We were fortunate to have a table in the front for this concert. At other Fine Line concerts, the front row has not been the place to be since one can easily lose one's hearing for the rest of the week being close to the speakers. But for some reason, the sound guy *really* did a marvelous job last night and the music came through the best I can remember. The band was in marvelous form! For those of you who prefer to hear the music exactly as it sounds on a recording, this is the group for you. They were true to their CD, very little improvising going on, but that isn't an issue for me so it wasn't a distraction. The lead singer Mary (whose last name slips my mind...) seemed a bit nervous, her patter with the crowd just a bit stilted. That wasn't a big deal either. What *was* a big deal was their music. Their harmonies were absolutely seamless, very lush in a Clannad-like way. They played everything from their CD and a couple of new songs, one of which was vaguely country, the others being more like what one would consider October Project-ish. Mary told us at one point that the band is a *huge* fan of Anne Rice and that they'd submitted two of their songs, _Take Me As I Am_ and _Now I Lay Me Down_, for the _Interview With The Vampire_ soundtrack. Both were rejected, the band speculating that perhaps the person who rejected their songs was the same person who cast Tom Cruise as Lestat. I wasn't able to get a list of upcoming concerts (they didn't have one, which struck me as odd, or maybe I should have spoken with someone other than the guitar player...) but I do know they'll be in Madison WI today then out to LA to work on their next video (they described it as lots of tin foil on Malibu Beach, and an old man either flying a kite or playing with a model airplane), and then they will be off to Europe. Next up at The Fine Line is Alison Moyet! No specific date yet, just sometime in June. I sure won't miss that, I've been a fan of her's since the Yaz days. -- Cathy Guetzlaff Cray Research, Inc. guetzlaf@cray.com ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 27 Apr 1994 11:29:18 -0500 From: iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu Subject: Sarah get-together ATTENTION: It's a Sarah get-together before the Saturday concert in Chicago. Everyone is invited, and it's a great chance to fumble toward bonding, etc, etc., ad nauseum. Come, meet lots of people, and even meet our very own Steve Fagg, who is coming all the way from England! Prizes not included. :) The schedule for the day is that Sarah is doing an in-store at 12:30pm at Best Buy in Chicago, then we'll all hang out til an early dinner at 3pm at Gino's East, and finally head en masse to the Vic for one hell of a concert. Let's all meet at Best Buy, and those of you who don't want to meet there can meet us at Gino's East for dinner at 3pm. Anyone observing Shabbat, I guess it will have to be at the concert. :( I'm including directions to all of these places at the end of the message. So far I've heard from everybody above, which is a nice healthy group of Sarah fans. :) Anyone else is invited, of course! If you haven't ever met any one in ecto/fte in RL before, just look for me, a short red head with a blue ecto t-shirt on. Otherwise, if you are uncertain of how to get there, or want to go with someone, drop me e-mail and I'll arrange to meet you somewhere (I live right near Water Tower Place and the Old Water Tower) Directions (via El) to Best Buy: Take the Howard-Dan Ryan train (that's the red line) to the North/Clybourn stop (it's an A stop, so watch what you're taking). Get off, and walk away from the Crate & Barrel Outlet Store (it's a dangerous thing...) about 3 _long_ blocks. Best Buy is in the same shopping center on your right as a Great Foods. It's at the corner of North and Sheffield. Directions (via El) to Gino's East: (Note: I hope this is the one people were talking about!) Take the Howard-Dan Ryan train (the red line) to the Chicago stop. (This is only 2 stops south of the North/Clybourn stop) Get off and walk south (toward the lake and away from the YMCA) to Rush St. Make a right on Rush, and go 1 block to Superior. Make a left on Superior, and it's right there at 160 E. Superior. Look for a bunch of unruly types. :) If you want to drive, Best Buy has a really large parking lot, so you can leave your car there. Forget about driving to the Vic or Gino's...parking is non-existent or kinda expensive (especially near Gino's). You're much better off taking the El, imho. But, hey, if you're