The campus radio station is fairly decent, even tho their mix is really strange....something along the lines of mixing alternative with country...at times.. Wow, Woj, i'm impressed (are there some cool people in this list or what?!) that you've managed to even hear these obscurities ... ! I see Amy now and then (mostly with a few beers around), so i'll ask her about additional recordings she might have released. You cover everything i've heard about. She is also a member of a 4-woman sax group called the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet; they have performed a number of times with dance groups and alone. I don't think they have recorded anything yet. As you can well imagine, Ms. Denio is the star of the group (she of the sense of humor); they scour the world in search of unusual sax compositions. kiri writes: > ... So, MS restricts access to ANY recording carrying an Explicit Language sticker?! Here a judge must declare a recording 'off-limits' but such a case has not yet gone to court... ======================================================================== Date: 27 August 1992 16:25:58 CDT From: Subject: Late news Today's Chicago Sun-Times reports that Julee Cruise has been singing with the B-52's lately as a replacement for Cindy Wilson. Perhaps you are refering to Patty Smyth? I saw a recent album of hers in the store, but had no inclination to buy it. I did get the new album "Mind Fruit" by Opus III. Haven't had a chance to listen yet. Also, to whoever said Patti Smith is inconsistent, what do you mean inconsistent? I have most of her CDs (except "Wire") and IMHO she is most consistently good. Anybody hear this song "Love, Sex, Intelligence". I think it is cool but got no idea who sung it. - Vish ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 27 Aug 92 23:53:57 EDT From: Vickie Mapes Subject: Re: Back to reality WELCOME BACK ANGLEOS!!!!! Am I the first person to have heard a song from the new Peter album? I'm so happy! Happy about the song, that is (though being the first to at least post about it is cool too) because it's a *great* song! I was at Northwestern University's bookstore just milling around, killing time waiting for my radio show to start. The bookstore does *not* play WZRD on their speakers (too radical, I suppose) but instead had Chicago's main "commercial alternative" station, WXRT, playing. I wasn't really listening, but found myself moving to the rhythm of the music that was playing, and bobbing along with it. I thought, "this is cool" and picked up a book to look at. After a few moments, my brain started paying attention to the voice and I put the book down and really listened. I've been a Peter fan since 1973, yet, I swear, it took at least 30 seconds of intense listening before I finally realized that it was Peter! He sounds *different* but once I realized it was him, he sounded completely familiar. Strange, I know. Until I hear the song again, I won't know what might have caused me to not recognize him right away. I can't describe the song, except to say that it's nothing like the "Sledgehammer" or "Big Time" -ish type single. This one, if it does "hit" will elevate the charts to new heights. I think long-time fans will be ecstatic, and I think it will catch the ear of new listeners too. (I think, therefore IMHO) I can't wait to hear it again! I'm not sure of the title, I think it was "Digging in the Dirt" but the bookstore was noisy and I had to stand on my tiptoes to reach up and try to hear the speaker. I'm sure that it will be all over the place soon, or at least, I hope so. *sigh* _The Dreaming_ and _Security_ were released almost at the same time. _Hounds of Love_ and _So_ were released very closely together. *sigh* Vickie ps, belated trivia: the Chicago Tribune noted Kate's birthday. (Something was nagging at me...I got out of bed to post this. Strange how the brain works) ======================================================================== Subject: Re: New Peter Gabriel single From: "Mark C. Carroll" Date: Fri, 28 Aug 92 10:53:03 -0400 Just thought I'd second Vickie's comments about the Gabriel song. I was in the car with a friend when they announced that they were going to play the new Gabriel single on WXPN. If they hadn't said it was him, it would have taken me a while to realize. The music style is very different from So or Security... The mix and the instrumentation sound very different. The entire thing seems to be a very new direction for Gabriel. And it's _great_! I'm really happy with it. The thing that I've always liked about Peter Gabriel is the way that he loves to experiment. No two albums from him ever sound the same. He's always going in new directions, and trying out new ideas, and new sounds. After _So_, I was really worried that he had given in to the record companies. I mean, _So_ had some great songs on it (Mercy Street and In Your Eyes both devastate me), but it also had a very commercial edge, which seems to usually appear in the first album before an artist/group totally sells out. After hearing Digging in the Dirt, I'm pretty sure that he hasn't given in, and that he's continuing the push in new directions, without being terribly worried about how many records he'll sell. ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 28 Aug 92 10:21:20 PDT From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: New Peter Gabriel single Vickie Mapes writes: > *sigh* _The Dreaming_ and _Security_ were released almost at the same time. > _Hounds of Love_ and _So_ were released very closely together. *sigh* I didn't know about those similar release times, but if you put together all of the album release rumors we've been hearing lately, then you get: Kate may release her new album in early 1993. Jane may release her new album in early 1993. Happy will almost certainly release her new album in 1993 (isn't it great that she's both prolific and prompt!) Peter Gabriel may have his new album out by 1993 if what you heard was true. And didn't someone say that Laurie Anderson was working on a new album for 1993? If all these come true, then I will be transported to musical heaven by the time all these album releases are over, if all four of my favorite female artists and one of my favorite male artists release albums at quite nearly the same time. Yikes! Even if the albums don't come out in rapid succession it sounds like 1993 will be a banner year for those of us with taste in music. I will be going to see Tori Amos in Eugene Sunday night. I also bought tickets for Love-Hounds John Zimmer and Michael Bowman who intend to see her in Portland tonight and trek down here Sunday to see her again. ======================================================================== Subject: this 'n that Date: Fri, 28 Aug 92 23:45:05 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu A couple of weeks ago, my friend Mike called and told me he was looking through the Columbia House CD catalog and they had Sarah's _Touch_ for some really cheap price. I told him he had to buy it. He then leafed through more of the catalog and said, "Oh, they have something called _Solace_ too. Should I get that?" I gave my obvious answer. Today Mike wrote me: >My CDs came. Touch, Solace, Cure's Mixed Up. Listening to Solace now. >Thanks for making me do it. :-) Isn't it nice to be able to be of such service? ;-) Meanwhile... this evening a friend loaned me his four favorite ethereal albums: Skinner Box's _The Playhouse_, Cocteau Twins' _Victorialand_, His Name Is Alive's _Home Is In Your Head_, and Cranes' _Wings of Joy_. The first three bands I've heard stuff by. Cranes is a new one to me, though I seem remember having heard the name bandied around here sometime. I'm currently listening to that one and it's pretty wild. Anybody know anything about 'em, other than that they're english? I suspect there'll be more to follow as I have a chance to listen to the other 3 CDs (I'm particularly interested in _Victorialand_; all I've heard by CT to date are _Blue Bell Knoll_ and _Heaven or Las Vegas_) Jeff ======================================================================== From: Martin Dougiamas Subject: I'm Cured! That song was worth the price of admission on its own. The lighting was also awesome... during 'Lullaby', for example, they had webs of light flinging out into the audience, ensnaring us and seemingly dragging us towards the stage.
