What? Why is that? Why do you have to be anonymous there? I cannot imagine a single reason for that requirement. Don't they want to get anyone just kind of famous? As a listener you don't have an easy job in telling whom you're listening to, except your voice is very unusual. I can't think of any radio show here where they do not announce the names. Mostly they also announce the names of the technicians and even other people. How to built up an identity on the show? How to get fans? How to talk about DJs? 'Hav'ye heard the show with - what's her name? - gee! never got it! where was she? was it WZRD or was it WRZD or just WWWW?' - 'No, what're you talking 'bout?' This is a very well-attended festival they have every year that is not strictly limited to Folk music. Unfortunately I could only go to the Friday night show due to all the backlog of school work I have... but I heard some great music last night! Mary Coughlan: Amazing... she was really, really good. Her band was excellent, with some really great jazzy sax, piano, and guitar solos interspersing her great blues singing. Moxy Fruvous: Great show, four extremely versatile guys. They are a new band from Toronto and do a bit of a capella stuff but mostly with a few instrutments here and there. Highlights were their version of ``Green Eggs and Ham'' and of course ``The King of Spain.'' They just released a CD, after having a fairly successful indy cassette release. The Topp Twins: From [UK-Free (they said)] New Zealand, these are two women with a guitar, a harmonica, and one amazing yodel. Have they been discussed on Ecto yet? I have no idea if they have any records. Anyway, their performance was exceptional, especially if you have some tolerance for country music :) Also, last weekend we had a bunch of bands pass through town including Midnight Oil (fantastic!), The Tragically Hip (I'm not a big fan), Hothouse Flowers (good show). Opening the show, however, was Crash Vegas, which I really enjoyed. Most of the people around me weren't so much into it but I really enjoyed the show they put on. ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1993 11:43:01 -0700 (PDT) From: David Koehler Subject: Re: New Breeders Hi, Anthony wrote: > 30 August in UK and Australia; I'm not sure about America. Mtv's First Look, to be more precise. I didn't get it on tape though, caught it quite accidentally and it was the last time that particular program was shown. Paul King said the first single was not going to be Eat the Music, but Rubberband Girl instead. Also some release days were mentioned, something like Sep. the 13th for the album if I caught it correctly and remember everything... I'm not really sure. I'm not sure if this is new news either :) I at least was under the impression that the release date was sometime in October? They didn't show any clips of a video yet. Well, the one I sent was converted to a GIF on an Amiga 3000, but I shrank the image by 25% to keep it within acceptable bandwidth limits - the full-size image was 120K! One thing I always warn folks is not to listen to too many HR albums all at once! They are so dense with interesting things that one hears after repeated listenings. My recommendation is to put aside all but one or two - you've already got "Rearmament" going! (Isn't "Til the Dawn Breaks" amazing!)- maybe one more for a while! After you peak on this or these, then try another album. They are all so wonderful. Sorry the store didn't have "Equipoise"; you should make them order it! Don't take my advice too seriously. Everyone should do what's best for themselves, but IMHO Happy's albums are so intense that each should be savored individually. Anyway, welcome to ecto, and please pardon my own enthusiasm!:) Bob the person who always signs his name with a strange adjective but this time has gone on and on by way of introducing himself... ======================================================================== From: Tim Breitkreutz Subject: Happy Rhodes! Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1993 16:17:03 -0600 Hi everybody! I've just been listening to Rearmament as I slave away at school here today, and it prompted me to write a short article. I first got Warpaint during a really great time in my life, and it is definitely my favourite HR disc and I totally like it, musically as well as production wise. I got the 1st4 when they came out on CD, which was during a very dark time for me (some of you know what I'm talking about). I listened to them non-stop then, but they've mostly been on the shelf for quite a while now, and I finally find myself taking them out to listen to again. It feels in some ways like I'm listening to them for the first time--through ears unclouded by the grief I was feeling when I got them. This leads up to receiving Equipoise and my current opinion of it. What I really like about Happy is her song writing and voice. On the other hand, I think I can sum up my dissatisfaction with one word: production. Now, I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but does anyone else think that she might do better with a different producer? Personally I think it is kind of rare for a musician to also be a good producer (Kate is of course an prime example of this rarity!). I say this with great hesitation, also, because I think she would need an exceptional producer, and I know AG probably can't afford a huge name. BTW, I think this is somewhat related to the covers thread. I love her monsters, and I think they should certainly stay on the 1st4, where they are an integral part of the totally non-commercial nature of those releases. I see Warpaint as a commercial venture though (I don't think that's a bad word--great artists have to eat too) and its cover was wonderful. However, I don't think the EQP cover was appropriate for a commercial release. (Sorry!) So to sum up I think a big label (preferably one with respect for their artists) needs to pick up Happy *NOW* and spend lots of money on finding a producer and perfecting her sound. (Of course I would be very happy if this also included the use of more real instruments and musicians, too.) So, what d'yall think? - Tim Breitkreutz (tim@cs.ualberta.ca) ======================================================================== From: Tim Breitkreutz Subject: IRC Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1993 16:24:04 -0600 I hope I'm not covering something that I missed in a previous digest, but are there very many of you out there who have access to IRC (Internet Relay Channel) clients? I am rather new to the world of Happy Rhodes... I had been hearing lots about her but I live in Germany where she is completely unknown and it seems impossible to obtain her albums here. I was in The States during the month of June and stopped by Tower Records in the East Vilage. I found four of the albums in question. On the remainder of my trip I searched for the other two. While in a groovy little record store in Lexington KY, I asked if they knew of Happy Rhodes... They hadn't... I started looking through their used CD section and found Equipoise. I showed it to the manager and he replied, "Oh... We used to have this and I always put it in the heavy metal section." GASP! After playing the disk in the store, he ordered two of each disk from Aural Gratification... Anyway, at the end of my trip I was back in New York and Tower on 66th and Broadway had the other two disks I needed to complete my set. I'm hooked... ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where.