determined, drop me a line and I'll give you directions. ==> valerie iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu ============================================================================ iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu "Patience, Iago. I'll have to go home and listen to it and see what MMOH's contribution is. I most definitely remember her otherworldly wailing all over Morrissey's "November Spawned a Monster". Way, way cool. Throwing Muse's also have some tracks on some of the "Just Say ..." compilations. I know "Dizzy" is on one and something else catchy is another. "Fish" is on Lonely is and Eyesore, and is excellent! I spotted a few other backing vocals I was going to mention anyway, so ... On Murray Attaway's "In Thrall", Aimee Mann sings on one song, although I never would have noticed if i hadn't been reading the fine print. They are definitely backing vocals, and not at all notable. (MA is the ex lead singer for Guadalcanal Diary. The album didn't make much of an impression.) On a more interesting note, I found Peter Case's first solo album used. It always seems odd to me when I find something used that I have never seen new. I remember listening to this a number of times in college, and was surprised how familiar it sounded so many years later. Anyway, it's from 1986, and has one song with very obvious Victoria Williams vocals. They are prominant, and there is no way you wouldn't recognize them. There is also a song that he co-wrote with her (and a bunch of other folks) that she is not on, and a cover of the Pogues "Pair of Brown Eyes". This one I like a fair amount. I also got a Mary Coughlin single. I've never heard her before, and was quite intrigued. The primary song is "There is a Bed", but I liked the two other songs better. Anyone care to fill me in a bit on who she is? I drove through a blizzard coming back from the desert yesterday. Enough snow to coat the trees, ground and road. THe most snow I have seen in a few years, and yes, I am talking about San Diego County. (OK, some of SD county is over 4000 feet, which helps in the snow production, but I was still impressed.) It's on the last Morrissey album I actually liked, _Bona Drag_. MMOH doesn't do any harmonizing, but she does do some of that howling during a little break near the end of the song. Quite odd, but I like it. One thing I have to say for Morrissey. He picks great female artists to do additional vocals. Is an album listed? I'd like to look for this when we go to England. If it's an American release, then it's the first thing that has been released here since her first album "Tired And Emotional" was released here in 1988. I've talked about Mary quite a few times, the most recent being when I had a chance to interview her last fall. Her interview started off a series of interviews with others (Holly Cole, Iris DeMent, Jane Siberry, Heidi Berry and Kirsty MacColl) even though hers came completely by accident rather than by design. I've been a Mary fan since about 1988, when her first album ("Tired and Emotional") was released on Green Linnit in America. Here's what I wrote for Neile's Ectophile's Guide To Good Music series. Musicians: Richard Buckley - tenor and soprano saxophone Dick Farrelly - acoustic and electric guitar James Delaney - piano, organ and synths Paul Moore - bass guitar and double bass Robbie Casserly - drums This is a live album, recorded in February, 1993 at The Mean Fiddler in London. Mary is a wonderful live performer and this is a good one. She covers songs such as Sting's "Moon Over Burbon Street," Elvis Costello's "Upon A Veil Of Midnight Blue," ex-Pougues member Cait O'Riordan and Elvis Costello's song "Baby Plays Around," and Cole Porter's "Love For Sale." Another interesting tidbit about Mary is that she's an actress and a close friend of Neil Jordan. She appeared in his abysmal (thanks to the Hollywood editing factory) film "High Spirits" as Peter O'TOole's assistant. She also plays the harp in the film. There's no word on a possible appearance/song for his upcoming "Interview With A Vampire". She was also in another film of his, but I can't remember what it was off the top of my head. Mary's a wonderful singer, and a very nice person. I highly recommend "Tired And Emotional" (was listed as a cut-out in the last Green Linnet catalog) and "Under The Influence" because they're my favorites, but any of the albums (that people can find) are worthy of Ectophilic checking-out. A taste of Mary can be found on various tapes in Doug's TDS.
