"a coveted spot"? :) :-P Gee, *I'm* jealous. :) On another beastly note... I'm still dying here without my 1st4 CDs... It's been about 6 weeks or more since I ordered them, but still no sign of 'em... Every day my usual smile is wiped from my face when I open the mailbox. Has anyone else been experiencing longish delays from AG? I'd like to think it's simply because they are snowed under with orders, but fear my order has been lost in the mail. May your ears be blessed with Happy's parasites, Martin BTW, the song quoted in my sig has recently been covered by some new band and is climbing the charts, at least here. They call it "Run"... I heard it just 5 minutes ago on the radio... it strikes me some of you might like it. Plenty of ideas, none definitive. Back to nature? Trees have roots, leaves, etc. and can serve as a metaphor for deeply rooted influences giving way to new ideas. Since the song is about those artists that influenced her (PG, etc.), the trees could symbolize the early, unadulterated music she was brought up on, or more aptly "fed" as food or fuel for her day as a composer and innovator, breaking down the basic elements of what she had heard and synthesizing a new music, her own. The desire to go back to the trees could be nostalgia, or a salute to those who came before her and provided the fuel (fueled the fire) of her own creative artistic process. Perhaps a tip of the hat to the greatness of the trees, of which she is an heiress. kiri: > One thing I noticed, being oh a half foot taller than her was > her dusty brown roots. Yes, she definitely dyes her hair (my gfriend, a natch red-head, and self-proclaimed expert on the subject, noted this right away). But I haven't heard about the "name change". It actually had nothing to do with the allusion to electrical tape in our vocabulary of terms of art, being a takeoff on the film _Sex, Lies and Videotape_. It is, nonetheless, interesting for being the only time I've ever seen any variant of the word "gaffa" used on the net outside the gaffa newsgrou p and its kindred groups and lists. In re Kiri's mention of Tori Amos' brown roots: The other night I saw the movi e _True Love_ on TV. Though the cast had no recognizable names other than Anabella Sciorra (herself not a recognzable name at that time), it seemed to me that one of the other performers looked a lot like Tori except for having brown hair--Naahh! The same issue of _Creem_ that panned _Tongues and Tails_ has reviews of _In Ribbons_ by Pale Saints, part of the 4AD stable whose vocalist Meriel Barham used to be in Lush (this review was generally favorable); _Rites of Passage_ by Indigo Girls (also favorable); and _fact and fiction_ by Kristen Hall. The latter album may be worth checking out further: it's in the "introspective acoustic folk-rock" tradition of Shawn Colvin and Two Nice Girls, among others, accorsing to the review, and has backups by Emily (Indigo Girls) Saliers and Cindy (B52s) Wilson, among others. The other day, _Fresh Air_ on NPR had an interview with an Australian folk singer named Archie Roach (sp?), who seems to lean toward themes of urban misery in his songs, but who I got the impression might be worth checking out further. Any of ecto's Australian readers ever hear of him? A while back, we write up some questions to send to happy, and she wrote back. one of the questions involved the titles to "Box H.A.P." and "Project 499". Jeff Burka asked: "What inspired or brought about the titles to "Box H.A.P." and "Project 499"?" Happy answered: "Unfortunately, the lack of better ideas. "Box H.A.P." is meant to be the address to which I'd send a letter to myself, and "Project 499" is what my engineer replied when I asked rhetorically, "What shall I call this one?" " The entire thing is available in the archives, which i gather you can't get... An answer to another question chris asked: If you can't ftp, just ask me! I'll mail anything that's in the archives (including gifs, which i just uuencode.) Mailing disks is more of a pain, but i'll do it when neccessary. Well, the "Beastie Boys' tour" is rolling into the Seattle area this Saturday; however, here's the line-up (catch this!): Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Charlatans UK, L7, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Posies, and Sarah McLachlan It's an all-day outdoor concert called 'End Fest' (cuz it is being presented by KNDD 107.7 fm, 'The End' (end of the dial), our local commercial alternative station). aside: i struggle to understand how both 'commercial' and 'alternative' can be used together to describe a radio station, but that's just because i've listened to too much radio. :) Should be a surreal day; tho' there is a threat of rain, which will make for a field of wet-rat revelers. I won't be there. It was sold out long ago. Mp ======================================================================== Subject: Happy's coming back to Philly!!! From: "Mark C. I always thought this was a reference to an evolution sort of concept.. You know, the sort of "And then Man CAME DOWN FROM THE TREES" sort of thing. I think Douglas Adams used a play on this concept in HHGTG... Or was it Monty Python somewhere... My memory is not happening all that well today... But at least it's Friday !! I don't know about Jane, but I sent Kate an original cassette of Ecto, along with the lyrics of "Ode" along with a letter of condolence for the loss of Alan Murphy and Gary Hersch (sp?) nearly 2 years ago. Then, last summer, I sent a CD *and* a cassette of Warpaint, with a short bio of Happy and an urging to listen close to the lyrics of "Feed the Fire" because it was partially about her. Happy's never heard from Kate, but Kate *definitely* knows about Happy. I also sent Peter Gabriel a copy of the CD and got a note back from his personal assistant saying that she would make sure he got it. No word yet... I personally gave Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos copies of Warpaint. Happy sent a copy of WP to Queen, before the death of Freddie Mercury. Ray Jung sent a copy to Dave "*not* the same one that's from Eurythmics" Stewart. Pat Tessitore sent a copy to Laurie Anderson, who's a friend of his. Geez, since nobody else wants to be Happy's Dave Gilmour, maybe someone should send a copy to the man himself! The 4 other acts are: Jeffery Gaines Shawn Colvin Live 10,000 Maniacs Tickets are $25 (inside) - $12.50 (lawn seating). They go on sale August 15th through Ticketmaster. WXPN is holding an open house at the station on August 15 for the purpose of selling "special" tickets at $50 each. There is going to be a special section up front for these ticket holders. I'm not sure how many seats the Mann has but I would guess 1500. I could be off on that number...perhaps someone like Bill Pringle would know better. There are no sides or back to the Mann...I'm not sure if the lawn seating is limited to just the back or whether it includes the sides also. I don't think it includes the sides...so if you buy lawn seating you'll be way in the back...and, wet and muddy if it rains. They mentioned that Happy would go on about 7 PM.
