The whole story of Lollapalooza and L7 ======================================================================== Date: 4 August 1992 14:39:44 CDT From: Subject: Skinbacks Chalk one up for Greg's interest and concentration, in catching the factual error in my mention of the background music for the Janet Evans profile. The music was, in fact, the _instrumental_ riffs, presumably by the usual Irish suspects. My confusion is traceable to my having recently stumbled onto an old _Stereo Review_, which had a squib on Kate which mentioned that the Trio Bulgarka appeared on the TSW _album_, but did not address the issue of whether they appeared in the TSW _song_. It having been quite a while since I'd heard either album or song, I interpolated my assumption--based on the vaguely Balkan sound of the riffs--into my posting, which the original informant on gaffa did not. To correct another error, in one of my posts from last week on the Kate-Olympic nexus (not that far removed from the current topic, in a way): turns out that Ben Johnson's medals were yanked after his 1988 positive steroid test, but there was not a lifetime suspension from the games. Another suggestion for Happy Olympic music: "To Live In Your World" in refer- ence to the defections of Comaneci, Karolyi, etc. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 4 Aug 92 17:19:09 -0400 From: lizzylou@world.std.com (elizabeth w warwick) Subject: FYI:Tori! While scanning the periodical shelf at my local library, I noticed a familiar face gazing up from the cover of Keyboard magazine. Sure enough: Tori! In the Sept. 1992, she talks with amazing passion and clarity about respecting and honoring herself, her talent, and her chosen instrument (piano). A wonderful glimpse into one artist's thought process. A bonus: great pictures!!!! liz ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 4 Aug 92 22:53:48 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu Subject: back to the trees jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu sez: >I've racked my brain for the last two days and still haven't come up with >an plausible reading/explanation of the fragment "..and all our animals" >in the first verse of "Look For the Child," a song I otherwise like. hmmm. stuffed animals perhaps? i've got a lyric question of my own as well. in "feed the fire", the line "i want to go back to the trees" is a bit perplexing. my guess is that she is playing off the title of the song, implying that music that influenced her when she was young is equivalent to wood to feed the fire. anybody else have any ideas? sez: [regarding attacks on y tori kant read] >Granted, there may be a tendency on gaffa toward greater rigidity in these >matters. For all that, he may have a point. Anybody have any thoughts on >that? i think a lot of that results from the small amount of people who have ac- tually heard the record. i sometimes wonder if people repeat and rephrase what they've heard in other forums and discussions - so if person x heard that person y thought album z was poop, they might relay that information on as their own opinion. this would especially happen when it is hard to get the music itself (ie. y tori kant read). for myself, i must confess that i only heard the record once a long time ago and that i didn't like it *then*. my tastes have certainly changed since then so perhaps my opinion of y tori kant read would be different now. re- gardless, i have said that i wasn't thrilled with the album based on that listen. on another topic, vickie said something about cassette releases of the psychowelders. in the letter i got from rhondda, she said that she had some copies of the _orphic egg_ cassette left, but that she was straight out of _the rose the key and the glove_. $6 apiece for the cassette. if you are into buying t-shirts of obscure bands, she also has t's for the new album and very few (like 2) of the mystic hand/occultum fiat manifactum design (she *had* 3, but well, i bought one). the new t's are $15 and the mystic hand ones are $12 - you might want to check on those before ordering. i dunno how many she'll have left before long (knowing senor footah). finally, a small note of pseudo-interest: i picked up a single over the weekend by a band called the leatherwoods. the song is called "happy ain't coming home". didn't buy it for the title though - i had heard another song of theirs the week before on the radio. not too bad, but somehow i suspect that most people wouldn't go for it... woj ======================================================================== From: iamecto@chinet.chi.il.us (kirstin hargie) Subject: The Last Skeptic or Tori in Chicago Date: Tue, 4 Aug 92 23:14:23 CDT Well ok....she's wonderful. As for magical, i still can't give her that. Tori has amazing stage presence. Her continual crowd stare obviously lends her to her stage antics. Tori is a genuinely nice person - as far as I can tell. While I'm still a little skeptical her brilliant performance adds another dimension to her musical ability. I think it's finally time for me to get the cd :) One thing I liked about the concert, and her was her sense of humor. She has the amazing knack of making love to her piano, and her audience. One thing I noticed, being oh a half foot taller than her was her dusty brown roots. Yep, that's a definite red