you can, especially you lurkers who have only heard a few of Happy's songs or aren't sure if you want to dole out $$$ for this new one. Do it. You'll be glad you did! Anybody catch Tori on "Later"? I was quite disappointed. I hadn't seen the show since its Bob Costas days, when it was an hour long, had no studio audience, and featured the host and guest relaxing in easy chairs shooting the breeze for the entire hour. Now it's a half-hour, has a studio audience, and is hosted by an idiot who has incorporated a monologue and sketches that make Conan O'Brien look funny. Gack. I think Tori was on the show for no longer than she would have been had she been on Letterman and he'd deigned to talk with her after she performed her one song. :P Still, it was an amusing interview. Interesting how Tori evaded the love-life question, hm? And I had to laugh at Kinnear's attempts to get her to talk about her Sven The Viking days (they got on about reincarnation), and when she answered instead that she had been Bob in another life he was quite caught off guard, because I'm sure he'd evolved an entire line of questioning about her being a Viking in another life. So instead he asked her what she thought about NME having dubbed her a "24-carat froot loop". Tori took it well, I think. I was impressed. :) Some folks around here might be interested to learn that there is a new album out by Victoria Williams. It's called _Loose_, and it's on Mammoth. There is a full-page article on her in the current issue of Rolling Stone (the one with Trent baby on the cover), and it mentions that the next few months are going to bring no fewer than *4* new albums by her-- _Loose_, an album of children's tunes, a collection of Christmas songs (I think -- I was reading fast) and another album of new material, all of which were recorded in the last 4 years in between record contracts and hospital stays. I haven't seen the new one in stores yet, but I did pick up _Swing The Statue_ on CD last weekend, just to have. If anybody managed to tape E-Town last night with Sarah McLachlan on, please let me know. (It's on around here, but I didn't know to listen! Argh!) Methinks it was a nice idea that lost something in the translation to the either non-computer people (or Mac-heads) that designed the cover. And before any Mac-heads flame me back (as they are wont to do), I'm not making any value judgements on the machine, just that Mac-heads aren't familiar with a DOS command line. I'm assuming it's a DOS command line instead of a UNIX command line since it's a back-slash and not a forward slash. And if we're going to critique that command line, meth, we'd probably have to make it C:\HAPPYRHO.DES\BUILDING.COL because that's all we could put on a DOS command line (and spaces are definitely verboten). But if it was a UNIX command line, we _could_ say c:/happy_rhodes/building_the_colossus. It can be, and I thought I'd let everyone know how its done. First of all, if you don't know what undernet is, and want to try it out, from IRC perform a "/server Boston.MA.US.Undernet.Org 6667". There are FAQs available, and I'll be happy to forward them to you (mail me direct, not the whole ecto group). Once you're on undernet, just do your normal "/join #ecto". If a gate has already been established, you're all set to go. But what if you find the conference EMPTY? Fear not. Type "/invite Orac" and a gate will be established between EFnet #ecto and Undernet #ecto automagically. By the way, I suggest you perform a "/mode +t" to prevent Orac (Orac is a Bot) from constantly changing the topic of undernet #ecto. There are many undernet users who've never seen #ecto. By establishing a permanent presence there, we can hope to increase participation. Besides, the undernet admins are really great folks, and I for one want to see this alternative IRC server network thrive. Spoilers ahead! Thought One: Remember "Let Me Know, Love" from Volume II? "I want to be the person in my dreams / I'm finding it harder than it seems." "Building the Colossus" seems to be a continuation of that idea. Now the protaganist knows what she needs to do to be strong, and is willing to work at it, to build herself into that person. We have a shift from "...the person in my dreams" to "...there's an ideal person hiding, lurking, waiting inside of me." Personally, I'd say that Happy's known that the person is inside her, that the self-doubt has been gone, for a number of years. Still, I find this a fascinating song. Thought Two: All that said, am I the only person who finds "Dying" to be a characteristically UnHappy song? In