How the world has weirded out in 25 years! I can remember when the use of the Sitar in the Beatles' _Sgt. Pepper_ and _Magical Mystery Tour_ albums gave solid currency to things Indic in the pop of the day. Believe it or not, I have been able--a whole day after the real Katemas--to think of a few more applications of Kate's music to the Olympics, aided by the discovery that NBC also uses historical footage in its topical videos. "Heads We're Dancing"--former druggie, and continued free spirit, Nelson Diebel wins the first U.S. gold medal. "Experiment IV"--East Germany's steroiding of its women swimmers, et al. "The Sensual World"--the allure of women's events for male viewers, and I suppose vice versa in some cases. If we want to stretch it to include album titles: "The Kick Inside"--soccer. "Never For Ever"--Ben Johnson's lifetime bouncing in '88 (later modified on appeal) for steroid use; or possibly Mike Barrowman, had he not won his sole preretirement gold (medal, not watch) the other night. I've also thought of an applicable Happy song: "I Am A Legend," for the wit and wisdom of Charles Barkley. If not exactly Happy Katemas, might I at least wish youse (cf. my posting the other day) a Happy Katemas Alternate Observance and Party Date. Fortunately, the Republican Convention is still a few weeks off, so there's still time to put together your BUSH '92 posters. This show is a mixture of new alternative music, world music, and some oldies, along with in-studio interviews and performances. The show stresses recently issued CDs. WXPN has been experimenting with this type of format for a few years now, and was given a grant to create "World Cafe." The host for this show is David Dye, a seasoned radio personality with varied musical interests. The result is a professionally produced show with the diversity of a college station. World Cafe plays a mix of recorded music, interviews, in-studio sessions, and special features. The music is a mixture of alternative pop, folk, rhythm and blues, country, ethnic music, and even some mainstream pop. (They do not play Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Megadeath, etc. but will play Paul Simon, James Taylor, etc.) Features vary from an "Album of the Week", where a new album is analyzed and different cuts are played throughout the week, to shows highlighting a particular artist, instrument, or type of music, to "My Three Songs", where listeners send in three songs they think go together nicely. Each week, some listener gets to introduce his or her three songs on the show. World Cafe has held interviews with Bruce Cockburn, Happy Rhodes, Timbuk3, Vinx, Christine Lavin, The Innocence Mission, Indigo Girls, Michelle Shocked, and various others. It would not be unusual to hear Bob Marley, Timbuk3, Bonnie Raitt, Happy Rhodes, Bruce Cockburn, 3 Mustaphas 3, Yo La Tengo, Don Henry, Poi Dog Pondering, Paul Simon, Lyle Lovette, kd Lang, and Crash Test Dummies during one show. Those of you who are interested in these artists (and a good mix of music, too :-) should check with your local public radio station and ask when the show airs. If they don't carry it, ask why not. Disclaimer: I am in no way connected to WXPN or World Cafe other than being a very satisfied listener, and a contributor during their fund drives. (and I've won two CDs so far!) I was able to see some things as they aired last week, but I also taped a bunch of things to watch later. In some ways it's better to watch these tapes. I can fast-forward through the commercials and the events I have no interest in (Volleyball? Thank you, no) and re-wind particularly interesting bits. I too find myself being *very* interested in sports that I normally wouldn't watch or care about, swimming and track & field in particular. Women's gymnastics is my favorite event, and I'm especially looking forward to the rhythmic gymnastics. I'm sure there are lots of other sports I'd find myself interested in if I let myself (not boxing, never boxing) but there's just not enough time! The time difference means that we get everything tape-delayed. The network here is doing a fairly good job of showing the most interesting bits, but I know I'm missing a lot anyway. Maybe someday we'll have a Satellite dish, and will be able to pick up CBC or even BBC coverage. Jeff, you said you went to Tower and they had no Happy. I was talking to Angel earlier and she mentioned that she was at Tower and they had multiple copies of all 5 CDs. I forgot to ask her which Tower it was, but she was just there the other day. How many Towers are there in the CD area? Has Tori already been to DC on this 2nd leg of the tour? If not, could someone give me the date so I can pass it along to Angal and Mike? Thanks! The Tori concert was *fantastic* as I expected. We met her after the show and I gave her a Warpaint cassette. I asked her tour manager if I could get a show ID and he said no :-(. I should have just asked Tori first, but I was trying to be nice. I understand this guy has a job to do, but it only would have taken 30 seconds at the most. I'm paranoid that this guy might have taken the Happy cassette away from Tori as soon as they were away from us. If anyone else happens to meet her and happens to remember, you might ask "How'd you like the Happy Rhodes album?" and report back on her reaction. As I gave the cassette to Tori, I said "This is a friend of mine and she likes your music so I wanted you to hear hers." I sounded better than "here's another woman who's compared to Kate Bush all the time." She remembered Chris and I from the last concert (!great memory!) so I thought she might take it a bit more seriously if I said that Happy was a friend of mine. It's true, anyway. I just wonder if the tour manager (beefy guy with an English accent) would let her keep it. That thought prevented me from giving her a cassette of Volume II, which I had in my hand, but decided against also giving her. Steve VanD, Tori is coming to Eugene, are you going to go? Here is a playlist: Erics's Song* Crucify Silent All These Years Precious Things Happy Phantom Tear In Your Hand Me And A Gun Winter Whole Lotta Love Leather Little Earthquakes (with a very interesting musical intro) First encore: Smells Like Teen Spirit Mother Second encore: China Angie The concert seemed very short, but maybe that's because I could have sat and listened to her for hours :-). The audience was very receptive and, although there was some talking near the back of the venue, it seemed