All that I've really heard of her (that I know of) was when watching "Industrial Symphony #1" on TV late one night, but as I didn't know it was her at the time, and I didn't watch the entire film, it doesn't help me too much :) I do seem to recall that David Lynch writes most, if not all, her lyrics (and also directed Industrial Symphony #1), and that she had a particularly painful operation to alter her voice... ouch! Probably some of the wispiest falsetto-sounding music around! 'Floating Into The Night' is her first album, done along with David Lynch and Angelo Bandalamenti. She has recently come out with a second one whose name escapes me. *Very* ethereal music, it also served as much of the Twin Peaks background music (several tracks from the show are either straight off her album or instrumental versions thereof.) > > All that I've really heard of her (that I know of) was when watching > "Industrial Symphony #1" on TV late one night, but as I didn't know > it was her at the time, and I didn't watch the entire film, it doesn't > help me too much :) Yes, she was in that, playing an angel if I recall. (Or at least she floated around, if not an angel) David designed a very disturbing art form of music and images with this. > > I do seem to recall that David Lynch writes most, if not all, her > lyrics (and also directed Industrial Symphony #1), and that she had > a particularly painful operation to alter her voice... ouch! Yes, there does seem to be a holy trinity between Cruise, Lynch, and Bandalamenti.. Lynch does much of the initial writing, then Bandalamenti orchestrates it into a final piece. Subject: joy to the lake! i apologize in advance for taking so long in getting this review of the joyous lake concert out to ecto. meredith and i got home rather late friday evening after dropping tamar off in new haven and this weekend was spent attempting to further transform our apartment from a warehouse into a home. you'll be glad to know that we are about 80% of the way there but i imagine that you'll be gladder to know that this introduction is over and i'll be getting to this review now. :) let's see...as of thursday afternoon around 12:30pm, i was still not sure how i would be getting up to poughkeepsie to meet up with jeff wasilko, anja from #ecto, mike curry, meth and tamar. meth was driving herself and tamar from new haven in my car. i had been using meth's car to minimize the amount of mileage on her car due to the forthcoming demise of a warranty and an impending trip to the dealer for service. wednesday night, i had left a message with dave steiner and talked to greg "footah!" bossert (who, incidentially, is still alive and wishes all the ectophiles well) to see if they were interested in coming along. unfortunately, dave, who has a car, was unable (though interested) to join us. i was unable to get in touch with greg, who does not have a car, on thursday so i investigated the possibility of taking a train from lovely boonton, nj to equally lovely poughkeepsie, ny. of course, as anyone who regularly uses the tri-state rail system knows, this is just not possible. to accomplish this seemingly easy trip would entail approximately four hours of time and the use of five trains (nj transit from boonton to hoboken, a path train to the 33rd st station, the n/r subway to times square, a shuttle to grand central and a metro north train to poughkeepsie). needless to say, i nixed the idea since arriving around 6 pm (the earliest i could have made it considering the current time which was around 1:30 pm) would be two hours too late according to the current plan which was to meet in poughkeepsie around 4. hence, i decided to risk putting additional mileage on meth's car and drive. as it turned out, taking the train might not have been a bad idea but i shall not go into that now. (in literature, the previous statement is known as foreshadowing.) with this decision made, i spent my last 30 minutes in boonton thursday afternoon getting the house in order, putting extra food out for the cat, picking up the mail, munching a few oreos and trying to contact greg. as i mentioned, this last effort was fruitless though i was successful in my other tasks. at 2 pm, i hopped in meth's car and headed north. at this time, i'd like to leave me driving through the wilds of norther new jersey and southern new york to expound on geography. as meth will do doubt like to point out, i have an affinity for maps. following toys, maps are the second-best way to keep a woj quiet and occupied at doctor's offices and other places where wojs should be silent. hence, i am often consulted for things involving planning trips and the like. however, for whatever reason, i have a mental block when it comes to poughkeepsie. i either overestimate or underestimate the time required to get there from any point and i always seem to pick the wrong way to go there from connecticut (this statement is also known as foreshadowing in literary circles). with this personality quirk in mind, this tale returns to a white geo metro hightailing it north on the new york state thruway. thinking that the drive to poughkeepsie would take about two hours, i left around 2 to arrive at the prearranged 4 pm meeting time. however, i found myself in the parking lot of the marriot courtyard in lovely poughkeepsie around 3:30 pm with less than 75 miles registered on the odometer. i got out of the car and tried to find the hotel's front desk. of course, all the side doors near where i parked were locked "for the security of our patrons" and i had to find the front entrance first. while heading around the building to find said portal, i spied someone wearing a tori amos shirt walking in the same general direction. i called out, "jeff, i presume?" only to