The package says "EXPRESS MAIL NEXT DAY SERVICE: EXTREMELY URGENT" in bright government printed lettering. Well, since no one was home to receive said package yesterday, I got a bright yellow slip which said, "Available for pickup after 8:00" and had the address of the post office which is on my way to work. I figured the 8:00 was am and realized I would have to pick the package up on my way to work. No problem--it's on the way to the subway. I arrive at the post office just past 8 and the fellow at the counter says, "Does your slip say second notice?" "No, it doesn't say anything like that." "Oh, well, they make a second attempt at delivery today. It's a free service." "Well, gee, that's swell, but I'm not going to be home to sign for it and I need the package today." At which point I was told that my package was actually at a *different* post office, several miles away. I was fuckin' *livid*. There was absolutely nothing I could about it. Then I remembered that someone would *definitely* be home today, so at least I wouldn't have to wait 'til tomorrow morning when the package (EXTREMELY URGENT!) would be delivered at my local post office. I think I may have scared the postal employee a bit (I suppose they're used to looking for guns...;-) I was quite irate, exclaiming, "What the hell kind of express service is it when I can't even pick up my own package from the post office?" In any event. My (temp) job ended at 3:00 today, so I'm home, I have Doug's *3* tapes (HEY! This Project's big!). I've got well over an hour to wrap the gifts, dig up a big enough box, and head down to the post office. The HBP/EctoForm will be mailed today, Friday. Jeff |Jeffrey C. Yes, this is really a band. Beth sent me a tape of their CD _Wayward Bus_. It's great! They use very interesting synth sounds to create really unique music. Sometimes it reminds me a bit of Happy's earlier albums, at other times it sounds like music for a video game. Very nice! Their singer has a very pleasant voice. I wish I had the printed lyrics, because they are rather weird. One song ("Falling In Love With the Wolfboy") mentions the astral plane and a padded cell. I would want to have the CD for this song alone; it's brilliant! I tried to order a Magnetic Fields CD at my local record store almost two months ago. The big book they had only mentioned a CD by them called _Distant Plastic Dreams_. I noticed there was some overlap between the track listings of this one and _Wayward Bus_. The CD hasn't arrived at the store yet. The Magnetic Fields CDs appear to be extremely rare. More information on how to get one would be welcome! Whether they guarantee delivery in one day or two is a function of where you're sending it from, where you're sending it to, and what time of day you mail it. You can have it sent to the addressee, or to the addressee's post office (which is cheaper, albeit not always by much). It's also possible to waive the re- quirement that the recipient sign for the item, so that it can be left there (perhaps), but this appears in the fine print on the mailing form. Priority mail is much cheaper and supposedly gets there in two days, but that's not guaranteed. All this makes me wonder why more customers don't go plinking at their friendly neighborhood post offices :-) :-('. Serious fun. Christo was struck by a table labeled "CONDIMENTS" at Sea World, a word which apparently would never be used in Australia. It reminded me of what my last Australian visitor thought was truly hilarious (this was back east). On the freeway, it was not uncommon to see signs saying "Emergency Pull-Off Ahead". I'll let you ruminate on that for awhile, but I'll be back. Apparently our showers were quite another mystery. Four knobs on AUstralian showers, 2 for the bathwater and 2 for the shower water, whereas ours had any number of mysteriously combined knobs. In LA, he had to puzzle over the 3 knob variety, with 2 for water and 1 to switch from bath to shower. Figuring he had mastered the American shower, he was all set to tackle mine, but it only had 1 knob. Didn't take long to realize that controlled both hot and cold, but the thought of pulling up the little plunger on the spiggot to change from a bath to a shower was just too much. So Vickie, if you have time, try to rig up a new shower to try Chris's patience. OK, apparently Pull-off is a euphemism for masterbate, and I'm sure everyone has a keen enough imagination to do the rest. But the Maniacs were really two different bands, with Lombardo