I am about to take a risk. A big risk. A very big risk. (Shut up and tell them!) Ok. As a vent for my creative energy (Hah!), and as a part of my therapy, I decided to write a serial based on a recurring dream that I have every now and then. I am also including the wonderful people of #ecto as well as Ecto cast members. I would like all those who are interested in being in the story to sned me some email and give me a personality description (an honest one preferably) and your desire to be a hero(ine), a villian, or a village person (Macho, macho man!!!). I am dreadfully afraid that people will be angry that I'm wasting too much "bandwidth". Well, tough noogies! I was a lurker and I'm claiming the retro-active bandwidth. This story is for our use only. It is not going to be published (due to lack of writing talent and style), I'm just having a bit of fun. See you in the funny papers. This wasn't too uncommon an occurance considering the amount of sleep he was getting or the subject of the math lecture. For some reason, vectors and matrices never interested him. To tell the truth, not much interested him. Danny boy was in a proverbial rut. He's "spinning his wheels" as mom and dad would put it. It's been this way since his first tragic attempt at "the college experience", a half-assed attempt at that. WAIT!!! STOP THE PRESSES! Life ain't all that bad. He's kinda happy in his own way. Three meals a day, a roof over his head, and a sort of direction for his life. You see boys and ghouls, Dan had a problem. He was talented in two opposite arenas in the game of life. He had a head for math, but his heart belong to music and the theatre. He could sing, act, and differentiate most trigonometric functions at the same time. This particular skill is not all that much in demand, but he was proud of it nonetheless. All in all though, he was happy. He had good friends, good grades, and good music. "Who could ask for anything more?" Oh! There he goes. He's asleep. This is what you get for staying up late and not bothering to drink four pots of coffee. If you could pop into his head for a bit, or maybe read minds, you'd see this dream inside of Dan's noggin: He's standing at the bottom of a huge concrete crater, about 60ft deep with steeply sloping sides. The sky is gray and the air feels humid. A storm was on the way. In the distance, he could hear a voice (a familiar voice?) challenging him to try and climb out. There was nowhere to dig your fingers into, no footholds, but for some reason he was making progress. After about five minutes, he was halfway up the wall of the crater. The voice was continuing to taunt him. Daniel was getting just a tad pissed off.He doubled his efforts and after another few minutes, he was just about three feet fron the ledge. He could see a pair of boots and black denim pants belonging to the object of his irritation. As he reached for the ledge, his feet lost grip and he went into a free-fall. SIDE NOTE: Everybody says that if you're dreaming of falling and you hit the ground, you die. This ain't necessarily so! Well, not for Daniel anyway. He hit the ground lying on his back. It didn't hurt him. It felt like hitting a huge crash mat at high speeds. He got to his feet, looked up to the top of the crater, and saw a dark silhouette. As he was waking up, he heard the voice again; a little bit of laughter and a phrase that should be his epitaph. "If at first you don't succeed..." When he opened his eyes, he noticed that class was five minutes from finishing. Daniel began packing his things, eager to get the hell out of there. The first place he went after class was the computer lab. Home away from home. He had friends to talk to via irc (channel name withheld by request ;) and he wanted to check his e-mail. After reading the digest of his favorite mailing list (name withheld by request as well ;), he decided to call it a night. As Daniel left the student union, he thought, "You know, UW-Milwaukee isn't as bad as they say it is." On his way to class today, Daniel was handed three pamphlets detailing the "problems" with the University of Wisconsin school system. He just figured that some people would complain about something even if they had what they want. Some are just professional complainers. It was cool and breezy on his walk home. He enjoyed walking at night. It gave him some time to put his thoughts together. So his mood turned sour when he felt the barrel of a gun pushing against his back. "Damn! Why tonight?", he muttered under his breath. The thug ordered, "Hand over your wallet and your bag too. Just do as I say, and you won't get hurt." Daniel always fantasized about being the hero. He'd seen it in enough movies and comic books to make him want the chance to try it himself. This fantasy, in comibination with just a tad bit of foolish pride, resulted in probably the most idiotic thing he'd ever done (his parents would disagree). He spun around and grabbed for the gun. In a panic, the first time mugger pulled the trigger. The last thing Daniel saw before he left consciousness was the man running away from the crime scene. Then all was dark. The lyrics to "My Way" drifting into his head. When Daniel woke (or so he thought), he was standing at the bottom of a concrete crater about 60ft deep...... That hardly made for an "enthusiastic thread" I don't know whether people read the posts there and decided that they didn't need to add anything, or whether they simply ignored it, so I'll say some more on the subject... Every now and then, a new person hears about Happy and ecto and subscribes. Sometimes it might be via word of mouth, sometimes via the #ecto irc channel, and on occasion it is sheer chance. But imho, despite the relatively miniscule number of posts about Happy, the majority of new subscribers to ecto will have heard about Happy via the usenet. (I'm not certain of this, but it seems likely to me.) And for each person that subscribes to the list, there's probably at least a few who find Happy's music and love it, but aren't interested in being on a mailing list. The thing is, while a few people might notice the topic listed for #ecto, _thousands_ of people read usenet groups such as alt.music.alternative, alt.music.alternative.female, rec.music.misc, and the like. If you Happyvangelise on #ecto there's a chance you'll help someone discover Happy. If you Happyvangelise on usenet, there's a chance you'll help _dozens_ of people discover Happy. The fact that someone posted to alt.music.alternative.female asking specifically about Happy, and it got a grand total of three replies doesn't seem to say