Went to two nights of Jewel's live album taping, which was also really cool. The second night, she hit a number of songs perfectly. I bet they end up on the album for sure (particularly since in the 15 or so times I've seen her sing "Sometimes it be that way", this is only the second where she has gotten all the words right). Then suddenly the opportunity, means, and motive presented themselves in quick succession and there I was - and very glad to be there, too. I was not quite ready to leave and come home... there were lots of musical events going on, all of which I missed: the Sound Symposium in St John's, and folk festivals in just about every major fishing port around the island. Celtic-influenced folk music is well and thriving in Newfoundland: think of Figgy Duff, and the dozens of other musicians we never hear of but whose tapes can be found at Fred's (record store) in St John's. One event I didn't miss was a party hosted by someone with a very interesting cd collection. Much of what he had corresponded to my own collection; much of the remainder was music that I had heard of but had never listened to, including stacks of Ecto-recommendations. I was finally able to get a copy of the exceedingly beautiful album _The Colour of Amber_, by Anita Best and Pamela Morgan (lead vocalist of Figgy Duff). It was released in late 1991 and was actually available across Canada for a short time, but I forgot (?!) to buy a copy and it disappeared from the stores. Not in St John's, though! It is still available to Canadian record stores through Denon Canada in Toronto, or you can mail-order from Fred's (address on request; I don't have it with me). The music is akin to both Figgy Duff and Loreena McKennitt, gentle, lively. justin ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 1 Aug 94 19:45:06 PDT From: jeffw@triple-i.com (Jeff Wasilko) Subject: Happy concert update #3 Hi folks! What's known today as 'alternative' music is oftentimes serious business using major labels and major distribution support, with exposure on MTV and such. What people once heard as a new form of expression was fast recycled by the industry. True freedom of expression doesn't lies in only believing this state is finally achieved while repeating what's been told to us like computerized telephony systems. Worth of mention is the "Secret World" upcoming video. (No date of release yet - perhaps theatres first). I've seen the world premiere last month here in Montreal at an outdoor showing on St-Laurent street (first time it was entirely shown from start to finish). Youssou N'Dour was also there to see it. Thunder and rain also, but nothing to move people away from the movie, although there was the possibility of terminating the presentation if the thunder was to become very bad, due to technical considerations. But people cheered at thunder flashes, who seemingly and mysteriously were in sync with some events in the movie. "Secret World", as the rest of this Peter Gabriel world tour, is, in its own right a Quebecois (or French Canadian if you prefer) production. Filmmaker Francois Girard attented 19 concerts in order to get on film the creative stage conception by comedian, playwright and nouveau-filmmaker Robert Lepage, set to the lighting elaborations of Alain Lortie, of this quite impressive Peter Gabriel tour. Pink Floyd, move away, this is lively as far as big concerts are concerned. This concert movie relies only on what happened on stage, contrary to Martin Scorcese's "POV", the previous Gabriel concert movie. Girard had special feeds for the cameras, so we get a real close-up view of the tiny CCD camera used in "Digging in the Dirt" and also a breath-taking scenic view from a camera that was placed right on top of the gigantic rotating video screen. >From the opening lines of "Come Talk to Me" right to the end of the show the movie takes the audience into a close-up and artistic report of the concert. You see people breathe in there. Highly recommended. Unrelated, technical P.S.: I get these DAEMONS replies each time I write something in Ecto. Daemons after me. A line from this song is "The living flesh is beliefs dancing into this world", and this could very well be a very brief but accurate summary of Jane's book up to the chapter I mentioned. What I would like to know is if Mitch is familiar with Jane's writings... maybe someone (Vickie, Bob) could ask the next time they have contact with Aural Gratification. Someone mentioned Jane Roberts to me after I had posted my latest ideas on the subject of reality creation to comp.ai.philosophy. I came across her book in a Californian bookstore. Jane is not the author of her books. She produced the texts by going into a trance and tuning in to an entity named Seth. In the book, Seth puts forth his idea that one creates one's own reality through one's beliefs. This is something I agree with, and it feels good to see my ideas corroborated by an independent source. For those who wonder why this is relevant for Ecto... Mitch Elrod's Swim Team is on the same label as Happy (Aural Gratification), and Happy painted the cover artwork for their CD. Mitch also does some vocals on "Wrong Century", from Happy's album _Warpaint_. She also noted that one of the main benefits of her husband being her producer was his ability to reach high shelves in the studio easily. The cover of the current issue of _Tennis_ magazine touts "What You Can Learn From [Steffi] Graf's Serve/Forehand/Backhand/Footwork."
