I also realised that this post is probably the first time I'd ever had to type the word 'idiosyncrasy' and thus had little idea how to spell it until I had consulted a dictionary. But I digress. Happpy Birthday Martin, who I hope reads this. Martin was instrumental in my in depth involvement in ecto, by welcoming me as the only other Australian that he was aware of at the time, and also made me a sampler that was the first instance of Happy that I heard. Thus was history made, as I cerainly wouldn';t be typing this message from Anthony Kosky's PC in Philadelphia were it not to have been thus. So it is that I've met many US ectophiles, but haven't met Martin who is Australian, or even Anthony H who lives in Melbourne. Oh well. Perhpas this situation should be remedied upon my return ... If you ever decide (for some unfathomable reason) to take a trip to New Haven, Connecticut, make sure you plan it for the third week in August. It's the only time this place is alive. Besides the Volvo Tennis Tournament (one of the tune-ups for the US Open on the men's tour), there is the Miller (formerly the Molson :) Street Festival. For nine days, downtown New Haven is actually a fun place to be. An 8-block area is closed to traffic, and literally every restaurant in town opens a booth, the stores along the way move out onto the sidewalks, and there are roving performers and four stages set up for continuous musical entertainment. When I went this evening, while walking three blocks I passed a folk-pop quartet called The Who's Whos on one stage, a great funk band whose name I didn't catch on another, and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra Brass Quartet on the third (unfortunately, they were almost drowned out by the funk band). I ate a *great* gyro, and some killer pastry- the food isn't only plentiful, it's cheap! (Unfortunately, the beer garden only serves Miller Lite. :P) There were lots of people there, representing the diversity of the New Haven population, from poor minority families to Yale students and professors to high school kids to whatever. Even the homeless people who panhandle the area were having a good time. And the music, 100% local talent, was wonderful. It goes on until Sunday- I'm only sorry I'll be away this weekend, I'd like to catch some more of the bands. On my way back home I stopped by the Sam Goody, which is located just outside the area roped off for the festival, to see if they have Rhodes Songs scheduled to come in next week. When I asked the sales guy, a sales girl nearby overheard and came over, saying "Ooh, she has something new coming out? I had no idea- that's great!" She looked over his shoulder as he paged through the New Releases book ("Is that on Aural Gratification?"), and when she noticed that it was marked N/I (No Information on whether the store would be getting it in) she said, "Well, I'm going to make sure we definitely get it in." I almost died. Not only a clueful national chain music store employee, but one who is into Happy, as well! (Although I must say, for a chain store - and a Sam Goody in particular- this one has the most clueful employees I've ever seen. They not only listen to music, they pay attention!) So, all you folk in the New Haven area, the Sam Goody on Chapel St. will most probably have it in by the 31st, if not on the 24th. Too bad the street festival will be over then, or you could stop by there on your way. Before I go, Uli wondered: }('Oeffentlich-rechtliche Sender', what's the proper English word }for this?). There's no real English translation, the closest one could come would be "Public/Private", which is of course an oxymoron. To explain, these stations are basically funded by the public but run by the state- for US ectophiles, that would be like NPR being taken over and run by the FCC (which is unconstitutional in this country, of course, but not in Germany). They are not allowed to have more than 20 minutes per day of paid advertisements (does this apply to TV only?), and their funding comes from the annual licensing fees people pay for every TV and radio in their household (this includes Walkmen and car radios). (Almost three years ago now, I sat in a stuffy classroom at the University of Munich and got all this painstakingly explained to me by our well-meaning German instructor during our first week of orientation in Germany. At the time, I wondered if it would ever come in handy... :) I believe this is how the BBC works in the UK- is that right? Not being an MS-DOS guru I can't speak for anybody's setup but my own. The incompatibility that I suffer from is that under v3.1 I can no longer get wingif to convert gifs into bmps. I thought that this might be the same problem that mjm was having, maybe not. Ob. Well, not quite. The BBC is certainly funded from a licence fee payable by every TV (not radio any longer, though it used to be) user. The exception to this is the BBC World Service which is directly funded through the Foreign Office (a government department). However to say that the BBC is run by the state is not quite accurate. The BBC is independantly constituted and in theory has editorial independance from the government of the day. The fact that they seem to manage to convince all (well, both) shades of government that they actually back the opposition seems to indicate that some form of independance does exist. *** Warning! Politically biased views ahead. *** Indeed the BBC has in fairly recent history been much more left wing in its views than the government (even when Labour were in power), but its exposure to market forces imposed by TBW (aka The Blue Witch or That B****y Woman) and her greyer than grey successor has made it much more conservative (with a small 'c') than it used to be and it became much less likely to openly criticise the government. The impending Charter (the formal document that constitutes the BBC and sets out its purpose, funding, and top-level organisation) renewal in 1996 has opened a great debate about how the Beeb ought to be funded, and led to it being very careful not to upset the powers that be. Personally, I am a great fan of the publically funded, politically independant, public service oriented Auntie of old but I can see the writing on the wall that the cash savings to be made by making the BBC take advertising and not get any public money will lead to a massive lurch downmarket, a lowering of standards, and an end to the excellence that the Beeb often (though by no means always) strives for. Boo! Hiss!! *** End of political tirade. I'll get back to work now! *** -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers.