discover that the person with exceptional taste in t-shirts was none other than the illustrious mike curry, minister of the the milla mailing list. we shook hands and headed into the hotel. at the front desk, we asked for the room number of jeff wasilko and were told that they could not give it to us but that they'd be happy to call his room so he could have that honor. we did so, discovered that the ecto-suite was #252 and set off in search of the room. as the name of this hotel (the marriot courtyard) implies, the layout of the building was square with rooms along the perimeter and a courtyard in the center. if we had known this previously, it would have saved mike and i some time walking to the ectosuite which was more or less opposite the front desk across the courtyard. instead, we walked the long way around which, while being a successful means to reach room #252, was far from the most expedient way of getting there (i will refrain from lecturing ecto on the difference between state and path functions except to say that fatigue is a path function and location is not). when mike and i knocked on the door, we were greeted by jeff and anja (who had also arrived via the same route as us but who, inexplicably, had been given a key to the door without having to call up from the front desk). we proceeded to while away the time waiting for meredith and tamar to arrive listening to music, discussing the internet and, in general, being snarky (i'll take this opportunity to reiterate an observation i made to jeff, mike and anja after we had been sitting there for 30 minutes: "one of the funny things about meeting people from the net is that we do not have to waste time feeling each other out; we simply dig right in from the moment we co-exist.") those of you with a keen sense of time will note that by the time i had made this observation, it was well after the pre-arranged meeting time (mike and i arrived around 3:30, it took us some time to find the front desk and the ectosuite and it was 30 minutes or so before i made my comment). by 4:30pm, we had begun to worry about the arrival of meredith and tamar. according to her plan, she was to leave work around 2, pick up tamar and be on the road by 2:30 with an estimated arrival time of 4:30 (according to my estimate of the time to drive from new haven to poughkeepsie along the route i had recommended). by 5, we were beginning to wonder if something had happened to keep meth from leaving work according to schedule. by 5:30, we were beginning to wonder if something had happened along the road. at 6, we received a call from the front desk: it was them! they had made it and would be up to the suite momentarily. after they came into the suite and introductions were made, we asked what had taken them so long to get here. nothing had except that my directions had been as far from the most efficient route as possible without taking them through timbuktu. for fear of embarrassing myself, i shall refrain from expanding on this plot complication except to point out that interstate 84 has more jiggers between hartford, ct and beacon, ny than a bottle of jack daniels. with all ectophiles (and #ectophiles) arrived and stomachs growling, we headed to woodstock to find joyous lake and supper. fortunately, despite the forthcoming festival, there was little traffic between poughkeepsie and woodstock. we arrived with little trouble, little fanfare and some unfounded trepidation with respect to signs indicating that parking permits were required in town (we later deduced that these signs only applied once the festival had started). woodstock is a fairly small town with a couple main throughfares so it was not difficult to find joyous lake, which was a quarter mile away from the tavern where mike had seen milla and just a few houses down from a candleshop where one of my sarah mclachlan t-shirts had elicited an envious glance from one of its employees the one time i had visited woodstock previously. as we drove by, we noted that it appeared that dinner could be got at joyous lake so by the time we looped back through town, we had decided to simply go there and check it out instead of trying to find another restaurant in town. we parked on the street a block away and walked over. joyous lake is a fairly large brown building with a deck on the left side. it almost looks more like a beach house than a tavern. there were posters advertising the alternative woodstock compilation and shows stapled to the front wall. the names of the artists were written around the perimeter of the poster and happy's is at the right of the top. meredith and anja grabbed posters on the way out. we walked inside only to find happy and kevin and some other friends of theirs on their way out. happy recognized meredith (and her ecto t-shirt) so we all talked for a few minutes. they remembered mike from the milla show, were pleased to meet jeff and anja and, though they did not recognize me, they knew my name. i was wearing my KaTe KonvenTion shirt and happy said that it was blasphemous to wear that shirt in her presence. they had to get going so they headed out and as they did so, happy asked if there was anyone from montana with us. we said no and headed inside (my brain was working remarkably slow that evening since it took me a little while to figure out that she was asking about the record shop owner/happy fan i had met in billings in june). inside, joyous lake is a pretty typical performing space. the entrance is at the front of the left side of the building. a bar is in the front near the door. a low stage about ten feet deep is in the back of the building and tables line the left wall past the jukebox (which will figure greatly in this tale). we talked to a waitress (who turned out to be