This appeared in today's paper: On August 17, 1877 American astronomer Asaph Hall, who discovered a satellite of Mars on Aug. 11, sighted Mars' second satellite; he named them Deimos and Phobos. Cool eh? Sarah was *wonderful* last night!!! I wore my Ecto shirt and it was noticed by a rec.music.gaffa lurker from Chicago who's never contacted us before. He said he bought Warpaint at some little store in one of the far 'burbs (Downer's Grove) and loves it! I didn't write down his name (I should have, 'cause my memory fades...) but I encouraged him to join Ecto. Hopefully he will. Kiri was there and she had to leave before meeting Sarah because she had to get up early to drive down to Mississippi, where she'll be going to grad school. We did meet Sarah after the concert, and she recognized us. (Actually, during the concert, she said it was nice to be back in Chicago and to see some familiar faces. Chris and I were right up front only a few feet away from her and she looked right at us!) I mentioned that I was the one who gave her the Happy Rhodes cassette and she had a blank look on her face and went "oh" so I imagine it was never listened to, and is lost and gone forever :-(. While waiting for Sarah to come out, I was playing Happy on the boombox and some people actually came up and asked what it was. I took the opportunity to do some Happyvangelizing :-). She's heading east, and I know she'll be playing Boston, but I don't know the date. She only has 2 more weeks on tour (she's been on tour for 14 months!) and then she'll start work on her next album. After taking a much-needed vacation, I'm sure. It's amazing, but after all that touring, her voice is still crystal clear and gorgeous! THANK YOU KLAUS!!!!!!!! THANK YOU MICHAEL PESKURA!!!!!!! THANK YOU BARRY WONG!!!!!!!! I don't know how readily available it is now. The August _Request_ magazine gives a good review to PJ Harvey's new album, _Dry_ (Island). Interestingly, it says that PJH "has been crowned the new Patti Smith on account of her unbridled sha(wo)manism." [sic] The same issue also speakes favorably of Archie Roach's _Charcoal Lane_ (Hightone). It is the second in a series (more to come, I think) tracing women's spirituality in the Western tradition. The first one was called ``The Goddess Revealed'' or something like that. It was not nearly as striking or beautiful as the second but interesting nontheless. The Burning Times really deserves a good theatre, or at least a good stereo at home. Is there any way for people outside Canada to get our NFB films on video? If not, maybe I could send out some dubs. Let me know if you're interested. ICB: And we definitely should get more ectophiles onto this icb thing. For those of you familiar with bitnet, it's just like the relays there, except you connect to an Internet host which acts as a central hub. Hope to see some of you there! I don't know how to get the sources to the `icb' program, someone else will have to let us know! Vickie: The pizza we ordered was pretty darn thick by local standards but it still had the toppings in the non-Chicago style :( Personal to jessica: I accidentally chopped off the top of my Digest 135 on its way in :-( If you could send me another copy at your convenience it would be appreciated. The tape orders which have come in during my two weeks will be filled shortly. Greg, feel free to add the Philadelphia concert tapes to my list, and any new tapes from Vickie are always welcomed! One problem with vacation is that I miss people's birthdays. :( I hope that Ron Hill and Vickie Mapes thoroughly enjoyed their birthdays as much as I enjoyed my ten days in the wilderness! The minor discussion of "Feed the Fire" during my absence caught my ear, since it ran through my mind often during my backpacking trip. It's actually quite a nice song for backpacking or any activity in the wilderness. The next time you hear it, think of it that way. However, during our trip, snatches of it took other more mundane meanings. The phrase "Back to the trees" always popped into my mind whenever I picked up trowel and toilet paper and went to find a nice place to squat in the trees near our campsites. However, the phrase "Feed the Fire" took on even a stranger meaning. We were backpacking in grizzly bear country, so for our own protection, we had to burn our leftover food. So after every breakfast and dinner, we stoked the campfire high and threw food on it that you would ordinarily never think of burning. When it was my turn to do it, I kept humming "I feed the fire". Besides, you wouldn't believe how artistic blobs of white oatmeal and bright red cherry cobbler look on pieces of burning wood. That sight could inspire anyone to write a song! :) Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 18 Aug 92 17:57:07 +0200 From: Karl Dotzek Subject: new address Hi there! Mp ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 18 Aug 92 16:16:21 EDT From: elizabeth w warwick Subject: The Burning Times This is *not* an endorsement/critique of The Burning Times because, sadly, I hve missed screenings in two cities--San Francisco and Boston. This *is* a plea for people to call their local art film house or museum and request that the movie be shown. In San Francisco, the movie regularly plays to sold-out houses; in Boston, the reception (according to my local paper) was excellent. If theaters request this film, then the producers and director (a woman!) get the idea that there is an interested audience for challenging, unconventional, non-Hollywood films here in the USA. Sorry to be a moralistic poo-head, but video and video dubs have done great damage to the independent movie houses. Remember, The Burning Times is a *film* and wasn't designed to be seen on a small screen. Secondly, private screening of pirated videos deprive the artists of royalties--and most independent filmmakers struggle to make a living. End of sermon. Support alternative artists by encouraging the widest possible viewing (or hearing) of their work. That's my definition of a true fan! liz ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 18 Aug 92 13:56:17 -0700 From: Michael G Peskura Subject: The Burning Times Point well taken, Elizabeth. Hawkins gig in Rochester that was over a couple weeks ago. Better late than never! Sophie B. Hawkins 3D's, Rochester, NY 8-4-92 We Are One Body Live & Let Love Saviour Child California Here I Come Before I Walk On Fire I Want You Don't Stop Swaying Listen Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover Mysteries We Understand Encores: Gimme Shelter All The Young Dudes The opening 'band' was nothing much to comment about. Two guys (guitar & bass) doing cover tunes of R.E.M., The Guess Who, The Who and some others. Not too interesting. Sophie and band were great. They didn't sway to much from the album versions of the songs, but the songs all seemed much more upbeat and LOUDER! From the list, they played everything from the album except 'Carry Me'. Sophie was extremely energetic, as were the rest of the band. There wasn't anything real spectacular about the concert, but 'Gimme Shelter' was a fine choice. Especially with the female back- up singers. All in all, a pretty good concert. I can't complain. Especially for only $7.
