Greeting fellow anticipators, Whilst perusing AOL today, I checked in on their Woodstock section. It's prominently featured after logins these daze, and I figured why not have a look? Included are digitised photos of the site, sound clips, promo files and whatnot. In a section marked PC files is a file named "Happy Rhodes sound sample". It's about 11 seconds of "I Say." AG's address and phone number were prominently featured. It was uploaded by AmyA, whoever she might be. (I checked the ecto file, but she may be new here - are you here?) I must say, Bravo! A nice job of Happyvangelizing! Looking forward to posts about the Joyous Lake performance. Hopefully some details will come in when I log on to send this out. Enjoy! Speaking of which, I went hunting for Happy Rhodes here in Pittsburgh (as I've only found out about her online, though I'm a big fan of Tori Amos, etc.) Stopped at a shop called Bananas, which usually has some off-beat material. The manager there had never heard of her, but he had a catalog of music which he could order. He looked her up, and said there was no listing. I was a bit disappointed, but while he went off looking for some other music for me, I looked under "H" and there she was. Apparently the "professionals" who compiled that list had no idea that Happy Rhodes wasn't a proper title, but a name. Anyhow, to make a long story short, the guy ordered several copies of Rhodesongs, one for me, one for him, and my guess is that the store will now be stocking her material regularly. ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 13 Aug 1994 21:39:42 -0400 From: pmcohen@netaxs.com (Paul Cohen) Subject: New Stuff Well, the new Sophie B. Hawkins album is out and I just got it. Very nice album. Similar style to the first album, but at this point I'm not sure I like it better than the first album. Last week, I was very happy to acquire boots of the two extra "This Woman's Work" disks. They sound very nice. I gave everybody in the office a good dose of Kate this week. I also picked up the album by 22 Brides. Very nice. I'm surprised I haven't heard them mentioned here. Now, anybody from the Philly area know who had WXPN's album of the week last week. I heard one song by a female artist, but didn't catch the name. I really liked it too. ________Paul Cohen______________________pmcohen@netaxs.com__________________ Philadelphia, PA __________________ ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 13 Aug 94 22:55:46 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (nimm es zu den kuhlschrank!) So if someone could offer, again information/opinions concerning > this, it'd be much appreciated :) > I've been waiting for a chance to talk about this song. I got a copy of the whole Gershwin tribune album in the mail last week (Thanks, Tim!), and absolutely *love* it. If you're expecting another Red, Hot & Blue, where each artist does their rock-inspired interpretation of the song, forget this album. It is done with Broadway-style instrumentation, in other words, in the style the songs were written in. You won't recognize most of the performers. Jon Bon Jovi sounds absolutely nothing like himself. Sinead O'Conner finally learned to sing. In fact, the only petrson you'll really recognize is Kate. Her voice is distinctive, mainly because she normally sings in a softer style. But this album is INCREDIBLE. It's a wonderful interpretation of Gershwin songs, and IMHO a real tribute. The artists didn't demand that the tributee adapt to their style. Instead, the artists adapted themselves to him. Technically, the album is not a tribute to Gershwin, but is a tribute to Larry Adler. But it is all Gershwin, all glory, and all beautiful. The Man I Love (heck, that _is_ why you're still reading, right?) is pretty good. In fact, Kate sounds like the goddess that she is. :) Unfortunately, she leaves out a good chunk of the song, but her voice is well suited to the lonely yearning for romance. My verdict? If you like Gershwin and music of that ilk, run out and buy the compilation. If all you like is Kate Bush, buy the single. And if you adore both, do what I'm doing...buying it all! :) ==> Valerie ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 14 Aug 1994 11:51:08 -0400 (EDT) From: eric jensen Subject: ny ectophiles and lisa cerbone just wanted to let ectophiles in the ny area know that lisa cerbone will be performing at cb's gallery on monday night. if you haven't heard her music yet, you will be pleasantly surprised. her voice is absolutely beautiful, the music is hypnotic and entrancing, and her lyrics -- very touching and moving. hope you get a chance to check out this new artist. if anyone wants any info. about her or excerpts from critics (she's been raved about a lot this past year), let me know. eric ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 14 Aug 1994 13:37:12 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael K Curry Subject: Joy in NYC :) eric jensen wrote: > just wanted to let ectophiles in the ny area know that lisa cerbone will > be performing at cb's gallery on monday night. Subject: sarah! hello dearest ecto folk! well, since i dont write much here i figured when i got the chance i would! i just wanted to give a review of the sarah concert here in austin on august 12th.. thinking that the concert started at 8pm (it really started at 9p), my friend and i got to the backyard at about 6.40p. i think a lot of people were in the same frame of mind, but all we could keep saying was "where is everybody?" see, the show was sold out so we figured we would have the worst place in line. normally this place has festival seating so everybody gets there early.. so anyway, they let us in at about 7.30p. i ran to the front a bit upset bacuse chairs had been put up, but i got 3rd row semi-center seats so we were happy :) it was a bit boring waiting and waiting with no money in my pocket to blow, but at 8.45p the October Project went on. it's hard to explain this new venue (or semi-new) we have in austin, but it really is beautiful. there's a lot of trees and it makes it feel a bit more cozy than just land and a stage. i think it is great for the performers too because the lead singer of the OP (sorry i dont know her name) raved over the place. by the time that they went on the sun was set and the lights could be used to their full potential and if you have heard the OP you know what i am talking about. the music was gorgeous and the lights enhanced it even more... then sarah.. she went on about a half an hour after the OP and she seemed real happy to be back in town. a guy told me that the same crowd keeps going to her shows and it is very obvious who they are. the only thing that he was concerned with was that no one stood up. anyway, not to go into major details of the show.. the whole show down to every minute detail was flawless. the atmosphere, the people, the lights and the band was all up to full potential. i have to say that it is the best concert i have been to in years. i never thought that it could be that great!! i wish i could see her again and from the post i got on her tour dates, she coming back thru dallas in september so i may have to make a trip :) looks like i have a new fave artist to collect cds (oh no more $$$ :/) ! oh.. and one other side note.. sarah did an in-store at waterloo records which was great also. she played 3 songs: "ice cream", "hold on" and another i cant remember. after that she signed autographs and i got her to sign my FTE disk. i also asked her if she was familiar with the internet (because i had read that this "use the force luke" thing had been used often) and she said that she did and smiled. i also mentioned the "use the force luke" thing and told her that i wouldnt embarass him that night.. she said thanks and signed my disk. she seems so down to earth and a really nice person. and as far as i know, she waited there to sign every persons disk or whatever no matter how long it took.. i really respect artists that do that. anyway, thanks for letting me ramble!! later, kathy (a newly devoted sarah fan) p.s. hey neal, moo, fili, jeff, and all the #ecto-irc clan!! :) ======================================================================== From: cas9353@ultb.isc.rit.edu (C.A. I second the rave for The Backyard. I say Leonard Cohen there last year and it was incredible: beautiful place, good sightlines, and great sound.