dye job, although it's done tastefully, and looks great. I have to wonder if it, and her name change were 'highly suggested' by her label, or if she just needed to escape her old self. Unfortunately I missed katemas and the psychowelders cause of working the night shift, along with extra complications that arose that day. Ahh well there's always next year :) Well time to get back to the grind of trying to repack all my stuff that I just unpacked two weeks ago. kIrI 'oh oh these little earthquakes.' ======================================================================== From: lisd!breit@ns1.rutgers.edu (Tim Breitkreutz) Subject: Re: ecto #310 (and more) Date: Wed, 5 Aug 1992 09:54:49 +0100 Greetings fellow Ectophiles, I've been too busy lurking through the archive ectos to post lately... :-) so forgive me if this post is a mix of very old and new... I'm pleased to announce that my brother and sister-in-law are now Happy Rhodes fans. I have lent out Warpaint to a few others, still waiting to see how much interest there is. So far I've mostly got "Sounds a lot like Kate Bush" reactions.... I'm not much into evangelism of any type, but I figure since I'm probably the only person in the province of Alberta with HR's music I should probably work on at least letting some people hear her stuff. (I've probably mentioned before that Warpaint was on most of my radio shows back when I was doing a show last year.) Now that I have an extra Warpaint, I am planning to lend it to a local Kate-fan record store owner when he comes back from his vacation in September. Also, what is the status of the 1st4 CD's (i.e. how many there are left, if another pressing is in the works)? Due to unfortunate circumstances beyond my control I may have to order some more of them. Now that I've had the first four for a while, I think I can start commenting on them. Like others, I was uneasy with posting my immediate reactions to these albums. I started doing a track by track review, but it took me so long to get through VI, I don't know when I'll get to the others. One thing I noticed in particular, though... I thouroughly like about 20% of the songs unqualifiedly (is that a word?) all the way through. These songs are worth at least the price of the CD's on their own. About 5% of the songs I could just as well skip over, but I don't dislike any (not even Box H.A.P. !). Most of the rest fit in to a category where I am glad to have them as a part of my collection. But one strange thing I find with the 1st4 is another category of songs (say another 20% or so) which are _almost_ perfect. Part of the song is fantastic, but the rest is just good. Sometimes it's the words and sometimes it's the music. All in all, I'm very glad I purchased the 1st4, and should have ordered the tapes a long time ago... A couple more points dredged up from the archives: Twin Peaks: I caught on to Twin Peaks only on the second season, and I would love to see the first season. Does anyone know if they will be played as reruns, or if there is a way to get copies on VHS? (Un)official Sampler: Could some kind person please mail or post the tracks on the unofficial sampler? I am soon going to put a sampler together and it would help to see what the collective wisdom of Ecto has come up with. Thanks. Christmas cards: Too bad I joined ecto three months too late to get a christmas card. I'm jealous of you guys! :-( Now on to Digest #310: jeffy says: > > I've racked my brain for the last two days and still haven't come up with > an plausible reading/explanation of the fragment "..and all our animals" > in the first verse of "Look For the Child," a song I otherwise like. Very Are H&K vegetarians? Mitch quotes from the _Chicago Sun-Times_: ... > The band asked her to move to Vancouver and sing demo tapes. Her parents > wouldn't permit it, but two years later one of the band members offered McLachl > an a five-album contract with Network Records. ... That's ``Nettwerk,'' a label based in Vancouver. I sent Happy and Kevin Nettwerk's address and phone number, in case they hadn't tried for a distribution deal with them yet. Nettwerk produces and/or distributes lots of great stuff in Canada: Sarah M, Lava Hay, Bel Canto, Skinny Puppy, and many more. It was started by the members of Moev, a synth-based band. With Nettwerk's combination of synth sound sculpture and folk-influenced `femme' music (to use Vickie's term) I think they would be an ideal label for Happy. Does anybody know if Happy and Kevin have contacted them already? They said, "They don't mean anything."' "I don't know the reason why someone would scoff," said L7 guitarist Donita Sparks, although she added that the group is not booked by Triad [the booking agency]. L7's new album, 'Bricks are Heavy,' is a college-radio favorite, and the band has won a coveted spot as the opening act on the Beastie Boys' tour." The current issue of _Creem_ reviews SBH's _Tongues and Tales_, and opines it's closer to "Joni Mitchell's pop jazz pretensions" than to Madonna. The sam e issue has an article on the Roches, and the current _The Face_ has a piece on Shakespear's Sister (which I was surprised to learn includes Siobhan Fahey, late of Bananarama). My latest idea for a Happy Olympic song: "Murder" as a metaphor for the Dream Team's steamrollering of the rest of the field in basketball.