andrea, aural gratification's secretary) who helped to drag together a couple tables right up near the front just to the left of the stage. we sat down and ordered. dinner was good if not great - standard fare as this kind of place goes. four of the six had some variation on the hamburger while tamar opted for a salad and meredith, who had been overdosing on mcdonald's as of late, had a chicken sandwich. they had a nice selection of beer, for those who are interested in such matters. i'd recommend the two local brews they had on tap if i could remember their names. the first was, i believe, hudson lager and the second, indian something-or-other porter. our one complaint about the draughts was that as the evening went on, the glasses became smaller. after dinner, we continued to wait for the evening's events to start. we had established that there would be three bands playing that evening. first up would be conehead buddha, second would be countless others (good name, that) and, finally, happy. we knew we were in for a wait since a) she was third up and b) she told us that she wouldn't be on stage until at least midnight. however, we didn't know just how long we would wait until much, much later. during the interim, we made do as best as we could to keep ourselves from becoming bored out of our skulls. jeff and meredith investigated the songs that were on the aforementioned jukebox and jeff put in a dollar to get his selections. unbeknownst to jeff as his back was turned, a man in a wheelchair, whom we had noted earlier as loud and, perhaps, drunk, approached and accosted jeff. the rest of us at the table tried to warn him but he didn't see us. jeff will have to elaborate on the conversation that ensued but the end result was that one of jeff's selections was chosen by the man (he had wanted to hear a certain stevie nicks song but didn't have the money). by the way that he enjoyed the song when it played, it seemed a simple way to make someone happy. later in the evening, mike made a few selections on the jukebox but transposed the song and album numbers. needless to say, this made for an interesting set of three songs that graced the pa system. we also amused ourselves with anja's origami skills. she made some whooping cranes, a stellated dodecahedron and an elf boot. the former two creations were used, along with the candles on the table, to make an altar. the boot was given to andrea, whose reaction to the altar was, "i don't know whether to be in awe of you guys or to be afraid." the other great source of amusement was our continued snarkiness. since we had a whole tavern-full of people to direct our acidic comments, we wasted no time in doing so. in fact, while the first two bands were on and it was too loud for us to converse without yelling, we resorted to writing down our comments on napkins and placemats and passing them around amongst ourselves. a low-tech irc, if you will. some of these notes, which would have been damning evidence in a court of law, were burned by the evening's end. the others were left behind. one source of irritation throughout the entire evening was the repeated appearance of counting crows' "mr. jones" on the jukebox, no doubt selected by devoted fans of this illustrious band. by evening's end, the entire table would scream, "augh!" when this song came over the loudspeaker. one particular time, tamar ran outside screaming which, no doubt, amused the other patrons. i suspect that people began to select this song just to annoy us before too long. incidentially, tamar is quite good at that dance thing that counting crows' singer does during the video for that song. must be a berkeley thing.... a while after dinner, conehead buddha began to set up their instruments. they played two songs and then disappeared for a hour. we deduced that those songs must have been their soundcheck though the general consensus of the ectotable was that it would have been better if those songs had been their entire set. conehead buddha is, essentially, a ska band made up of hicks. as ska bands go, they're not bad but they were rather uninspired and much too loud. unfortunately, they did return after a hour and played a much too long set whose high point was a ska-ified version of the jimi hendrix classic, "foxy lady." did i mention that they were too loud? they finally finished and disassembled their instruments while countless others started to put theirs together. fortunately, we did not have to wait a hour between soundcheck and performance this time. countless others are a pretty standard "alternative" rock band. i thought that the music was fairly good but the singers' voice was grating. the ectotable decided that they were aptly named since they sounded like countless others. during their set, meth and tamar went for a walk outside and found that the jewel box and booklet of _building the colossus_ was on display at the table where copies of the _alternative woodstock_ compilation were on sale. there was also a signup sheet for their mailing list. during the second band's set i went out and took a look at this as well. the jewel booklet is very nice. according to meredith's recollection, the cover is a photo of happy that had been broken up into five squares and arranged in an x pattern on a white background. since that's difficult to envision, you'll just have to wait until you see it yourselves cos i dunno if i can describe it any clearer right now. all the lyrics and performing credits are listed. information on subscribing to ecto is also included along with some special thank yous to certain ectophiles who shall remain nameless for now. the surprise for ectophiles on the cover is neat but i suspect that only ibm/dos afficiandos will get it. the back cover of the booklet