slight to me. I was right up front, only a few feet away from her, the best seat in the house. I got there about 2 hours early and it was worth it to get such a good spot. My only complaint is that she didn't talk very much. In April she just yakked away, but this time she kept it to a minimum, abbreviating her stories for "Me And A Gun" and "SATY." The biggest treat, besides having such a wonderful seat, was that she had a real piano. In April she had an electric. We got to meet her after the concert and I was suprised that she actually remembered Chris and I. She's got a great memory! * Re: "Eric's Song" I'm not sure that's the name of it. In April she played a beautiful acappella Celtic-flavored song and I asked her what it's name was. That's what she told me. Since I didn't tape that concert, I can't be absolutely sure this was the same one, and I forgot to ask her after the show. I think it was Eric's Song only because it had the same feel, plus this is Chicago. The last time, she said she played Eric's Song for her boyfirend, who is from Chicago. Has she done this song elsewhere on this second tour? It was so nice to see Ectophiles Chip Lueck, Kiri Hargie, Michael Kaufman, Jorn Barger and Bob Kollmeyer there! I had a great time! The sound was fantastic (if maybe a touch too loud) and the band was in top form. They were able to play for an hour, which is more than I expected for an opening band. They played nearly every song from _Inertia_ plus quite a few never recorded songs. They didn't play anything from their earlier tapes, but that's OK. They've played around the Kansas City area for so many years and I imagine they're really tired of those older songs. Shelly, before I even mentioned it, Eric (the bass player) mentioned that you had taken over in his old job, and he was aware of the net connection! (btw, Big Hat were in Kansas City and Lawrence. Vickie asks: >Steve VanD, Tori is coming to Eugene, are you going to go? I just heard this recently on local Happy-playing radio station KAVE. Even more nifty, she's playing the WOW Hall, an old Eugene landmark (it is the old Woodworkers Of the World headquarters), and a much more interesting place for it than our modern but somewhat sterile Hult Center. In fact, I heard this during the concert calendar given during KAVE DJ Christina's boringly named "Women in Music" show. It was really cool last week, because shortly after I turned the radio on almost halfway through the show, she played "Babooshka", then a little while later played Meryn Cadell's "Job Interview", after which I called to request "Murder", which Christina shortly played, with a neat segue into Sarah McLachlan's "Into the Fire". But, to answer the question, yes, I am intending to go see Tori. I have to admit that I haven't really gotten into her music from the exposure I've had, although I like it enough, and find Tori interesting enough, that I am interested in seeing her live. Just recently I borrowed the Cocteau Twins album _Heaven or Las Vegas_ from my friend Steve. He was willing to part with it because he doesn't think it's their most interesting album, and recommended _Treasure_ as his favorite. I really like _Heaven or Las Vegas_ so far, though, which means I will be looking for more. ======================================================================== Subject: wheee! I was talking >to Angel earlier and she mentioned that she was at Tower and they >had multiple copies of all 5 CDs. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I really hope this is true; if so, it means that they're selling. I just got back from the Rockville Tower, and sho'nuff, they had one copy each of the 1st4 and several copies of _Warpaint_. Interestingly, the 1st4 were $13.99 each (AG's price) and _Warpaint_ was $14.99. I wonder why the markup? I can't imagine that AG is charging them more for that one CD. Is it because they expect it to sell more? Well, in any event, they now only have _Warpaint_ and the 1st3. ;-) After deciding that _if_ I got out there _and_ they had the albums _and_ I could convince myself to walk the already precarious financial tightrope, I'd buy _Rearmament_ because I just had to hear "'Til the Dawn Breaks" and "Crystal Orbs" and "Baby Don't Go," which are 3 of my 5 or 6 favorites. Then I got out there and saw all 4 CDs and spent 15 minutes agonizing before deciding to buy _Ecto_ instead. For one thing, I don't dislike a single song on _Ecto_, whereas we all know about "Box H.A.P." and I sometimes feel like some of the other songs on _Rearmament_ aren't quite up to snuff in some way (though there are plenty of times I listen to it and get chills from every single song...). And besides, while I'd _love_ a good copy of "Be Careful What You Say" (such a _great_ song!), the prospect of getting a Happy song I'd _never_ heard was just too much to resist. So I bought _Ecto_. It seems somewhat fitting. Almost exactly two years ago I did my first Happy transcription--"Don't Want To Hear It" for a friend who at school. While there were plenty of other *incredible* songs on my first Happy sampler, it was the songs on _Ecto_ that first caught my ear (the tape included every song from side B but "I Will Not Break Down"). It's hard to believe that was so long ago. Thanks, Vickie... Thoughts on the new covers: I was very nervous about seeing the VI&II covers. I kept hearing about how Happy was working out 'numbers' to integrate with the pictures and I had no idea what to expect. Whatever it was I expected, it wasn't what I saw. I absolutely love the VI and VII covers! Great! And the numeric masks help take away a bit of their fright factor. I dislike the _Rearmament_ cover; I think the sword is silly. The _Ecto_ cover is quite disturbing. I've always like the ghostly image, and one reason for that is that it's so benign. When you see more of the image though, it takes on a new character, one that's quite frightening. And it's also pretty wild to see the painting in focus! That too is pretty wild, and far more frightening than the original softened head shot. Obviously I don't need to comment on the Crazy Glue Accident cover shot...;-) Can't wait 'til I have the money to order the 1st3. In the meantime, now that I know where I can get 'em, maybe I can convince my sister to buy one of them... Tomorrow, it happens that I'll be biking near the DC Tower. I'll get to stop in and badger them about the CDs. "But your store in Rockville has them, and I don't have time to drive out there..." Mua ha ha!
