Hi Again! Well we in the Detroit area were blessed w/another song from "Building the Colossus" this morning. Here are some of the lyrics as I can make out: In the dream the air is sweet and you are willing Everytime the spirits meet it takes me on a free flight, hold tight till I feel you lying close to me How I know the dream is real and ever someday (Not sure of these) If you're alive then you will feel the cadence of my promise to praise keep your life an open book for me Be still my heart for I fall apart or my dream of..... my name my own... How can I describe my ... being no big pain all the rapture in my heart never my grey eyes fall upon your smile it screams to me (Electric guitar) Be still my heart for I fall apart or My dream of.... My name my own .... How can I describe my .... being no big pain all the rapture in my heart never my grey eyes fall upon your smile it screams to me Its the one that always keeps My trouble lies Knowing how my memory creeps Keep you in my minds eye hold tight Till I have the chance to find you. (Electric guitar again, cymballs, drums) The answers shaken Than I awaken I wait for slumber To see what other In the air the dream is sweet Just like your kisses There is nothing can compete with the fierce emotion and potion could sustain my thirst for you In the dream the air is sweet and you are willing (... Lyrics I can't make out) Transcribed from radio so not great sound quality. Its a beautiful song but the DJ never announces the names. Lots of bouncy organ throughout w/some heavy guitar work prior to the chourus? Strange but the chorus reminds me of Alice Cooper/Donovan singing the duet on "Billion Dollar Babies" kind of brought that song out of the recesses of my brain from about 15 years ago (Thanks Happy I needed that). Well lets hope she'll play another tomorrow (Who needs World Cafe anyway when you have WDET) ;) Have a good one! Hi- It is here and better than hearing it on the radio, sorry for the double posts but something was wrong w/our gateway. Well I went to SchoolKids and picked up a copy this morning and am I ever amazed. It is definately a different direction for Happy and her voice is better than ever. I like it very much and won't say much until everyone gets copies of it so you can be as surprised as I was. I called and spoke to Susanne's machine to leave word that its out and I also got a few names for her to call and maybe get Happy an in-store performance at SchoolKids when she's in town. Fingers Crossed. Call your local music stores and request it tell them its definately out the number is AGCD0029. I called SchoolKids on Tuesday and they had no release date for it and they received 5 copies yesterday. Three other local stores are clueless (one has a release date of Sep 2 the other 2 have no release date at all. Well best of luck in finding BtC. Have a great weekend! Well, I'm happy to report that the new Over the Rhine album, "Eve" will be available in stores on August 23. It's on IRS records. Despite still not having picked up last years "Patience", which so many people have raved about, I'd still buy either of these albums based on the earlier work "'til we have faces". In fact, I know Faces has been kind of hard to find. Actually, I think it's only been available at shows, so if anyone has been dying to get it, you can order it from Over the Rhine PO Box 2572 Cincinnati Ohio 45201 The disc is $13, cassette is $8, and the stunningly beatiful cd books are $2 (for extras, one does come with the disc :) Oh, $2 for postage, $3 for overseas postage. While the music on this disc is beautiful and haunting, I'll repeat for the benefit of those who haven't heard, the packaging is perhaps one of the best I have ever seen. I saw them live, and was moderately impressed, but I bought this disc because it looked incredible. (The rest of their merchandise is similarly wonderful.) Oh, concert stuff.... And here I was all excited because I thought woj and I would be the first ectophiles to have the CD... we're meeting my friend who has the disc in NYC tomorrow, and he's bringing it with him, in exchange for a free ticket to see Sarah at the Beacon. He thinks we're getting the raw end of the deal, but he's confused. :) I wonder if WFUV is going to be getting a copy of the CD... they really should. And since it's a local call for Susanne, she should harass them every day until they play it plenty! They bill themselves as a "folk" station, but I can see Happy fitting in with their playlists quite well. They play Ingrid Karklins, Sarah, October Project, Loreena McKennitt, and tons of other ecto artists all day long. They also sponsor shows all over the New York metro area, so if Happy were to become popular over there that might be a good way for her to play somewhere in New York. Come to think of it, if she does get airplay around NYC a good place for her to play would be the Mercury Lounge, where we just saw Milla the other night. It's a club, but it was designed for musical performance and the space, though small, is perfect for an artist like Happy. The Mercury Lounge is a new venue, but it's already got quite a reputation about town, and playing there would be excellent exposure in a city where it's so hard to shine brighter than all the other lights out there. (Uncle Bob, please feel free to forward these thoughts to