Patti Smyth just released a new album called "Patti Smyth" Barry ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Misc pt. 1 Date: Wed, 26 Aug 92 11:35:47 EDT Hi! It could only happen to me. Now that I am in the office, waiting for the time to reach 1pm so that I can head to Logan Airport, happy that there are no emergencies waiting for me to work on and I planned to catch up con ecto, the power went down campus-wide, and since athena is distributed throughout MIT it'll be a while til I can access my home directory (ie couple of hours). So, in the meantime, let me briefly outline some things worth mentioning. a) Vacation : Relaxing! I sent ecto a postcard describing some of my adventures but apparently it hasn't found its way to New Brunswick yet :). I spent most of my time torn between Athens and Marathon (where my family has a small house in the pine forest on the mountain above the sea). The inflatable lounge chairs (ilc) that I had bought were all the rage at the beach, and we invented new Olympic Events like, ilc racing, ilc bumping, you get the idea. The cupholders didn't come too handy though :) (you probably have no idea what I am talking about, right?:) ) The island of choice this year was Scopelos, for reasons beyond my control (ie lots of tourists, not enough rooms). 'Do I have to beg? Do I have to prod? Reach into your rooms, and kick your children out?'-From Rooms weren't made for tourists, theme song of Scopelos '92 So we spent some time on the beach, 'til the dawn break with all our moonbeam friends. What else can I say? frappe' coffee-beach-siesta-frappe'-souvlaki- drinks was a self repeating cycle. Suggested for stress relief! b) Olympics: Hooray for Greece!!! Two TWO(!) Gold medals!!! c) Music: There is a song that I will remember this summer by. And it's not by any stereotypical ecto artist. 'It's my life' by Dr. Alban. it was EVERYWHERE. MTV, MCM, Superchannel, Greek TV, Radio, bars. That and Snap's 'Rhythm is a dancer'. TECHNO rules (in Europe apparently). d) Video: Saw Crucify by Ms Amos twice on Superchannel, and DIWIWYL four times on Superchannel and MTV. MCM (whatever that is, I think it's French MTV) was the major surprise. Between dance music they would show these amazing videos. Saw my first Mecano video (very erotic, makes 'Justify my Love' look like a nursery school production), and other. French music videos are QUITE explicit I must say! ;) e) Sophie B. Hawkins: Check out the latest RS for an extensive (two page) article where her sexual preference isn't discussed but some of her sexual history is outlined. She was Bryan Ferry's drummer when she wrote DIWIWYL, or actually she wrote it after he fired her. f) F? ... Enough for now. I haven't got the faintest clue what the current threads are (if any?) and so I will wait til I have at least skimmed through the tons of mail I have. Til then Angelos (aka mc b. happy) ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 26 Aug 92 12:05:27 -0700 From: Michael G Peskura Subject: Question Patti Smith or Patti Smyth Answer: PATTI SMITH, of course! =========== Signed, Mp life member of the Patti Smith Fan Club! :) ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 26 Aug 92 14:59:21 PDT From: barry@gnu.ai.mit.edu Okay, your a Patti Smith fan michael, I'm a Patti Smyth fan, the only resaon I figured you meant Patti Smyth was because Patti Smyth just released her new album. Barry ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 27 Aug 92 00:56:34 EDT From: justin@crim.ca (Justin Bur) Subject: Remind me this evening I once again put on Tori Amos's Crucify EP (the US one - it could just as well have been the Winter limited edition, the one with the covers) on infinite repeat for three repetitions. It was music to listen to while finding something to eat and reading the newspaper, not for full concentration; and I wondered why it is that quite often I choose this EP instead of the album, and why I got tired of hearing Winter over again before I tired of Angie or Smells like teen spirit. The reason is not that I like Tori's own songs less than the Rolling Stones'; rather, there are many occasions, such as tonight, when I find Arrangements tiresome, drums irritating, synthesizers painful. (Not always! Just yesterday Bel Canto was distilled essence of divinity, and shall be so again later!) But now, I want only the piano, by itself or accompanying a lovely clear voice. Remind me, whom else should I listen to besides Tori's covers and a few old Kate Bush songs? In the meantime, I think I'll go through the complete works for piano of Maurice Ravel, beautifully played by Louis Lortie. justin ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 27 Aug 92 14:04:42 MEZ From: Dirk Kastens Subject: Re: VcD, ECD, etc. Hi all, Jens P. Brage suggests: > Certainly, the European Ectophiles should know Vaya con Dios, so that rules > out 2) and I doubt 3)! Sorry, but despite of being a European Ectophile, I've never heard anything of Vaya con Dios. I'm not very much into Spanish-like music. I like some instrumental guitar music with a Spanish touch but I hate Gipsy Kings, for example. Your description of their music is very vague but if they sound like GK, I won't like VcD. I totally agree with Vickie: > How to describe the music? Ugh, this is the part I hate, because I'm > really bad at it, and I can't seem to do it without bringing in other > artists as a guideline. I, too, hate categorizing. Sometimes it's the easiest way to compare a musician with another one. Maybe, if someone doesn't know