the past, she's been all about strength, particularly drawing strength from within ("Baby Don't Go," "Ode," "No One Here," etc.) I was *amazed* to see "Dying" end with the protaganist giving up on herself, "knowing" that she can't rejoin the world by her own will: "But there is one thing that I know, I won't come out on my own / So pull or let me go.....and I'll stay safe within this, my tropical cocoon." The protaganist is actually putting the burden on someone else to draw her out, back into the world. In older material, this "someone else" would in fact be another aspect of her own personality, but I really don't see that as bein suggested here. Thoughts, anyone? I do find it wonderful that she mentioned Oxy again. But who is Eze, and what happened to Nitro? ;-) ----- I played BtC for my folks tonight. They loved it, as expected. Dad even recognized it as being Happy Rhodes, which impressed me (neither of them yet own any of her albums, though Rebecca is now insisting that I buy her a copy as soon as I see it in a store). ----- I don't have the slightest idea why Angelos doesn't care for "Just Like Tivoli". I think it's one of the loveliest pieces Happy has written. Admittedly, it's nothing like the heart-wrenchingly-beautiful pieces she's written, the ones that still freak me out because they're just so damned good, but it's definitely lovely. One of my favorites on the album, and one of the few I've caught myself singing or humming to myself as I wander around. For what it's worth, I *do* agree wtih Angelos about "Temporary and Eternal," which is the most boring song on _Equipoise_. But I can't make the same comparison between that and "Just Like Tivoli" which Angelos draws. ------ I definitely disagree with meth, who thinks this is Happy's best album. Yes, it's great, yes, I'm listening to it over and over again, and I like every song, and so on and so forth. But truth be told, I don't think I'll ever like anything as much as a lot of the early, sparser stuff from the 1st4. "Crystal Orbs," "Baby Don't Go," "No One Here," "Project 499," "Possessed," oh, god, the list just goes on forever. But I can't imagine not being impressed with whatever directions Happy turns toward. Of course, that's written by somebody who listened to a tape today containing both "Eat the Music" *and* the "Eat the Music" extended remix, and loved them both, and didn't think either was too long, and thought to himself how much he loved KaTe's output, even now, and fuck the other people who think she's not up to snuff. ;-) ------ WELCOME BACK, VICKIE! ------ Jeff |Jeffrey C. First, wrt the spine/title debate, at least be happy it's not printed upside down on both sides :) (You can flip it around instead of upside down; much more aesthetically pleasing.) Noone seems to have mentioned this, perhaps because it's trivial, but the actual TITLE of the album appears nowhere in the liner booklet (with the exception of the title track, of course.) I've always been partial to Happy's earlier albums, primarily because I feel I can identify with the lyrics, but BtC is almost an inspiration in a strange way. And in defense of "Just Like Tivoli", it takes more getting used too, but IMHO, is much better than "Temporary and Eternal!" I'm certainly glad I got BtC before H.S. starts next week; walkmans have been banned from study halls and buses. I suppose I'll have to survive the 11th grade w/o Happy (or at least wait until I get home :) (And thanks to everyone for bringing Happy to my attention. No, that honor goes to "I am a Legend." I cringe everytime I hear "poohoohoo on you." What was Happy thinking? As for the comparisons between "Temporary and Eternal" and "Just Like Tivoli," I will admit that I have been skipping "JLT" more often than not, but I like it better than "T&E." At least I have a vague recollection of what "JLT" sounds like, but "T&E" completely leaves my mind even after hearing it many, many times. Even now, I can't really remember what it sounds like. So, I guess "JLT" wins out in that regard. Jeff analyzed: > Remember "Let Me Know, Love" from Volume II? "I want to be the person in > my dreams / I'm finding it harder than it seems." BTW, the numbers in my post were the numbers of songs shown by that artist, not ratings. Don't suppose it's possible to get a schedule for VH1 off the net. Local TV listings don't list it and I don't have the patience to wade through it. Actually, I was a bit dissapointed Sarah's performance wasn't as good as her concert here. Not complaining, just wish the exposure for her had been better. /-\ |_ |= >< Alex R.
