I saw Jonathan Richman last fall at Raji's Bar in Hollywood, and it was one of the best small club shows I've ever seen. One man, a guitar, and a guy off to the side doing drum fills. And it still rocked. "Pablo Picasso" as performed by Burning Sensations (perhaps remembered for "Belly of the Whale") appears in the scene in which Emilio Estevez is driving his car and knocks over the garbage cans on the curb trying to impress whoever the woman in that was, then the old lady comes out and harangues him. And for a quick laugh for JR fans, check out "Frequency" on the Jesus and Mary Chain album "Honey's Dead". I'm glad we did, though >we still want to see the other two movies. Something not exactly like that, but something like it, happened to me over the weekend. I originally had planned to spend a long Saturday catching both _Equinox_ and _Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me_ at the Music Box, inasmuch as both were reportedly in their final week. I then heard a discussion on WBEZ of the upcoming Bughouse Square Debates, a commemoration of Chicago's original hot spot for soapbox orators featuring a smorgasbord of efforts to revive that un- fortunately all-too-dormant art form. I finally decided to split the differen- ce and forego _Equinox_ on the theory that a new Alan Rudolph film had a good chance of being picked up by another art house, and catch at least some of the soapbox festivities and then proceed to catch the other feature. Prior to the beginning of the orations, the crowd was being warmed up by a folksinger who was running long. Adjacent to me as I ate an overpriced chicken teriaki sandich and lemonade, one of the managers of the event was comiserating with the master of ceremonies, a legendary former Chicago alderman who happens also to be an old family friend, about what to do. I mentioned, though I prob- ably went unheard through the sense of a minor crisis, that during the MC's time in the city council, the mayor at the time used to simply shut off the microphones of aldermen whose ideas he wanted to squelch; maybe it would work again. Only later did it occur to me that an equally efficacious solution would have been simply to turn the hecklers loose on the overlong chanteur; afterall, what is soapbox oratory without hecklers? Somehow, the problem played itself out anyway, and the orators got underway--three at once. I became absorbed in the free-fire zone of ideas, and decided to eschew the cinema altogether in favor of sticking around for the final event, Studs Terkel debating "The 60s: Dream or Nightmare?" Studs was a few minutes late, and the management filled the dead air with the saga of Jack Jones, an ex-Wobbly activist who founded the Dill Pickle Club down the street from Bughouse Square, as a haven for ideas and entertainment that had trouble finding a commercial niche in the mass market. (Would have been the ideal venue for Happy, IMHO WIVH.) Over the years, Jack was arrested 150 times for not having a club license; the club, along with the classic ambi- ence of Bughouse Square, finally declined and fell in the post-WWII years. Finally, Studs arrived, and the debate began with a local conservative activist who argued that today's problems began with the liberal programs of the 60s. Studs countered that, among other things, the 60s were characterized by a cli- mate of hope and societal compassion unparalleled since; he carried the day against both his opponent, and a heckler in the crowd. Finally the MC was elected, by acclamation, the new mayor of Bughouse square, an informal status once occupied by the late, legendary One-armed Charlie. Then it all broke up, and all that was left was a few nodes of people expounding on outre ideas, most notably that the management of the festival just ended had excluded outre ideas from the program. I went away wondering whether, in effect, the Internet has become the new Bughouse Square. I'm still wondering when I'll get to see eith- er of the flicks I forwent, but I have no regrets about making the choice that I did. Free speech can be fun :-). WRT Dave's continuing quest for Happy Music (as opposed to Happy's music, which if generally much better stuff, but that's neither here nor there): Late Sat- urday night, after catching back-to-back performances by Mary-Chapin Carpenter and k.d. lang on Channel 11, I turned to the last half of the video show on Channel 50. Right after they did the video of Bjork's "Human Behaviour," they ran a video of a forgettable song called Happy somethingorother, by a forgett- able band whose name I've forgotten already. I tried to make a mental note about it for Dave's benefit, but soon forgot it all anyway. I'm not sure what the point is of Bjork's video, in which she is successively chased by a moth and eaten by a bear. The bit about the moth reminds me of how while listening to the soapbox orators, a couple of butterflies went fluttering through the crowd, leading me towomder if this was their answer to the Air and Water Show that was going on simultaneously over at the beach a few blocks to the east. Eventually, the planes from the real thing started flying over Bughouse Square, bringing their jet noise with them, leading me to conclude that the homegrown version was easier on the ears :-). Woj's saga of how they spirited Chris out of Joisey reminded me, for some un- kown reason, of the closest I've ever gotten to there. The year was 1980, it was my first trip to NYC, and I was exploring Lower Manhattan when I found out that fromn where I was standing, I could see the sign on the old Colgate facto- ry in Jersey City. When I passed by a nearby PATH station, I thought of hopp- ing the aforesaid train and exploring the area I'd just seen over the river, but decided against it. I'm not certain whether or not I really missed any- thing; that wasn't even my normal brand of toothpaste being advertised :-). Check out the debate that's lately going on on the opinion page of _Billboard_ on used CD's. It will help you to recognize inane arguments when you see them. Another AG newsletter already? Makes me wonder how good my mail service really is; so far I haven't seen it. In fact, most of the recommendations I've been getting from folks here are outside either my or my g/f's record collection. Perhaps when Angelos arrives this week I can plunder his rack. Speaking of my g/f, Emily.. this has been one not-so-nice month for her. Her apartment was broken into, and among the items taken were: her stereo, her VCR, her TV, her Macintosh, her vacuum cleaner (which she just spent $15 to fix), her microwave, her food processer, basically anything you can plug into the wall. They also stole a bag of compost and some pots, for WHAT I can't imagine. They also didn't take one stereo speaker, or any of the attachments for the vacuum or the food processor. Last week, her CAR was broken into... WHY I can't understand; she has a detachable faceplate type stereo, which is useless unless you have the faceplate. They couldn't get the stereo out, but they banged it up enough so that she had to buy a new one (and she's not rich). They also stole her adapters. Last week she found out her mother had a brain tumor the size of a golf ball... The operation went well, though, and Emily's visiting her this week. While she's gone, however, she's passed her curse onto me.. someone tried to steal my scooter yesterday, dinging up the ignition lock a bit. They didn't succeed (thank goodness for Kryptonite locks!) but I'm getting more worried about this new neighborhood I've moved into. It looks yuppie on the surface, but only four blocks away it's near-slum. Ack. Well, enough griping. I got two cool packages in the mail today. One, of course, was the much-heralded Happy Birthday Project, which I'm listening to at the moment. Dirk Kastens, I want your equipment! I love those string pads! If I can't have the equipment, at least give me the MIDI files. The other package I got is "negativconcertland", a live recording from their recent tour. $5 for each purchase goes directly to their legal defense fund. I saw the concert in San Fran, and it was one of the most entertaining nights I've had in QUITE some time. It's copyright- free, too, so if anyone wants a dub, or wants the address to order one of their own, let me know. D^2 That's the letter D and the numeral 2.
