In the town of Austin, in the state of Texas is where we will find Brian Bloom's connection with the real world. Everybody, I'd like to introduce you to Brian. Brian, everybody. Everybody, Brian. "Hi. I feel kind of gipped being cast as the megalo-maniacal evil genius type guy. That's not me at all. I'm a really nice guy. I work with computers. I have a girlfriend who loves me, Mindy. We live together. No kids, but three dogs. All around nice, sensitive male. I have a wide range in musical tastes. I'm not too picky, so I listen to Pink Floyd as well. (Sorry Brian. Cheap shot. Couldn't help myself ;) I like to dabble in a bit of magic. My friends and I get together every other weekend for an occult study group. Our mascot is a little golden cow statue that Mindy picked up at a flea market. Am I all that bad? I'll check out now. See you all later. Bye." Well, you have to understand that although this is what we consider to be the real world, that dream world we keep talking about is also real. The difference being, in the dream world, impossibilities aren't so impossible. The only limits are those of the imagination. The dream world is a product of the dreams and aspirations that we have in our world, but with a life of their own. When Brian of our world dreams of being a great sorceror, the Brian on the flipside is a great sorceror. The same thing is with Daniel, only that Daniel dreams a bit bigger. For some, the old cliche stands true. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." That is what happened in Brian's case. It's not his fault. He is unaware of what is really happening. He can learn to control the power he feeds to the dream version. Daniel has to make Brian see what's going on. Next: This was a short one. *applause* I will be posting again very soon, but time is limited. We will find out how Daniel will get to Austin if it kills me. See you later. This brought to mind an article in the latest issue of a Sunday supplement called _USA Weekend_, which extols the health benefits of fish in general and salmon in particular. Sounds like a healthy time prom- ises to be had by all :-). (Wonder how to work fish oil into the venerable ecto product list?) All this, in turn, started me to free-associating some more, and led me to the recovered memory of my last trip to New York. For better or worse, our friends out Cascadia way are probably at the wrong end of their nation for the salmon dish that the Carnegie Deli was serving at the time, with the very Canadian-sounding moniker of the Nova Scotia Breakfast Sandwich. I have mercifully forgotten what one of those things cost exactly, but I think it was at least $12 (which, it may be argued, is not far from the population average for midtown Manhattan, but still... :-) ). Even in New York, I'm sure it must be possible to get good old Lox and Bagels for under $12 a pop, particularly in 1986, when it all happened for me. It's just about U.S. Open time again. Wonder if the Carnegie will trade on the occasion by charging through the nose for an entree consisting of two bagels, lox optional, cream cheese extra, and marketed under the name of the DOUBLE BAGEL? :-) The BC/Northwest ecto community would appear to be getting the better deal on their fish oil fix :-). First off, I have a spare ticket to the Sarah McLachlan concert at Lisner Auditorium in DC on Friday, September 16th. Is anyone interested? :-) The cost is my cost: $27.25. E-mail me directly for more info. As a follow up to my original post upon joining Ecto a month or so ago, here are some updated comments. After originally liking Equipoise best, I subsequently got heavily into Warpaint - to the point of playing the title song over and over again! I'm better now! I still haven't been able to enjoy her earlier albums as much :-( I'm eagerly awaiting her new release, hoping it will continue the trend of the last two albums. I just have to be careful not to set my hopes so high that I'm disappointed! I also said before that I was disappointed in Fumbling toward Ecstasy. Scratch that - it's my current favorite! I'm ready for the concert now! Incidentally, it was a post here that led me to the knowledge that Sarah was coming to DC. I tried to get tickets before they went on sale - Lisner didn't even know about the concert and the promoter sounded suspicious when I called them! Anyway I watched for the announcement and then got busy at work on the day the tickets did go on sale and didn't call until about 11AM. So my tickets are in the 12th row, toward the side. Should be fairly nice though. Another post here (?) mentioned that the cable radio system 'DMX' was playing Happy and other Ecto-ish artists on its 'Folk Rock' channel (10 on my system). This is true! I've heard Happy twice and lots of others mentioned here as well as still others I hadn't heard of. Just a few of the artists played include Happy, Milla, Ani DeFranco, Shawn Colvin, and Natalie Merchant. I've been taking notes while listening and I'll post a list of the artists I liked with a little description of their music here in a few weeks. But my copy (autographed, of course) arrived in the mail yesterday. Ahhhhhhh. The album is a bit different, or maybe a lot different. It's very cool, though. It'll take lots of listens 'til I'm comfortable with Happy's current direction, but I definitely like it after 2.5 listens. Stand outs for now are "Dying" and "If I See the Girl Again". I also like the first track ("Hold Me"?) The band sounds great, Kevin's e-bowing is fabulous. I have to admit that some of the lyrics struck me as a bit...forced? Hmmm. I'm not sure how to describe it. Too prose-like, I guess. On the other hand, Happy is still Happy, and she writes incredibly evocative stuff. What the hell is the makeup that Happy's wearing on the cover?