and without, and my opinion of which was better depends on my mood. I wonder if Natalie will actually bother to do a solo album, or if she'll immerse herself in social work and leave the music business behind for now. If she does do her own stuff, I can't help thinking it'll be quite commercial, as the Maniacs' stuff progressively became more and more. But who can tell? Happy would be all over both programs in a matter of days. :) Have I said today just what an amazing album _When I Was A Boy_ is? I do have a couple of things to say about it besides that, though: i.) What's with the bargain-basement dance beat permeating the entire thing? Granted, she does things with it and doesn't let it drone on and on and on, but I think overall it detracts from my enjoyment of some tracks simply because I can't *stand* that whump-BADDA-whump-BADDA beat that has overtaken 99.9% of music produced in the past five years. I won't argue that it works in spots, and it doesn't make the album any less brilliant, but it does begin to annoy me after a while. ii.) Is it just me, or does "Temple" sound like it fell off of Madonna's _Erotica_? The whispered-word parts and piano and beat combine to give it the overall effect of the song "Erotica", I think. Or maybe I'm just on serious drugs. iii.) The Catholic imagery is overwhelming. I'm going to be sifting through this baby for years. I love it when I get to do that. :) Until next time... Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1993 16:49:22 +1000 (EST) Hello everybody again. Well, the Chris Boek Tour of 1993 is well under way, with a brief but action-packed stop in the LA area. I'd like to begin by thanking profusely my hosts of those few days, Jeanne and Tom in LA, and Neal and Brinee (? - sorry Neal :} I'm hopeless with unusual names, but it certainly doesn't mean that I remember her any less) in San Diego. They were very very very very good to me during my short stay. I don't know where I would have been without them. I hope that they come to visit me one day so I can return the compliment :). While in LA, Jeanne and I went to Disneyland, and I lovd it :). Space Mountain's great, it's even better from the front. But don't go on it twice if it's late at night, and you have to try and catch a train to San Diego while trying to negotiate your way through copious crowds and a brightly lit parade. Because you'll miss your train :}. You'll also miss meeting up with Chris Williams at a conference in Anaheim, but that probably doesn't really surprise you. :). San Diego's very nice too. I liked the zoo ... It seemed to have had a lot of effort put into mking it really nice. I was quite impressed. Mind you, Melbourne Zoo doesn't lose much in comparison, and it's been years since i was there, so I should really go back there and be more impressed by it .. Sea World was intersting. I enjoyed it, and the Killer Whale show was simply awesome in parts. I did a bit of photographic experimentation, and I still haven't seen the results, but I hope they come out well ... The seal show was a bit ... hmmm ... ummm ... well, it was sort of tacky really. The seals did some pretty good things though. Universal Studios is a fairly exciting place to be too, although it was really busy when I went there and it took over an hour to get into the Back to the Future ride, but the wait was very worth it. THat ride is absolutely stunning. I would have gone on it again if II'd had time. I didn't get to do the fire one, which I'm disappointed about, but that's life. I didn't give myself much time for it. I would like to stress that meeting people, however has been the highlight of this tour so far, however, and I wish much success to EctoHostels Anonymous. I should add on that note, that I will be unable to be an ect- hostel in Holland, as my accommodation is not my own really, but if that changes I will let you all know. However, I can't wait for the EurEctoFest. not to mention the NewYorkJerseyBrunswick-PhillyFest. Or the GaffEcToriFest (which is tomorrow - wow! everybody in the area come!!) Anyway, I'm being very antisocial writing this with Vickie putting on some Victoria Willimas (I think), so I'll sign off and maybe write again from the East coast .... Chris! P.S. Well, Radio 3 is probably too highbrow, but Radio 4's daily arts programme "Kaleidoscope" has regular features on popular music. Radio 2 (easy listening) also has arts programmes. Actually, Radio 4's "Woman's Hour" might be as a good a place to target as any.