Susanne! :) Looking forward to BTC tomorrow... Then after a shower and a trip to a few stores, fate was to smile on me but for an instant. My older son had just picked up a copy of Marvin the album and we had been listening in the tape player. I had long since given up on any hope of hearing a shard of BtC before its release. But as Bizzare Love Triangle came to an achingly sweet end, we popped out the tape and the radio came on. WXPN had just begun Collective Heart. Be still my heart! It's gonna be a fine album folks, yes I think so! >From the little I heard, it was *extremely* well produced. This track sounded a bit like I Say with a touch of Warpaint-album flavor. A three note rising progression, beautiful vocals, great sound - Kevin's bass work is excellent - and after a wonderful ending, the deejay came on and announced it was for the guy who had called twice that morning! This is a consummation devoutly to be wished. Music has been good, besides Frente we got Mazzy Star, Chantmania(!), and an old Spirit album. Their voices interweave in a way that just makes me melt inside. Normally I don't have anything to do with male vocals (with a few exceptions, and that's not a conscious decision I made, it's just the way my tastes run), but this is definitely an exception! Sounds like Lisa Loeb in a whiny mood. BTW: I'll be mixing down my demo in the studio on Saturday, and, if things go as schemed, should be getting a copy of the demo to one of the Phillyphiles soon after. It includes revised versions of my two songs from the latest HBP. If there's a clamor for it, I'll submit it for Doug's Dubbing Doohingus. BTW(2): On the new album by Prince (the artist who for some reason isn't being called 0+->) there's an incredible vocal display called "Solo", written in collaboration with, of all people, David Henry Hwang, author of "1000 Airplanes on the Roof". It's a mindblower. You can also find it on the b-side of his current single, "Letitgo", if ya don't want to spring for the album. ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 19 Aug 1994 22:41:23 -0700 (PDT) From: David Dixon Subject: Re: Neil Young Sleeps with Angels Speaking of Neil Young, while I was in Vancouver last week I picked up _Borrowed Tunes: A Tribute To Neil Young_, a 2-disc compilation of Young covers by 35 different Canadian artists, including Jann Arden, Blue Rodeo, Rose Chronicles and 54-40 (no Sarah, Crash Test Dummies or Jane, surprisingly). I've only listened to the first disc so far, but it's quite good. The best part of this CD is that all profits go towards funding education for the physically and mentally handicapped, a fitting cause considering the fact that Neil Young has two children with varying degrees of cerebral palsy. It was on 15 minutes before "What's New on VH1". You never know which one will be when. Sorry to those who didn't tune-in or tape early. :( I'm too tired to transcribe but here's a basic summary. All clips are *extremely* brief. The whole thing is like 2 min long. Announcer summarizes where she has lived and mentions her retreating into the wilderness of Montreal to write _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_. Sarah is shown playing "Ice" solo on guitar in a wilderness field. (Is this from a video?) Sarah is shown, apparently interviewed at "The Closer Cafe" in NYC. She talks about writing in Montreal and how the wilderness retreat helped her and the writing. During this some clips back to that field are shown. Cut to her playing "Good Enough" solo on guitar at cafe, no audience. She talks again about writing and often having candles around, but that too many candles can be bad since "they suck the oxygen out of the air." :) Clip from US "Possession" video. Changes to Sarah playing "Possession" solo at the piano. Her hair is very wavy, pratically curly, and lighter. (Is this from something? Not from the _Today_ show appearance.) Sarah talks some more about writing FTE. Sarah is shown at the cafe finishing some song on guitar (lyrics over and I probably will never bother to try and figure out which song.) Announcer relates that she got inspiration from Joan Baez at age 4. That's it, I'm tired, off to sleep. /-\ |_ |= >< Alex R. This may be the best set of the continuing series -- to date. :) Happy Rhodes Live! Joyous Lake Woodstock NY 11 Aug 1994 Tape recording by woj of Happy's 45min long concert. The recording quality is acceptable. The usual restrictions for concert recordings apply here. The flip side of this tapes holds an interview of Happy Rhodes by Meredith Tarr on the Champagne Jam and Happy's appearance on a WXPN fund-raiser. If you want the actual contents of any or all of these tapes, please e-mail me. Besides, each ordered tapes comes complete with a full cassette label and a separate printed content list. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.35 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks 906 NW 75th St Seattle WA 98117 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Can I add a tape to the tape dubbing project? If you have a tape or three that you would like to add, just ask yourself the simple question, "Would other Ectophiles like to hear this?" If you are uncertain, trying asking Ecto itself. In either case, if the answer is "Yes", I would be happy to add it. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