Kate Bush, I would start with: 'imagine Peter Gabriel having a female voice'. Some artists can easily be described this way, but the 'Gods' and 'Holy Ghosts' (PG, KB, TA, HR), who have absolutely no example, make it difficult to explain. Sometimes it helps to describe the music with a certain situation or landscape or feeling. I have a CD of Johannes Schmoelling (ex-Tangerine Dream) called White Out, a concept album about the Antarctic. Johannes himself describes it: 'WHITE OUT - an optical illusion: the merging of heaven and earth, the absence of shadows, space without depth, without horizon.' His music is a 'journey, a departure to a place that opens up by degrees, a coast that approaches and rises to an iceberg...' a.s.o. Martin thinks: > P.S. A thought just occurred to me : has anyone noticed the rather large > proprtion of ecto posts that are written by people just going to bed? > Do you think people are generally warmer, bluer and fuzzier at this time? :) I'm writing my posts in the evening, after I found the time and rest to read the digests. But it shouldn't be too late. And you're right: I'm really feeling warmer, bluer and fuzzier at this time. Unfortunately, I've no net access at home, so I have to store the messages on disk and take it to university the next day to mail them out. And I must be careful reading them again, because I'm a sourpuss until lunch and may want to retract some statements (this one, for example :-) ) Re: Ecto Contact Database: This is the result of evaluating the address list: U.S.A. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx non-USA xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Germany xxxx Canada xx Australia xx Finland xx U.K. xx Netherlands x Denmark x Hey, it seems we have to do some Happyvangelizing outside the USA ;) Being a geography student, you may send me your world map and I will try to do the "puttin-red-dots-on-the-map" thing. BTW, I asked Martin to delete the 'studying geography' from my passions. I just gave up writing my diploma about the development and location of lawyer's chanceries (too boring) and I'm reluctant to start writing another one (about geographic information systems, it's interesting but I hate writing). As you can see, I don't call it my passion. Now it's time to listen to the long-not-heard Johannes Schmoelling and then I go to bed. They give four stars to SBH's _Tongues and Tails_ album. Shakespear's Sister was on Arsenio Hall yesterday. The number they performed was not as weird as some would have you believe, but they are defiitely an acquired taste. The video for this song ran last week on _Friday Night Videos_ and it is definitely weird. SS's Siobhan Fahey was one of the prominent pop persons who told _Q_ their favorite Morrissey songs. The other day on the WZRD in Chicago (the Northeastern U. station on which Vickie's show SIG is broadcast [BTW, Vickie, did your show change time slot? Is it now on 7:30-8:30? I *wish* it was on even later as I am rarely home before 9 Wed. nights and can sometimes catch it in the car]) *after* Suspended in Gaffa, I heard a cover of Eleanor Rigby by a rock violinist, Mad Dog something or other (I have the name in the car) which caught my interest. After that they played three Oscar Peterson (pianist) tunes which I also liked. This got me thinking along the lines of Jazz interpretations, or just plain interesting covers, of anything from popular show tunes to rock standards, to just about anything. The RUTH cover by (I forget their name but it's a great version) that came out recently is a good example (the Jazz cover that someone included on the HBP was not quite as interesting, IMHO), as is John Coltrane's Favorite Things. In particular, interesting Jazz interpretations of non-Jazz songs can often lend insight into the piece of music and give it a whole new orientation. [obvious question] Does anyone know of other such covers that they may be able to recommend? In particular, jazzed up covers of reasonably to very familiar songs are of interest. The BOBS (new wave a cappella groupe, extraordinaire) do some fine Beatles (Helter Skelter), Hendryx (PH), Zepellin (WLL), etc. covers as well. Well, any recommendations would be cool. -mjm P.S. I just got it so I haven't heard it yet, but I am overjoyed by the prospect of hearing Peter Hammill, Lene Lovich, and Andy Bell in a Rock Opera based on Poe stories!!! I also bought a used copy of a Tom Robinson Live CD. Dunno about his political and other preferences, but I can surely say that it is one of the best live CD's I have ever heard. Question: A song there called Atmospherics is credited to Gabriel/Robinson. Is that Gabriel, as in Peter? Just curious. Also the live version of 'War baby' kicks!!! I also got a bunch of Greek CD's. I will send Vickie a dub of Elli Paspala's CD another Greek singer that I really liked. No new Eleftheria release :(. b) Thanks to Alan Sodoma for the Sophie B. Hawkins concert report. I missed the one in Boston (pooh!). And also thanks to Mitch for informing us about the Q magazine article. I will try to find that issue. c) My friend Efi's brother is a very good friend of a good friend of the general manager of Virgin Records in Greece. Guess where Efi's Warpaint and my sampler tape will be heading soon? They are all major fans of Kate, and (surprise) Loreena McKennitt, so I am sure they will be interested. Other than that my Happyvangelizing wasn't too effective. Most people looked at the ecto T and thought to themselves, 'Gee better go to Rhodes for a vacation.
