Hecko, The AG newsletter arrived, and with it the definative spelling of the upcoming album: RhodeSongs. Definately much better than Rhodes Songs, though I guess I'm still fond of Back Rhodes. Well, as I write this Chris Boek should be well out over the Atlantic (isn't that a major label?). It was great having him visit, and he mentioned that he's probably met more ectophiles this trip than any other ectophiles. He is quite witty; my favorite came as we were driving up to Casa de Footah this morning. There was a sign that said "No Trucks in Left Lane", and he marvelled at the intelligence of the sign to notice that. Today I met the infamous Meth@aol.com, as she was with woj as I dropped Chris off. Having just missed a Tribe concert the previous night, Greg was still asleep. But we played with many of his nifty musical toys. You haven't lived till you try playing a bass with an E-bow! Anyhow, it was great to finally meet Meredith, and though my stay was short, it made ecto a lot more human. It's nice to be able to visualize the people who are out there! Regarding _happy_ lyrics, how about Mungo Jerry's only hit, "In the Summertime" (yes we're hap-happy!). I'm sure the turtles Happy Together has been covered, but it's worth noting that The Mothers of Invention covered that song (when Mark & Howard were affiliated with Zappa). Rolling Stones Exile on Main St. has a song called Happy. There must be a ton of happiness out there. I'll be checking back later. Till then, have fun and be good. After then, perhaps all heck will break loose. If so, we can fix it in post. (aside: do *you* know what klm stands for? needless to say, i have forgotten.) it was a short line and we were quickly to the counter where we discovered that the new york-amsterdam ticket had been pulled by an over-zealous, idiotic northwest employee instead of the detroit-new york ticket when he had flown into lovely newark airport last friday. we had to go to the ticket window (aptly titled) to straighten things out. fortunately they were and chris was vindicated. not to mention relieved of his 23 kilo suitcase. we then walked up to the gate and left him to his own devices, but not before getting a wonderful photograph of him (and him getting a wonderful photograph of us in our natural state - with my tongue sticking out). and thus the saga comes to an end. the first true test of the ectohostel support system sounds as if it was an unqualified success. tips o'the hats to all involved and a hearty thank you from chris whom we shall hope to hear from soon as he secures net.access in the benelux (which, by the way, has a cool looking visa). +woj ps. we tried to convince chris to print up "chris boek world tour" t-shirts and perhaps he shall.... ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 22 Aug 93 14:08:17 -0500 From: "Dennis G Parslow" Subject: Re: Ectoform? Think Tree ======================================================================== From: David Koehler Subject: Breeders single review Date: Sun, 22 Aug 93 16:09:00 PDT Hello all, The Bangles From Hell (a.k.a. The Breeders) are back with a new single and an album due August 31. The single is called "Cannonball" and contains the following tracks: 1. Cannonball (Kim Deal) 2. Cro-Aloha (Kim Deal) 3. Lord of the Thighs (S. Tyler) 4. 900 (Josephine Wiggs) The Breeders were formed before the arrival of the Pixies and temporarily disbanded when Kim Deal left her twin sister, Kelly, to play bass and sing backing vocals for the Pixies. The Breeders then regrouped (sorry, I don't have exact dates handy) and released a stunning debut ("Pod") with Kim and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Belly) on guitar, Josephine Wiggs on bass, and a male drummer (who seems to vary with each recording and tour). No mention of Kelly Deal here, but she came back on the "Safari" single which was released 1 or 2 years ago. The new lineup has dropped Tanya Donelly, who is no doubt now concentrating her efforts on Belly. The Cannonball single seems to indicate a significant change in The Breeders' sound from the previous two releases. The most obvious change is the abscence of Tanya Donelly's guitar playing. While Kim Deal is a very good bass player, and benefited the Pixies with her melodic style, her electric guitar isn't quite up to the standard set by Tanya on their earlier stuff. Also new is the use of electronic distortion on Kim's vocals (tracks 1 and 2) and the lack of plucked and strummed acoustic guitar in the arrangements. These last two changes give the music a hard "edge" that was previously achieved on "Pod" not electronically, but with sheer gusto. Despite these changes (or maybe because of them!) the song "Cannonball" is a very strong single that I think will do well on commercial "alternative" radio. It is aggressive and loud, but has nice hooks and I find myself humming it occasionally. This is the style used sucessfully by the Pixies, Sugar, Nirvana, and dozens of other guitar-driven-hard-alternative bands. The three b-sides are not up to the quality of the single, but they're only b-sides after all. "Cro-Aloha" is a hard rocker with heavily distorted guitars and vocals (Kim). "Lord of the Thighs" is an Aerosmith tune sung here by Josephine. I've not heard the Aerosmith version, but I get the feeling they didn't have much to work with. The last tune "900" is a bit more interesting. Written and sung by Josephine, it waltzes along in slow 9/8 time and features some nice cello and violin accompanyment. Wow, I love it! I was hesitant to buy it, even marked down, because the first time I heard MSG was as the opening act for Einsturzende Neubauten and I was not too impressed. The concert started 2.5 hours late so I was really annoyed to begin with, and I was psyched to see grown men screaming and whacking bits of metal, :-) so I don't suppose *any* opening act would have worked for me at that point. MSG just seemed to be repetitive and their 6 song set suffered from a sameness in the music that became tedious. However, this single really impressed me so I want to get one of their albums. The single is from the album "Suspiria". Is this a good one to get? Thanks, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- David R.
