Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 Aug 93 2:55:43 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Byeznhis It's been a day for departures and arrivals...in the afternoon I saw Christo off on his trip up to visit old family friends in Wisconson (he took a Greyhound bus to Eau Claire and will be back Thursday afternoon) and in the evening I L'ed out to O'Hare Airport to pick up my son Adrian. (No, I didn't make him ride the People Mover with me, and he's seen the Cool Thing before). We stopped and ate and then went to see _Like Water For Chocolate_ (finally!) which I thought he'd be interested in since he's majoring in Spanish *and* Film. The man say "4 1/2 stars!" I agree, and I had to rely on the subtitles (he didn't) which is fine, because I hate dubbed movies. I only had one problem with it, well, two...one technical (some of the edits were too abrupt) and one with the script (which I won't mention because it might be a spoiler) but all in all, I liked it and I'm glad I finally got around to seeing it. BobL, thanks for offering to send brni messages. Mine's on the way to you. Mitch, thanks for the nice rundown of the festivities Saturday. Steve VanD, thank you for calling too! (so the e at the end is completely silent, ay?) You wrote: >It sounds like Mitch could add a couple of songs to the Canadian sampler. >Anyone else want to pick up on a couple? Beth? Tim? I could contribute a few things here. E.g. Harmonium, Moxy Fruvous (which my friend just brought me from T-O: I would describe them as They Might Be Giants meet The 3 Mustaphas meet The Bobs or something like that: tight vocal harmonies (4-part); cunning and witty lyrics; songs about everyday things, like renting videos, but with a definite twist; they do a great Spiderman, a song with the lyrics "Me I like to go Dancing, my baby likes a bunch of authors...", and a great song about the gulf war, etc. The CD is called Bargainville and I'm sured they're great live), and perhaps some others. Let me know how to contribute to this. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1993 13:03:30 -0700 From: jmg@rocket.com (Jim Gurley) Subject: Re: Monster Mash Covers >Happy's choice of cover art... All I was suggesting by commenting on the monsters was that while it may work with the "psychological" demons that Happy battles, it also has the unfortunate side-effect of scaring off the more timid people who (regardless of whether or not you think people who judge a book by the cover are wrong or not) still deserve to hear her music. It's no compromise IMHO, just marketing...and that's something everybody does it...Jane does it, Kate does it, Torri does it...there's nothing wrong with that...to borrow a phrase from MB "it's a question of balance"...that's all ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1993 11:38:10 -0400 (EDT) From: BRENT SCOTT Subject: g'bye Well folks, I joined this list so I could get an idea of what Happy's music was like. I figured it'd be a while before I got around to being able to hear any of her work. Instead I ran across _Warpaint_ and _Equipoise_ at a used CD shop and gave them a listen. I'm afraid I can't say I was impressed. Much too artificial for my tastes. So I'm saying goodbye. However, the copy of _Equipoise_ they had might be of interest to some of you. It was a promotional copy, with the following sticker on the back sheet: Loaned for promotion Ownership reserved by Aural Gratification Inc. SALE IS ILLEGAL I would think this is the only distiguishing aspect of this particular CD, but I'll describe the rest of it on the chance it might be unique. The cover is most certainly typical, 1/2 Happy and 1/2 some green and grey monster. The CD itself has the entire monster painting in blue on it. Sound interesting? If you want me to grab it for you, I will, and I'll send it for $10 or so. That should cover the cost of the CD plus shipping. My e-mail address is s_bscott@vax1.pstcc.cc.tn.us First to ask gets it, sorry to the digest folks. I'm on it too. I shall now unsubscribe... It's been an interesting week though.
