(Karl, have you been there?) It featured live performances by Youssou N'Dour, Yothu Yindi, Chuck Berry, and Chris de Burgh. But the sensation was the project Harmonia Mundi by Eberhard Schoener, a live performance via satellite, where musicians from five continents very playing together simultaniously. Schoener needed one year to prepare the project. The greatest problem was the time difference in the satellite broadcast from the different parts of the world. The music had a very simple structure, harmonically and rhythmically and the performance was rather short. Sometimes one could think that it doesn't matter what they were playing, but some parts were very impressive. The greatest problem, as Schoener said, has been the technical solution, to establish four satellite connections at the same time. Everyone seems agreed that it is 128.6.18.2. Unfortunately I still couldn't connect, even with this information. I suspect the gateway machine here won't permit international IP connections outside of the NT/BNR community. Anyway... All is not lost because Jeff very kindly send me Email versions of the two Ectoform gifs I was looking for. It's really neat. Happy must have been delighted to receive such a present. Perhaps in due course we'll be able to add a picture of Happy and the Ectoform to the archives :-) On the subject of uuencoded stuff being posted to the list, from my selfish point of view I'm all in favour of it because it's the easiest way for me to get such things. But I do appreciate that the digest folks would find it a pain to have these mixed up with regular messages. It can't be much fun wading through umpteen screens full of uuencode output. Perhaps such submissions could be put in separate digests. One final point. In passing Jeff mentioned that he has yet to break even financially on the Ectofrom project. It would be unfortunate if he were left out of pocket because he only proceeded on the basis of promises from Ectophiles to contribute enough to cover his costs. So, if you intended to contribute but haven't yet done so, please send Jeff a small contribution. He deserves it, he's really done us proud! -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. Subject: Crazy Cover art and the like.. I've been going through my mail and reading the thoughts on Happy Rhodes' album covers and have decided to jump in (a little bit late)..:-) Equipoise was the first album I bought of hers...and I hadn't even heard one song from her at that point! I bought based purely on information from this group and on love-hounds. In fact, I was extremely excited to find anything by her in Buffalo. I was given the choice between Equipoise and Warpaint and chose the former because it looked more interesting to me.:-) Now, I'm not into heavy metal or speed metal but I found the cover to be an interesting contrast. As for her other albums, I really like the covers of Ecto, Rhodes 1 and Rhodes 2. Maybe because they are intense and a little scary. I do understand the points being made about the commercial potential of her work based on misconceptions of her music based on the covers. When I bought Rhodes 1 I was with a friend who put their selection on top of mine at the counter because my selection was "too scary". heh. I have also had comments that it looks like heavy metal music. One person remarked.."the cover doesn't match the music". On the other hand, I lent Rhodes 1 to someone who had expressed an interest in borrowing something of mine and his reaction on receiving the cd was a startled look and then the exclamation "cool!" I've passed along all her work for him to listen to and he has been very impressed... the covers seem to have made little difference in his appreciation of her music.. I think that perhaps that with most things, what would help Happy Rhodes to become more "popular", so to speak, is not so much a change in her style but a change in marketing. I mean...I have never heard one of her songs on the radio! no one I know has ever heard of her except for people I introduce to her! I realize it can't be helped and that it is difficult to arrange these things but I do believe that if she was played more, promoted more, that things would change. I hope that Rhodes' Songs will do it. I know that I am definitely going down to the record store to request it! -Quenby lurker mode down with a vengeance... ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: Ecto Support System Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1993 01:33:09 +1000 (EST) I have just read, with great amusement, the kind of amusement that can only be enjoyed in hindsight :), the stories of Vickie and Meredith of the 'Lost in Newark' saga. We shall see what transpires. I am planning to go see the Otters at Schuba's tomorrow night, Mitch. That's Belmont and Southport at 9:30pm. You should come and talk to Stuart in person. Also, the Otters are a blast. I was thinking of giving him some Happy Rhodes thing. Actually, HE should be sent HR-5 more than any other station in Chicago. I'm sure he would play it given the scope of the stuff he played in 2 hours! He purports the Earth Show to offer the greatest range of different music on the planet, or something like that. It's a neat show that I usually never get to hear. Woj mentioned that Moxy's music is routed in humour. I think I would say that alot of their songs are humorous, but they also have some very poignant lyrics and meaningful messages that are very serious; more so, say, than other gimmicky bands (like TMBG or 3M3). Also, what impresses me with the CD is that the vocals are very smooth and the song-writing is real catchy. I love the harmonies and the offbeat Canadian understated sublety. Woj, you should definitely getta hold of the CD. My friend played some Barenaked Ladies too and I was not as impressed either. -mjm "Baseball's a simple game...
