Sounds like Lisa Loeb in a whiny mood. It's almost certainly Edie Brickell (and the New Bohemians) from her first album, Shooting Rubberbands. Claudia and I found copies of BtC in our mailbox this morning! 8-D The reason for this, and our appearance in the thanks section of the booklet, is probably due to our translation of the "Godspeed ..." line (which I can't find anywhere on the album), as the other translators got their "thanks" as well and surely also found the disc in their mailbox. After two listens all I can say (except for "Thank You, Happy!") is that it sounds very good and sometimes quite different from the previous releases. I still have to figure out what that difference actually is. My first thought was that some of the songs sound more commercial, musicwise. Fortunately Happys voice stands out. I'm in a very pissed off mood, and had to wait two days before I could even write it up. Read with care. ==> Valerie As you know, on Thursday, I had an interview scheduled with Tori. Thank you to everyone who sent me questions...Unfortunately, the interview did not happen. Here is my story: The interview was scheduled at 5pm, so I leave work early at 4:30pm. After a mini-battle with New Mexico drivers, I arrive at 4:55pm. Perfect timing. I park, grab my notebook and tape recorder. Somewhere in all the mess is my pen. I walk over to the venue, and a person sorting t-shirts lets me in. I explain my situtaion, show her my press pass and wait. She returns from deep within the bowels of the theater and says, "Sorry. You'll have to wait until after the soundcheck. Come back in an hour." Can I wait inside? "No." Great. Fine. I walk outside to the ticket booth to see if the concert has sold out. "No." I start to walk away. "Are you a reporter?" I turn my head. "Your photographer is waiting inside. Come over here." Well, at least Ms. t-shirt-head is foiled again. I head inside, and meet Roxanne, my photographer. She tells me that it will be only 5 minutes, according to blond-haired-guy. She's never even heard Tori, so I warn her about how she straddles the piano bench. We wait...5:15...5:30....5:45...Gee, I hope we get in before 6....6:01....6:15...dark-haired-guy comes up. "Has anyone helped you?" "Yeah, we're here to interview and shoot Tori." "It will be 5 minutes....Oh, and you can't bring _that_ in with you," he says, pointing to my tape recorder. "I just want to get accurate quotes." "Get rid of it." I grumble to myself. I rarely use tape recorders, but figured it would be wise, since Tori tends to ramble on and spout really weird stuff. At this point, any excitement or nervousness I had over meeting Tori has vanished. We've been waiting for over an hour. Roxanne is threatening to leave, and starts making fun of dark-haired-guy. I'm going over my notes for the thousandth time, wondering what's up. I find out 15 minutes later, just as I get back from putting my tape recorder safely in another room. "You can go in now." Where? "In there," she says, pointing to the audience. I walk in, and I see Roxanne and a guy from a weekly freebie-paper taking photos, while Tori is talking...to an audience of radio contest winners! "I hear some of you are from Taos." "Yeah," go the hormonally-challenged fans. One asks where she lived, and she responds with almost an exact address. Another fan asks if she's been back there, and she says she misses it very much. I ask if the spirituality of the place got to her. She answers that "Taos spitting me out seven times a day had a lot of impact on me...I didn't find it restful....(but) I'm more alive there than anywhere else, being spit out everyday." I don't catch the rest of it because Mr. dark-haired-guy plops down behind me and whispers in my ear, "Thisis not a press conference, so stop asking questions. This is for the radio winners, not for you. If you ask another question, I will throw you out." I ask him if I will have an opportunity to ask questions later. "No! Now shut up." I'm really fucking pissedc, and Tori starts playing "Honey," segueing it into another song which I don't recognize, but includes the line, "Years might go by...Years may go by..." She finishes, people clap, and everyone is shooed out. I walk out "by the back door," demands dark-haired-asshole. He starts yelling at Roxanne for shooting the second song. It seems that she was only allowed to shoot the first song, although she was never told this. I try explaining that my editor had set up an interview, and I was never told I couldnt' ask questions. Roxanne stomps out, nearly crying. "Don't you ever dare shoot another show I'm working on," he yells after her. I explain my situation. To my luck, the dark-haired-guy is supposed to be my contact. He's calmer with me, because I'm calmer. But the message is the same. No, there's nothing he can do, and yes, I'm fucked. "Call your editor. They were obviously wrong." "Oh, I have to apologize. I know what happened. Sometimes the record company sets up interviews without leetting us know." Gee, thanks. And I'm the one who's caught up in this. I'm supposed to be on a backstage list. "There's no such thing." I walk off. By now they're letting concertgoers in, so I try to reach my editor. Great. Not only don't I have the interview, but my editor isn't around. I wait outside for her, but in vain. She either gets to the concert late. Instead, I see Tador and my friend Zenaida. I'm pissed, and about the last thing I want to do is watch a concert. My only options are to review it or to not write a story. I _hate_ concert reviews, because by the time they're printed, no one will be able to see it (except for on the Net). Not writing a story is not my style, so I vow to overcome my distaste and take notes of at least the set list during the concert. I'll get to that in the next note. Grrrr..... I don't blame Tori, although a lot of my anger has been directed toward her. It's really sad when musicians become so big that they have to surround themselves with such assholes, and have record companies