Then Patti Smith is the Devil!! I wonder why she is not appreciated in this forum, perhaps because she is more rock and roll? Me, I like her as much as any of the above three!! Anybody got the new Opus III single? I heard it on the radio and am still hunting for it. Also, I hear the new Sinead O'Connor album is coming out, bunch of 40s-50s standards. They played on of the songs on the radio, "Success has made a failure of our home life" I think. Pretty lame, IMHO. In other news, Happy and KaTe's music is now spreading to India. I am sending a bunch of cassettes for a friend there. It's ironic that it took me weeks to find a copy right here in Seattle; if you found it in Chi-town, it must be available nation-wide. But it is available from Miramar Recordings, 200 Second Ave West, Seattle, WA 98119 for 14.98 plus 3.00 postage & handling. I haven't seen Pamela for years. In the early 80's she was in one of those typically 'quirky' so-called newWave bands called Visible Targets. I'll have to send you a tape. And, with your permission, I'll try to forward some of your comments to her cuz i'm sure she'd appreciate the feed-back. :) Cheers, Mp ======================================================================== Date: 24 August 1992 12:51:54 CDT From: Subject: Mondo Syllabic no. __ Let me begin by adding my voice, if retroactively, to those who have already wished Martin a happy birthday. The other day, I'd just returned from a day's hiatus from ecto-reading, I was more rushed than usual as a result, and this detail somehow fell through the cracks in my zeal to expound on the virtues of happyvangelizing before NPR. My memory was jogged when the next day, I was at the flicks in a restored old-fashioned movie palace, and the machine that rolls pseudo-clouds across the ceiling let loose with one whose shape vaguely resembled that of Australia. One more chapter and verse, I guess, for the Book of Toast Posties. (Cf. my essay last December on "We're Building a Church?") Which seems to dovetail nicely with the beatification, in our theology, of Pamela Golden. In my annual concession to wholesale economic irrationality at Rose Records' storewide sale, I acquired an album of hers, but don't recall the title; I did note that it came out prior to this year; have there been subsequent ones? The current _Rolling Stone_ has a feature on Sophie B. Hawkins, in which it notes that she made two videos of DIWIWYL because MTV considered the first one too weird, or something to that effect. Anyone recall which was the first, and which ultimately made it to MTV? (BTW, the same issue gives a good review to Lucinda Williams' new album.) By another ironic coincidence, I recently acquired what I believe to be the full set of Mike Weaver's novels, from an SF bookstore here. They're hard to get; a shop from which I previously tried to order a couple discovered they were out of print. If you stumble across them, don't delay getting your- self a set; I now have what may be the next-to-last copy of _Mercedes Nights_ on retail shelves in the city. Anyone recall which was the >first, and which ultimately made it to MTV? I'm going to assume that the color, scantily-clad-Sophie video was the first because: a) I saw it quite a few times before I ever saw the b/w 'jam' version b) When I first saw the video, I didn't care much for the song, but loved the video precisely for the reason that it was 'weird' (ie not in keeping with typical MTV styles) and interesting c) I'm not sure I ever saw the color version on MTV; I remember seeing it on VH1. I've seen nothing but the b/w version on MTV for quite a while. Jeff ======================================================================== From: Tim Breitkreutz Subject: The Burning Times and Wendy Carlos Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1992 19:13:10 -0600 Greetings once again ectophiles! I have been thinking about liz's comments regarding tape dubs of movies such as the Burning Times, and in general, I agree with her, although I think it would be better to see a pirate copy than never see it at all, if it came down to that. Anyway, I stopped by the NFB office today, and got some interesting information. There are some NFB offices outside of Canada, and I will post the addresses there for those who are interested. The video of The Burning Times costs CDN$26.95 up here, I don't know what it would cost abroad. A second idea I had is that we could form a video chain, whereby one of us (namely me) would buy the tape new, watch it a couple times, then sell it to the next person on the chain for a slightly lower price + postage (it being slightly used). This would avoid any piracy, as we would merely be selling used goods down a chain. Has this been tried before? Like I say, I'm willing to take the first hit. Finally, I noticed while glancing through my latest Radio Guide (The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's radio listings) and noticed that in their Music by Mail section (kind of like a cd club) they have a new disk by Wendy Carlos. Here's the description (reprinted without permission): Wendy Carlos, Switched on Bach 2000. Twenty five years after the original smash hit _Switched on Bach_ Wendy Carlos has recorded all the pieces on the original release, plus a few more selections that utilize all the latest, most advanced computer technology. Includes a 28 page booklet. (Telarc) DDD $22.00 Personally, I got tired of Switched on Bach after the first n listens, but I thought some of you ectophiles, and perhaps Happy herself, might be interested!
