I haven't seen the film (with James Spader), but the book was written by Paul Auster - by far my favourite author! Then TMOC is certainly my favourite book! If you like reading, I can only recommend it to everybody. Paul Auster is in his forties and he wrote 6 novels. He got reasonably famous with the "New York Trilogy", but I don't particularly like that one. He also wrote one sort of auto-biography, mainly about his feelings when his father died. It's very well written, but I think it's only interesting if you al- ready read another book by him before. He also wrote quite a bit of poetry, essays and he did translations from French into English. ..enough of that.. I visited every one of them!! I managed to buy 30 CDs in the first two days of my visit and ended up with a total of 52 for the week. Is this a record? I don't think I could ever browse a CD store again. I'm totally shopped-out. tim PS If you want to meet the rudest people in America (they stand out even more so since every one else was *so* nice), try the Looney Tunes store in Boston. ======================================================================== From: jk101920@ee.tut.fi (Kannisto Juha) Subject: Whatever Date: Mon, 23 Aug 93 17:13:26 EET DST Hei all :) I just received Ecto and HR5 today and out of happiness had to share this information with everyone :) The custom department tried to make me pay some customs (isn't it something, you have to pay customs if you receive something by mail that's worth some 33 $ or more, postage counts as well). I got my discs without paying anything, but it was close! Sometimes these people refuse to believe what you tell them, but this time I had the luck of dealing with a nice person. And I must admit that I'm very much against paying customs for little things like these. I guess I'd better order the remaining discs one by one. I didn't know a thing about these two additional songs on Ecto! 'Look for the Child' and 'When the Rain Came Down', I'm so eager to get this cd dubbed so I can hear them! My old dub of Ecto didn't have these songs on it. Ilka, I like Paul Auster too! I've only read 'Moon Palace' and 'The New York Trilogy' so far though. Did anyone else manage to see the video for Bjork's 'Venus as a Boy' already? How did you like it? I thought it was quite different, but very interesting. I was lucky enough to get it taped too :) I must say that I think I'm growing tired of 'Debut' though, slowly. Whenever you're instantly smitten with some music, it doesn't often last for as long as you'd like. Music that takes time to grow in you is often the most satisfying in the end. For a Costume competition, I am going to use ECTO as my inspiriation, and music selection { never guess I like the song, huh?} Anyway; what I am in need of is one of the following skills: (a) someone who can make a clean, professional sounding 'chop' of _ECTO_ from time mark 2:20 to 3:41. =or= (b) sheet music. since i haven't got the hardware to make a clean chop, I've been doing some transcribing, I have: () the first part of the bass line () the primary background chords () the ethereal "ec-to" () happy's deep lament which overlays the "ec-to" line () percussion line what i could really use is: () the rest of the bass line () the wailing guitar line () some of the filler plus, if we can get this all transcribed, then we can send it to Happy, since she doesn't read music. If you can help- either in editing or transcribing, pop me a line at: tjshadb@ecto.ca.sandia.gov or send it to the mailing list for everyone. plus, i promise to send a video of the final production to (probably) Vickie so others can see it. Thanks a bunch - Troy PS: does anyone else think that Vickie should just sit around and tell stories in front of a fire from now on? :-) ******************************************************************************** Troy J. Once again I humbly beg someone to keep me up to date with the latest Happy-related goings on (new releases mainly - tour dates I guess I can live without, unless she ever makes it over to England on her world tour!). To ^^^^^^^ Private? That's exactly the term we use for commercial stations. Privatfernsehen & Privatsender & Privatradio. > explain, these stations are basically funded by the public but > run by the state- for US ectophiles, that would be like NPR being > taken over and run by the FCC (which is unconstitutional in this > country, of course, but not in Germany). They are not allowed > to have more than 20 minutes per day of paid advertisements (does > this apply to TV only?), and their funding comes from the annual > licensing fees people pay for every TV and radio in their > household (this includes Walkmen and car radios). Hmmm... is it really only 20 minutes? I can't believe that. They surely do more than that, but there really is a limit. There are more important limits with respect to advertising: nothing past 8pm, nothing on Sundays. And that holds for TV and radio stations. The fees are about 20 to 25 DM (don't know, living at home my parents pay it) per month. BTW: If you have a business car with a radio you have to pay twice... I don't think the public (let's call them this way) make enough money from the fees & advertisings. I think the government pays more. And, btw., these stations have a 'quest': they have to bring a minimum of culture to its listeners. No idea how this is defined, but they would certainly not be allowed to act as a movie-only station, or a video-clip-only station. News is I think a bit part of this, and in fact the two big German public TV stations, ARD and ZDF, have some of the best news services in the world. Bye, Uli P.S.: As far as I know, the BBC is also 'oeffentlich-rechtlich'. ======================================================================== Date: 23 Aug 93 15:09:07 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: MacArthur's Park Revisited :-) Well, I'm glad to know some people like or dislike this song, but so far I have not gotten any closer to discovering its TRUE MEANING. Come on guys, let's go! To the person who said they knew the lyrics: could you mail them to me (or post to ecto if not too long). Thanks. I believe the story is true, but I don't know what it is. (BTW, I don't mind the song, though it's not in my top 20000.) -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Aug 93 13:25:37 PDT From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: ** of ** Vickie: I saw "Visions of Light" not long ago myself. I thought it was quite interesting. I really liked how it made you step back and look at these scenes from movies in a different way. I know the cinemetography can affect me, but by and large I don't think about it often, and if I do there is usually something wrong with the movie to make me forget about what's going on and look at something else, although sometimes it just means that the something else really was spectacular, like the use (and absence) of sound in "Un Coer ?? Hivre. The most magical moment for me was that part from "In Cold Blood", which I've never seen, where the rain is reflected on the convicts face. That was just amazing! and an accident too!!! (What was hard for me to believe was how poorly put together the movie was. Choppy cuts between clips and talking heads abounded, and in a celebration of moviemaking no less.) "Music of Chance" - I didn't actually get to see. Starred James Spader with really bad facial hair and someone I can't recall. JS is a gambler and the other guy is conned into using his life savings to finance a big poker game between JS and some rich guys, but things go awry. It got decent reviews, but didn't stick around long here. Oh, I actually liked the computer graphics in House of Cards, I just didn't think it was realistically done or had any reason to be there. Gratuitous virtual reality, appearing in all films next year?