is a solarized picture of happy. the jewel case is clear and another picture of happy is underneath the tray where the disc goes. the jewel case was glued to a piece of cardboard so we couldn't see what the back looked like. as i was standing there looking at this, happy walked up behind me and jokingly said, "oh, that's shit, i've heard it." we laughed and talked a bit more about the upcoming show. i pointed out to her the guy from montana who had shown up while she was gone. i'm not sure how she knew that he was coming. i'd hazard a guess that he called aural gratification since i told him to call the number listed in the booklets of the previous albums. we all went back inside and waited through the end of countless others' set. after they finished, kevin and the rest of the band started getting their gear set up for happy's performance. martha waterman was on the right side of the stage surrounded by four keyboards (two to the front and two to the side), the wall and a kevin's stack. kevin was at the right back with two basses. the drummer was at the left side of the back. the guitarist was at stage left. between him and happy was mark somebody-or-other who sang backup and provided some percussion. after their soundcheck, kevin and the guitarist stayed on stage and noodled around for a bit. this noodling eventually turned into the first song as, around 2 in the morning, happy and the others took the stage to the cheers of the small core of fans, ectophiles and diehards at the bar remaining. i already posted the setlist but i'll recap it here for completeness. according to a copy of the setlist that meredith swiped, they played "hold me," "if i ever see the girl," "i say," "ashes to ashes," "poetic justice," "you never told me," "don't want to hear it," "building the colossus" and "murder." "possessed" was on the list but was not played in the interest of the lateness of the performance though the ectophiles would've happily stayed up for one more song. they did not play an encore. overall, the show was great. there were little technical problems (one short moment of feedback and martha's microphone was too close to her mouth so she overpowered it whenever she sang). the sound was good though the acoustics weren't the greatest. however, the performance was excellent. the old songs all had new arrangements and the new ones were all quite good. i won't describe them individually but i'll say that they all were fairly upbeat and sounded progressive - parts of some even strongly reminded me of marillion or early genesis. afterwards, we milled about the bar and chatted some more with happy and kevin. this is when jeff learned about the coming tour and when i prevented happy from singing "mr. jones" for us. she seemed pretty pleased with he performance but disappointed by the small turnout and the lateness of the show (i imagine that these two were related though i'm sure that the thursday night festivities in saugerties contributed as well). while happy and kevin talked to the guy from montana (whose name is francis, by the way) and i took the opportunity to relieve myself. i only mention this since, as i found out later, i peed next to david torn who had been in the audience along with kelly bird. i also ran into wheelchair man again who needed some help getting in and out of the bathroom. needless to say and as i'm sure jeff would attest, that was another interesting encounter. after i returned, tamar asked about buying copies of the new album but they didn't have any handy and i got the feeling that they were not too keen on selling advance copies. we jokingly told them that we'd just have to record the world cafe preimere this week, digitize the entire album and upload it to the net. happy's eyes kinda glazed over at this point and simply said, "i'm asleep now. i haven't hear you say anything for the past few minutes." finally around 3am or so, we left and drove back to poughkeepsie. i fell asleep in the back seat but redeemed my earlier geographical errors when i woke up to find us lost in poughkeepsie, told mike (who was driving) to take two turns and put us back on our way to the hotel. we trundled into the ectosuite, made sleeping arrangements and crashed. the next morning, after showers and such, we ate breakfast/brunch/lunch at a nearby friendly's (where we heard sarah mclachlan's "possession" on the sound system), took a few last pictures and parted ways. meredith and i drove tamar back to new haven, did a little record shopping at cutler's and sam goody's (it's the only decent sam goody's in the nation far as i can tell), headed back to poughkeepsie to pick up her car and drove back to boonton, arriving around 11pm on friday night, exhausted but happy. +woj ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 15 Aug 94 01:25:57 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (nimm es zu den kuhlschrank!) The first thought that came to mind was, "I'm dead." That was a reasonable thought to have considering he just took a bullet. "Why did I end up here? Of all the dreams to relive during the afterlife, this isn't even in my top twenty. Why can't I relive that great dream with me, Tori and a piano at Carnegie. That was a good one." That was when Daniel saw the familiar silhouette and the same voice telling him to climb out. Confusion was soon replaced by anger. Daniel scaled the wall of the crater with more skill than a professional rock climber. When he climbed to the point where he usually fell, the fear caused an adrenalin rush. Daniel shot his arm up as his hand gripped the rim and he pulled himself up. He was so stunned at finally succeeding, all he could do was sit there staring at the bottom. A crooked, weak smile came to his face when he saw the shadow looming over