We have a new Golden Retreiver puppy that is beginning to feel at home. Max is perfecting his bark right now, and has become fairly proficient at eating (and what goes along with that!). In a way, it's mostly Max's fault that I was unable to attend Katemas with you all, so I asked brni to bring my regards! Next time I shall make it! Vickie's post made me a little sad and a little Happy. Sad because it seems that EQP was not the breakthrough album they had hoped for, Happy because the new album is coming soon and the Next Major Album is in the works. As for Equipoise, it seems from this list of hardcore Happyfans that it was an album that demanded a few listens to grasp. Warpaint hit me like a silver hammer, but EQP took time to grow on me. Nevertheless it remains a brilliant album, one which seems to find its way to my ears every week. I am saddened that sales fell below expectations, but it seems that H&K have not become discouraged and are gearing up for number 7 (not counting the upcoming "best of"). I'm sure we all want to see them acheive the level of success they so truly deserve, and to do that without selling out. The music business is pretty bad, but the taste of the American Public is not that much better. I still love what old Frank Zappa said: that Americans would not recognize great music if it came up and bit them on the ass! Present company excepted, of course! I should climb down from my soapbox now. Please excuse the mini- diatribe; it's just that I find it sad that EQP sold so little while -oh, you can't pick any one album, but there is a lot of dross out there that sells! But as I've said all along, talent will out, and ere long Happy will find a comfortable niche. I must return to puppygazing. It's a bit like shoegazing but can soil your carpet. See you all later! Except | for one or two songs, I really like this album. I have to admit to | being suprised, because I disliked nearly every song on their first | album. I never said much because I know that there are quite a few | Story fans on Ecto, plus I was told that I'd feel differently if I | saw them in concert. I haven't had that pleasure, so I only listened | to the first album a couple of times, played one song on my show, then | put it up on the shelf. It was an album that I wasn't willing to give | a lot of listens to in order to let it grow on me. I have over 500 | female-vocal CDs and there are too many that I *already* like and | want to listen to. My reaction to this album is the total opposite, | in that I liked it right away. The Story will be performing live in | Tower Records August 11 Well, I just got the same album a coupla days ago, and I've been listening to it lately. I already knew most of the songs on the album 'cause I've seen them performed live twice, so the only real surprises were how bad the instrumental arrangements were for almost every song. Their vocals are beautiful, their guitar playing is flawless. PLEASE SOMEONE, KILL THEIR PRODUCERS AND THE OTHER BAND MEMBERS FOR ME! Ugh, it is almost painful to listen to songs like "So much mine" and "Fatso" with all that GARBAGE thrown in! Although to be honest, I said the same thing about Grace In Gravity when I first heard it, and it did grow on me eventually. Maybe AITH will too, who knows. Right now I'm just angry though. I think production-wise, this album is worse than the previous one, but song-wise, it is better. I really want to get a tape of them playing live... They sounds so much better when they're alone. I think I'll write to them at the contact address listed on the CD. -- | Alan Ezust ezust@{binkley.}cs.mcgill.ca Montreal, Quebec, Canada | |------------- McGill University School of Computer Science ----------------| Carson's Observation on Footwear: If the shoe fits, buy the other one, too. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 2 Aug 93 07:51:34 MDT From: dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: HBP song quiz Greetings, One HBP contributor forgot to include the song titles for his contributions. (I won't identify him here, but if you get the HBP tapes, you'll find out who it is. :) ) I'm hoping that someone here can help identify them. The first is by All About Eve from their album _Scarlett (?) and Other Stories_. The first line talks about ice skating and falling through the ice. (Get your heads out of the Ninth Wave, KaTe fans! :) ) The second is by Maire Brennan from her album _Maire_. The key line in the chorus is "How can we know what the book of life holds for us all?" Also, I want to sprinkle songs with a birthday theme throughout the tapes, and I'm two songs short. Could you send a list of any and all suggestion? I can only hope two will be buried in my collection somewhere. :) Please e-mail any answers/suggestions directly to me, since I am on the digest, and this is time-critical. Thank you much! I live on a heavily traveled street and in the summer time I have all the windows open. I can't believe the cars that go down the street *blaring* their car stereos and the *crap* that comes out of them... I try to be open-minded -- to say that everyone has their own tastes and I should not be judgmental, but it is *so* hard when I hear what the majority of people listen to and wonder how they can... especially when there is so much great music out there. I guess the majority only listen to stuff they've heard before -- usually via radio. Radio stations only play what they think people will listen to, which is music with a good hook or a good beat. It's one big catch-22, I guess. Ok, ok. Bob's soapbox got me on one, but I guess this is not the place because I'm sure the majority of Ecto already agrees! They did not, unsurprisingly. On a whim, on the way back from seeing _The Long Day Closes_ (recommended) at the Music Box, I made a stopover at Stars Our Destination to see if they had it. They did, just as unsurprisingly. In addition to multiple copies of the latter, they also had at least some of its component books individually, as well as a number of Judith Tarr's other titles. In this town, at least, we do not appear to be dealing with an economy of scarcity WRT JT's works. For the moment, anyway, I still elected to defer making the investment, buying instead their last copy of _The Collected Omaha the Cat Dancer, Volume 3_. Be this as it may, I still have pipe dreams of eventually adding the trilogy to the growing array of things I haven't yet had time to read or listen to :-). The reproduction of uuencoded gifs in these pages reminds me of the thread in comp-academic-freedom-talk the past couple of weeks, WRT the moral entrepeneur whose crusade against alleged porn on the net has extended to the newsgroups of uuencoded erotic gifs, apparently on the theory that someone will be offen- ded by an accidental encounter with line after line of gibberish characters. The moral: it's amazing what some people think is dirty :-). WRT Brian's crisis with creamed music reviews: might the band whose name he could remember only partially be the Psychowelders? Personal to Vickie: The Village is still playing _Map of the Human Heart_ through Thursday night. It's still worth going to see. It's also worth ecto- philes everywhere else going to see, if it's playing in your neck of the woods. And for future reference, the Paulina station on the Ravenswood comes pretty close to Rose on Ashland, etc. Better yet, the latter station is right next door to Kerouac Jack's, a restaurant whose decor is vintage 50s, but whose menu, alas, is not strictly cogruent with the decor. They do, however, have the infamous Kerouac Cocktail, an exceedingly weird combination of ingredients (to borrow a phrase from the 50s-vihntage Anacin ads) that I don't remember at all just now, but is worth asking about. I remember I was in there one time, drawn in by the sign outside touting the aforesaid mixed drink, when I asked the bartender whatwas in it, and he gave me the laundry list of strange ingre- dients. I said, "have to try that one of these days." It made the woman sitting at a nearby bar stool laugh. On a later visit, I tried it. I felt the effects a lot initially, but it wore off in due course. Than again, those long waits for the Belmont bus do buy one time to browse at Stars Our Destination.
