W & K are basically used to mean USA, gennerally east or west. Canadian stations start with a C, Mexican with X. It was all laid out in some international agreement decades ago. As for the rest of the call signs, some make sense and some do not. I once worked for a TV station called WBNB. Turned out that BNB referred to the owners, two guys named Bob. In NYC, network owned stations have calls like WCBS, WNBC, WABC...in California, the same networks own KCBS, KNBC, and KABC. Call letters are available on a first come, first served basis from the Federal Communications Commission, so the station owner supplies a list of call signs in the order desired, and they get the first available sign on the list. Some make sense only to the owners, others are obvious. Hope this helps! Bob the RadioMan ======================================================================== From: Tim Breitkreutz Subject: IRC vs. ICB Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1993 19:55:24 -0600 Correct me if I'm wrong, Jessica, but I think the big advantage of IRC over ICB is that with ICB you have to pick a server. With IRC they seem to all talk to each other. Also, I get the impression that IRC has a bigger following (I know, it's not a great reason to use it--after all, look at the IBM PC world). Alan told me something about another system called clover which is also distributed, maybe we can try that out? With IRC they seem > to all talk to each other. I consider that the *problem* with IRC. unfortunately ICB isn't fully developed yet (probably will never be becuase i've got a much better idea), but if it were, it would be a multi-server environment, so you would not be dependent on a particular server. You don't have to choose a server - if you just compile the code as given, you'll get a default server built in (mine), and you can also have a .icbservrc file with servers listed in order of preference. > Also, I get the impression that IRC has > a bigger following (I know, it's not a great reason to use it--after all, > look at the IBM PC world). I have to agree that's not a good reason..... I have many personal problems with both the IRC environment and the IRC software itself. Obviously, if people's intent to is to use a chat server where they can hop on and join several discussions, then it's silly to suggest icb (certainly my server anyway. You could try the server at crater.unm.edu. It usually has about 40 people on.) But if a bunch of ectophiles would simply like to be able to chat, interactively, on-line, they may find that ICB provides a nicer interface and facility for doing so. Also, someone on the list mentioned that have difficulty accessing the machine they can use IRC on - a lot of sysadmins don't like their users to run IRC servers. Few sysadmins have problems with an icb client - it doesn't *do* much, doesn't take up CPU or memory.. > Alan told me something about another system called clover which is > also distributed, maybe we can try that out? > Tim Hmm I haven't heard of clover.. i'd be interested in checking it out. jessica ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 12 Aug 93 23:15:32 EDT From: jessica Subject: not much You know, I can't find my Equipoise.. and while I do think I like Warpaint better overall, it is driving nuts that I can't find Equipoise. We've already been over the W and K business... but some of the call letters do make perfect sense, and it's always been sort of a game of mine to try and figure out what they stand for. For example, WTOS in Skowhegan, Maine has its tower on top of Sugarloaf Mountain, so their letters stand for Top Of Sugarloaf. WLAM, in Lewiston-Auburn, Maine is also easy: Lewiston-Auburn Music. WTNH here in New Haven stands for Television New Haven. And of course, WESU is easy, being located at Wesleyan University. :) Others aren't so obvious... WPKN in Bridgeport has always been a mystery. Pretty Kwirky Noise? I dunno. }Radio stations in Germany have 'better' (well...) names. Yeah, Radio Xanadu in Munich is my personal fave. :) }Or you can have stations with really proper names, as for }example Antenne Bayern or Starsat Radio. Where is Starsat out of? I saw ads for it all over the place in Germany, but never could figure out where the station was located. I also liked Radio Welle ("Welle" = Wave). Cool name. :) Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1993 23:18:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: Music ads of note Hi! I finally got to open my new issue of the Utne Reader today (bi-monthly magazine compiled from "the best of the alternative press"), and what did I find on Page 13 but a quarter-page ad for _When I Was A Boy_. It's the album cover, with the title and such over it, and I *love* the ad slogan: "This isn't her best record ever. It's merely the best so far." :) Also of interest was another ad further in, for an album by someone (purported to be a Canadian singer/songwriter) named Jann Arden, called _Time For Mercy_. There's an 800 number to call to get a free sampler of her stuff... anybody out there heard of her? I'm going to call and see if I can get one anyway (no, I won't give out the number until I've called- they say supplies are limited, and I'm feeling selfish this evening), but I'd like to know what I'm in for, if anyone has information to that effect.