him. He slowly got to his feet and he looked into the face of this stranger. What he saw caused Daniel to fall flat on his butt with a loud thump. There was nothing particularly odd about his looks. We wouldn't notice him walking past us on the street. He had curly brown hair and glasses. He was about 6'4" and large for his height. He had a two faced smile. At first glance, the smile was openly friendly. After a little study, you could see an almost dangerous look that let you know that there was a lot going on behind that smile. Like I said, nothing that people don't see everyday. In fact, exactly the kind of face that Daniel sees everyday...in the mirror. As Daniel sat there watching himself watching himself, he was trying to put his thoughts together. "Pleasetellmethisisalladream.Letmewakeupinmyownbed andIswearIwillneverskipchurchonSundays.Ipromise," Daniel thought. At that, Dan (from here on out we'll refer to the dream version of Daniel as Dan. Thanks --the management) picked up Daniel and gave him a little shake. "This isn't a dream. Well it is kind of a dream, but not in the sense that it's not real, not happening to you...erm me." Dan said. "You can read my mind?" "What do you mean your mind? We're one in the same. It's not difficult to know what I'm thinking." Daniel said, "Stop that! We can't be the same person. There's only one of me." "We're not the same exact person, no. I've been living you life here, and you've been living my life back there. We are different aspects of the same person. Here, anything is possible. The secrets of the mind aren't secret anymore. Listen, I need your help. I'm waging a battle that can only be won in both your world and mine. Normally, the unlocked powers that you experience in "dreams", the flying, the strength, the telepathy, all of that is lost when you wake up. That's normally. However, we are special. We have found the junction between your world and mine. With my help, you'll be able to take this knowledge back with you." "Take it back with me? Back there, I am dead, or bleeding to death." "Not a problem. Here is just a little of what you'll need to get by. Our time is short and you'll be gone in just a minute or two." Dan placed his hand on Daniel's forehead and Daniel immediately knew all he needed to know. Normal telepathy doesn'e work this quickly, but when you're dealing with your own mind, it's as quick as a thought. When he came to, he was lying in a pool of his own blood and sitting on top of his chest was a .44 caliber slug. He saw about five people standing around him with shocked looks on their faces. He picked up the bullet, got to his feet, and started the rest of the walk home. He had that building feeling of joy inside of him. It was a feeling like you get on Christmas morning just before you go down to open up the presents. Yeah, I know. The true joy is in the giving, but the receiving is severely under-rated. Daniel finally had a purpose in life. There was more to his existence than just school and the same thing day in, day out. Daniel had to get home soon. He had to get some sleep.... Next: What does Austin, TX hold in store for Daniel? Daniel's purpose becomes clearer as he begins to unlock his power and he starts to explore the world of Daniel. See ya soon. I've tried looking on the standard news-groups for this info, but not many people on those groups have heard of Sarah or Milla, let alone figured out the music. Maybe there's mosaic www home pages for these? As I can attest from experience :-), storytelling grounded in reality is oftentimes the best kind. Now that it's gotten out what y'all went thru to get there, it may be appropriate for the band to cover Robyn Hitchcock's "I Often Dream of Trains" at future performances :-). Looks like Woodstock 2 has proven Clemenceau right. The rain delay, the mud, the _de facto_ free concert, etc. reek of _deja vu_. I saw the director's cut of the _Woodstock_ movie over the weekend, which promised 40 minutes of new footage, so I have some sense of what went on the first time around :-). It rained here Friday and Saturday, so the ambience was appropriate locally. My contribution to the cause of self-education was to obtain a map of upstate New York from the motor club, to check whether Bearsville was in the path of the mudslides likely to come out of Saugerties. It didn't appear to be, so AG's compound should come out of all this uninnundated :-). WRT Onica's query: _World Cafe_ is a highly regarded eclectic music show on public radio. I've never heard it because it's not carried in this market, a fact which I've always regretted but which I'm powerless to do anything about as long as the WBEZ program department is under its current management. Strange synchronicity: On the way home Friday, after picking out and mailing a birthday card for Vickie, I had the irresistible impulse to stop in at the Berghoff for a beer. As fate would have it, this was the same way I observed Jessica's birthday a couple of years ago. By strange coincidence, among my neighbors at the bar with whom I happened to speak was a Rutgers alum from New Jersey. I never thought to ask if he knew Jessica, but I have no _a pri- ori_ reason to think that he did. Even synchronicity has its limits, I suppose :-). A final bit of encomium: my incoming snailmail Friday night included my standard-issue, book-rate copy of the current Happy Birthday Project. I dozed off on much of Side 4--a pitfall of listening at 2 AM--but in the aggre- gate, it seems like the best all-around installment in the series since Doug and I have been doing their care and feeding. You have much to look forward to. Mitch ------------------------- "Here's to us all." --Leland McKenzie, in the final line of dialogue in the final episode of _L.A.