scheduling interviews that aren't going to happen. Their behavior has turned me into one of those sharp-edged journalists that people like Tori complain about. Right now, I have no desire to interview her. I don't even have a desire to meet her. It angers me that I had to wait for more than 1 1/2 hours for an interview that wasn't going to happen, and if I ever had to write an article about her, it would be tough not to let this get in the way. As a fan, I appreciate and respect her music. Although I had a horrible time at the concert. Part of that was what had happened, part was that she didn't do a very good show. I've confirmed that with my friends, so it's not just my anger. But I'll get to the concert in my next post. Thank you to everyone who sent me questions. I wish I could have asked them. They were interesting, and definitely ones she hasn't ever heard. ==> Valerie ======================================================================== From: Robert Lovejoy Date: Sat, 20 Aug 1994 22:40:13 -0400 Subject: Message from Susanne! Susanne mentioned that AG has serviced about 150 "AAA" radio stations; again, your calls and requests to likely stations will help! A complete list of stations is forthcoming. The song "Down" was inspired by films such as "Hunt For Red October" and "Das Boot". In fact, the Translations were done for this song! However, they were not used in the final mix! Hi! Well, we got it today. If you don't want to hear about it, delete now. :) This album had damned well better get the attention it deserves, because it's definitely Happy's most accessible album yet. The songs are radio-friendly, and could do quite well given the proper promotion. Sadly, I don't see that happening with Aural Gratification's current resources, but I hope to be proven wrong! However, I don't think "radio-friendly" is necesarily a good thing, as far as quality goes, but I've only listened to the disc all the way through once, so I'm reserving judgement for quite a while. :) Here are first impressions, on a song-by-song basis: "Hold Me" Wow. Like, wow. This song started off the Joyous Lake performance, and it blew me away then. I didn't have high hopes for the recorded version to be able to do the same, since live versions are usually better in Happy's case, but this one succeeded. A very strong beginning here -- it's poppy but non fluffy, with Happy hitting both ends of her vocal range with ease. The rhythm parts bring a groove that should catch the ears of many a casual listener -- I hope they do the video for this song! "Just Like Tivoli" Nondescript. Doesn't seem to go anywhere. About a minute and a half too long. But I have a feeling this one needs to be explored in more depth, and will have to be discovered over a period of time, so I'm not going to say any more about it at this early date. "Dying" Also nondescript, nothing jumped out at me to make me remember it easily a few minutes later. Will definitely have to listen more. "Collective Heart" Probably the most "accessible" tune Happy's ever done. I could picture Mariah Carey doing this one -- but unlike "Dying" this one at least has real percussion, so I like it better after one listen. And I'm sure I'm going to be eating the Mariah Carey line *real* fast! :} "Building The Colossus" One of the strongest tracks on the album, perhaps ever, though it would have been stronger with real percussion. Still, it's got a hook that just won't quit, and one of the greatest lines ever: Mortar me here, mortar me there Gonna need stronger underwear uh-huh to keep this spine upright :) :) :) "Omar" I really like this one -- mellower, though lose the drum machine, please. (i think I'm detecting a trend here :) There are bits in this one that jump out at you to surprise, and it works! "Pride" Happy Unplugged, sort of -- reminiscent of her earliest work, it's nice to see she can still wow us with just her guitar and her voice. "You Never Told Me" A ballad! Turn down the lights, snuggle up with your honey, mmmh yes. "If I Ever See The Girl Again" This song is great. Sounds like it fell off a album from 1982, and I can't for the life of me figure out which one! :) The lyrics are the most interest- ing of the album, I think -- I know just where she lived, I have pictures of her in my head That was many years ago, and now she's floating far below my conscious-ness Well, I moved along, I moved a long way I'm shocking the gods, I play a good game There she goes, so pitiful, she's so stupid and man is she dull If I ever see the girl again, I'm gonna tell her that she can be my friend Id on't know how she survived with everybody eating her alive If I ever see the girl again, I'm gonna tell her that I will be her friend "Warpaint" meets "Closer", both musically and lyrically, though musically this song just BLEEDS Yes and Gabriel... "Down, Down" Starts off kind of like Milla's "The Alien Song (for those who listen)", then turns into vintage Equipoised Happy. This one will bear much more investiga- tion. At 6.00 it's the longest track on the album, but it's one of those that you don't want to end. "Now like the stingray, I shall glide through salt and sea..." "Glory" (Gad, I hate not having an online editor) This is another This is another "unplugged" song, with just Happy on guitar and Monica Wilson on cello. Short and sweet, introspective ("Way back then I could be afraid/ But if I want to move along, this is the bed I've made/Don't want to beat this system, it brings me Happiness"), nice rainy day song. And now... "Glory" Starts off with what sounds like a party -- Happy, Kelly Bird, and a few other women chatting in a room, then moves into a lush, rich track that leaves you at the end gasping for more. What a way to end! In all, the album starts off with a bang, then loses it for 3 tracks, then picks itself up and gets stronger and stronger, ending in a blaze of, er, glory. :) This is possibly Happy's best yet -- time will only tell where it will take her, hopefully to the recognition that's so long overdue!!!
