The Globe & Mail is Canada's national newspaper for the bourgeoisie in the country. A few days ago the Ottawa Citizen newspaper (a lefty rag) also ran a short review, but with nothing much to say. Both of these reviews dwelled on the general qualities of Jane's music without passing judgement on just how "good" this latest album is. Hui myhui@bigbunny.isis.org Ottawa Ontario Canada ======================================================================== Date: 03 Aug 93 14:58:26 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: vickie? oh yeah... :-) Well, I finally got a ton of ectos (come on Jessica, you're *never* supposed to leave your post at the gates to ecto :-). My email connection was down for a few days and I was getting worried. I still have not heard whether Doug got my HBP selection, and as the moments pass I only assume worse and worse, so Doug, please let me know. Actually, if you posted a full list of the complete HBP contributors, I must have missed it. If not, such a list would be a good thing. That one digest with mostly Vickie's posts was excellent. I love reading those long "what happened on the way to the cut-out bin" stories that Vickie tells because they're entertaining and I always learn something. It's those kinda posts that have addicted me to this group. Serendipity, right? (inside joke that probably no one will get) Vickie wrote: >it most certainly is one. No matter, until Happy has an offical fanclub >with print newsletters and everything "normal" fan clubs entail, *Ecto* >is the offical fan club, therefore these CDs are being offered only to >Ectophiles. There's nothing I can do for >them though. (And if you think I'm not having a personal problem with >this, then you don't know my non-net Happy-fan friend Charley :-)). Well, y'know, this is clearly something completely out of Vickie's hands. But, I would *have* to believe that Kevin and Happy would be ok with selling HR5's to non-computer-nerd fans. I mean, why not? Especially now that the first wave of ecto-purchasers has passed. The only difficulty is the logistics. I would say if someone finds their way to Vickie or is able to get the address from some other ecto- phile, then they should be allowed to buy one. I mean, I know I've seen a copy of this in a used CD store already selling for way less than I paid for it, so it can't be that hard to get, at least not yet. If I ever spoke to Happy, I bet I could convince her of this. I mean, if Charley is a big fan without a stupid email account, what the hey? Elitism indeed, albeit unintentional and corrigible. Oh well. Vickie says she really likes the new Story album and that she never really let the first one grow on her. Shame shame. Yes, if you see them you will perhaps be enlightened. But as I recall, it took me a long time to really love this album even having seen them. It almost reminds me of the way I came to appreciate The Dreaming. So, I can only say to all you out there, definitely give Grace in Gravity a chance. As much as I like the new one (and it does have its moments) I have a feeling GiG is as good an album as they will ever yield (though I'd love to be proven wrong). I think what I like about GiG the most its freshness and creativity. It's unlike anything else I've heard in a long time. That all being said, I will add my Cranberries accolades to the group. The singer even gets the Ingrid Karklin reward for one of those songs. I particularly like Linger, as well as I think the third or fourth song (the song titles on the whole are not what I expect and so I can never remember what's what). I've also been listening to the Cranes album (Forever?) alot and it's also very good, perhaps a little rougher that the Cranberries. There's one song that starts with piano and orchestrates itself more and more, which is somewhat more impression-leaving than some of the others. Again, I don't remember the name. I have less good things to say about Penelope Houston's The Whole World, which keeps making me think of TWW, TWS, and the TSW (it's kind of like a glom of KT titles!). PH falls a little flat -- her voice is not that interesting or strong, and neither are the songs. Maybe *I* need to see *her* live. I do like the "My friends say I'm lucky" song. The Story live at Tower next Wed? Wow!!!!! Thanks for that info vick. I'm not sure if I'll make it to Katemas before 9pm, if at all.... I will try to call you guys before I come. Is there any plan to go out at some point? But I would like to see Aspel and hear the new songs. Anyways, I'll see you all at Tower and wherever else the Story is playing that night. If you have any chance of seeing them live, you should, even with the band (which I've yet to see). Aimee Mann is opening for the Kinks in Chicago as well. I don't know if I'll make it and it really sucks that they're at one of those huge open-air places that makes it impossible to hear or see much, and costs tons. I wish she would tour alone and play small venues. Ah well, maybe eventually. Bummer that Equipoise has fallen short of expectations, though I guess I'm not that surprised. I liked the album alot, but somehow, as was the case with Warpaint, my listening to it fell off rather abruptly. I still find it requires either a very special mood and a real effort to decide to throw a happy album on, even though it's amazing stuff and I'd sacrifice small furry animals to see her in concert. It is heavy music and it does tend to darken my mood. I still listen to HR5 *alot* though. I justed pulled out Ziggy Stardust (Highly recommended Ryko CD with 5 awesome bonus tracks) since hearing HR5 always pines me for Bowie. And Kate. It would be cool to hear a full RUTH (or any other) cover. Well, enough babbling for now. I have figured out how to run the CD player at work and still actually get work done, so now I spend even more hours of the day listening to music. Plus, I just got my piano tuned! Now why didn't I do that 2 years ago??!! If you have a piano, go get it tuned! -mjm ======================================================================== From: S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk Subject: Re: Caught Up! I just moved into my new apartment last weekend , so the other day I was strolling around my new neighborhood, checking out the shops (Just Desserts, Blockbuster, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, younameit restaurants, comix&games shop, bookstores, ...) and I walked into a fairly small record store. Almost everything they had was out-of-print vinyl, but there were a few CD's on the wall. So I'm scanning the titles, not expecting to find anything interesting, when all of the sudden: Victoria Williams, _Swing the Statue!_ popped out at me. Needless to say, I plunked down the $15 to buy it. The guy at the register said, "Ah yes.. I was wondering when someone was going to notice that." I've listened to it a few times, and I generally like it, but it's going to take me a while to get used to her voice (sometimes it's a bit too cutesy, like on "Wobbling") . I also found out at the same store that it would cost me about $23 + tax to get a copy of Jarre's latest, _Chronologie_ (gulp!) Dammit, why doesn't he have a distributor here?? WRT Jane Siberry's apparent displacement of Iris DeMent on NPR's underwriting announcements: Iris's _Infamous Angel_ album is currently on Warner Bros., which apparently bought it out from Rounder. Jane's last album for the Warner label group was on their Reprise subsidiary, so I assume the new one will also be. I don't think they bought it out from anyone else, however :-). The _Globe and Mail_'s spread on Jane would have been ideal for the "Today's Papers" segment on _World News Now_, particularly with a Canadian as the coanchor. It would surely have been good for at least a 4 on the Leaf-O-Meter :-). MJM's comment on Penelope Houston's tentative foray into Kate-style alphabet soup reminded me that Gillian Garr's book _She's A Rebel_ has a good write-up on Kate. It's about three pages long, and includes a variety of fascinating information such as how EMI initially didn't want to release her third album in the U.S., because the second one had sold so poorly back in 1979. (At least that's how I remember it now, having read it about 4 AM (as distinct from 4AD) last night, when I was inexorably falling asleep. The comparison between the publicity mill's treatment of Kate and of Sheena Easton is also interesting.