a lot for Happy's music in the eyes of the potential ectophile. If you thought the replies the post got said all that was needed to be said about it, then I would like to respectfully disagree... We are in the rare position of truely being able to help an artist who deserves to be known, to become known. All it takes is for one radio dj to see a post and check her out and play her on their show, and suddenly there's a whole bunch of people who will actually get to _hear_ her... people without any link to the net... and that's just one example... Very few people know about ecto, but thousands of people read the Usenet, and the way I see it, two or three replies will generate very little interest indeed, but if there were, say, ten replies to a question, a *LOT* of people will suddenly notice and have a look... and for those that send email replies to usenet queries about Happy, followup to the newsgroup instead... email reaches only one person... I know that a lot of you read these newsgroups, so why not grab these opportunities to help Happy... this mailing list would not exist if not for her! An occasional post about her can't be so much trouble, and there are lots of opportunities to mention her... threads like "Top 10 albums of early 90s", "Best songs to be depressed to", "What songs cheer you up?", "Best debut album", "Best song covers", "What are you listening to right now?", "Best live artists", and "Upcoming releases" to name just a few; and as was mentioned, if there's a thread specifically about Happy, then we should aim to get as many people as possible to add to it simply because a reasonable sized thread _will_ attract the attention of a _huge_ number of readers... "i hate to do this to you," she said, "but i think angel is dying." so i drove into the city and picked up holly and angel and took them to the emergency vet hospital at U of Penn. the cat was in agony. heart failure and some kind of shock that was making her lungs fill up with fluid. she was making this awful awful sound, sort of like a hiss/shriek/cough/splinteringmetal sound, the whole way there, and her gums were turning blue. so i dropped holly and the cat at the door and went to park the car (as per the uniformed guys demand), and when i got back, the cat was missing and holly was filling out papers. we sat, talked, petted someone else's dog. then the vet came out. she said that they'd managed to get angel's heart started up again, and some of the fluid pumped out, but that in order to save her life it would take some really intensive care. minimum of about $3000 to try. we went in to see the cat. she was lying on the towel we'd brought her in, with electrodes clipped to her, and an IV in her leg, and hoses in her mouth. a second vet was pumping air in and out of her, and one of her hind legs was twitching spasmodically. so, angel is gone. holly is a basket case. i'm wired and tired and stressed. i took holly home and we talked and watched letterman, and then i put her to bed and gave her a full body massage until she went to sleep, covered her, turned out the lights and let myself out. and now i'm drinking vodka and trying to figure out if there is a way to program this machine to give me a neck and shoulder rub... ack. sorry to dump all this on you. but i needed to say it. thanks for being ecto. love brni ======================================================================== From: amurray@afb1.ssc.edinburgh.ac.uk Date: 12 Aug 1994 12:15:48 +0000 Subject: Kristen Hersh I seen to recall a posting on ecto - a few months ago - suggesting that Kristen Hersh would be appearing at the Edinburgh Festival (at the acoustic music venue I think) but I`ve not seen anything advertised, either in the festival guide or locally (I live in Edinburgh). Itis being posted on several lists, we apologize for any duplication. Please feel free to re-post. ***************************************************************** SENATE PASSES ANTI-GAY INITIATIVE ACTION NEEDED Supporters of intellectual freedom were stunned when, during Senate floor debate on reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Senate adopted on August 1 and 2 an amendment developed by Senator Robert C. Smith (R-NH) and Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC). The amendment would provide that no local educational agency receiving funds under the Improving America's Schools Act (HR 6) "shall implement or carry out a program or activity that has either the purpose or effect of encouraging or supporting homosexuality as a positive lifestyle alternative." The definition of program or activity, for purposes of the amendment, "includes the distribution of instructional materials, instruction, counseling, or other services on school grounds, or referral of a pupil to an organization that affirms a homosexual lifestyle." The language of the amendment is vague enough to impact even neutral instructional and library materials on sex education and sexuality, because the mere provision of information is often interpreted to "have the effect of encouraging" or endorsing the subject matter of the information. Thus, the amendment could have a serious impact on school sex education curricula and a broad array of school library materials. In addition, once the precedent is established, all controversial subjects become fair game for threats of funding cuts in both the school and public library setting. The amendment's denial of federal funds to school counseling programs for gay teens is particularly disturbing in light of some studies which suggest that gay teens are at three times greater risk for suicide. The next step for the bill is the joint House/Senate Conference Committee. It is OIF's understanding, although we have not been able to confirm the actual language, that a similar but not identical measure had previously been passed by the House. Thus, the fate of all amendments must be decided in the conference committee. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee Chair Edward Kennedy (D-MA), the manager of the Senate version of HR 6, engaged in enough parliamentary maneuvering to give him standing to remove this language in the House-Senate conference on HR 6. Action is needed NOW to inform Congress of the potential devastating effects of this amendment on school library collections, and the horrible precedent the amendment sets for publicly funded information services generally. To assist in the removal of this language, library constituents should contact Senate conferees immediately. The message: Remove the Smith-Helms amendment in the House-Senate conference on HR 6.
