I must go on ecto hiatus for the next few days, or I won't be able to get anything done, and this is my next-in-a-line-of hectic week(s). My first real Happyvangelizing mission seems to be somewhat of a failure. Austin singer Michele Solberg, to whom I gave a compilation of my own devising, thought Happy had a good voice, but was kind of put off of her Kate Bushy higher reaches. And I get the idea that she thinks Happy's music is a bit on the weird side (though she is supposed to be a fan of Jane, This Mortal Coil, and the Cocteau Twins!) I gave her a Happy card anyway, and told her that if she doesn't "get into" Happy, that I would hope that she would pass both on to someone who might enjoy Happy's brand of music. John H. Hmmm... some here said that a.m.a.f has quite a bit of Tori discussion. None of that appeared here. So maybe we have two distinct distributions of a.m.a.f, that thing happens if someone at an important site listens to Tim Pierce who most certainly send rmgroup messages for a.m.a.f as well as a.m.ecto (I definitely know the latter, and think I remember the former as well). I haven't tracked > this one down yet. Nope, not an EP, it is a full album. However, it remains unreleased in America. Import only. Early and developmental. Missing from Ethan's list is their next offering, "The Fat Skier" EP, which WAS released domestically, but don't even dream that it's in print anymore. It was tacked on to the UK "House Tornado", if you can get your hands on it. Also, somewhere around this time, they did a track for the 4AD compilation "Lonely Is An Eyesore". There is a video version of the compilation also. I believe they won an award of some sort for the video (I vaguely remember hearing this on 120 Minutes years ago). > _House Tornado_ -- the words "skewed" and "quirky" come instantly to > mind when I think of this album, but it definitely grows on you if you > give it a chance. Well, "House Tornado" is my personal favorite. Quirky indeed. True originals - there ain't nobody on the planet like TM at their peak. > _Hunkpapa_ -- my favorite TM album, where Kristen's experimentalism and > Tanya's pop leanings played off each other perfectly. The "commercial" TM. Or as close to commercial as TM can possibly be. Definitely the place I'd recommend starting with. > _The Real Ramona_ -- similar in style to _Hunkpapa_, just not *quite* > as good IMHO. Oh, I don't know if it's not *quite* as good. The first rumblings of Tanya coming into her own, "Counting Backwards" and "Hook in her Head". What's not to like? > _Red Heaven_ -- I haven't bought this, due to the storm of critical > indifference that greeted its release. "Red Heaven" is different. It's a stripped down TM, sorta the Seattle grunge version of TM. Like most TM albums, it takes some listening to, but it IS a good album. There is also "The Curse", a live album from the "Red Heaven" tour that has not been issued domestically. Interesting to hear the current band playing the old material somewhat differently. There are tracks on this available nowhere else. The important thing to note is that TM is most definitely NOT for everybody. The only similarity to "Hips and Makers" is Kristen's singing, which turns more than a few people off (I get the strangest looks when I bring her albums in to work). I'd try "Hunkpapa" and go from there. +########################################################################+ +###+ Paul Cohen, Philadelphia, PA +###+ +########################################################################+ +###+ P.COHEN@genie.geis.com +###+ PMCOHEN@aol.com +###+ +###+ 70703.3126@compuserve.com +###+ PMCOHEN@delphi.com +###+ +########################################################################+ ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 25 Apr 1994 23:19:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: cool mail, calm down etc. Hi! People are so cool. Today, totally out of the blue, I received a copy of a Tori Amos press kit in the mail. I think I know the person who sent it to me... he's not on the Net, but is a member of the music APA to which I am a regular contributor (plenty of Happyvangelization going on there, let me tell you! :), and he has a friend who works at VH-1, which is I guess where he got this thing. It's a collection of every article and review that has appeared in mass-circulation American newspapers and magazines since _UtP_ came out, and it's scary how little of it I don't already have, either on paper or on disk. :} Still, it's a Way Cool thing to have, and I can't believe someone I don't even know (really, he only joined this APA one issue ago!) thought to send it to me. Wow. I needed something to make this day not suck any more, too. Yay. Vickie snorted: > Well, since I gave her a Warpaint the first time I met her, and she >didn't recognize the name when you gave her RS (besides just getting a "vibe" >from the name) I'd tend to doubt it. I couldn't remember if you had managed to give her a Happy CD before or not. Maybe I didn't describe Sarah's reaction well enough: she stared at it really excited, jumped up and down going, "I *know* this name!!!" and seemed quite interested in it. Granted, that's not as positive a reaction as, say, "Oh yeah, I've got a copy of _Warpaint_ and we were just listening to it on the bus," but it's better than a cold "gee, thanks." I got the impression she'd end up listening to it just to help her figure out where she'd heard the name. Think positively. Maybe _Warpaint_ didn't stick in her mind, but something about, oh, "Summer" or the acoustic version of "Feed the Fire" (the line from RUTH, perhaps?) may make her sit up and take notice and pay closer attention. Then when she gets back to Vancouver she may notice her _Warpaint_ on the shelf and think, "Maybe I'll give this another try" and be won over at last. (Incidentally, since she ran out of hands, the disc spent the better part of her time with us shoved down the front of her jeans. I hope it enjoyed its time there. ;) >I'd considered giving her something if we met, but after your post, I decided >not to waste a CD. I'm *really* tired of giving away CDs to people who have >no intention of listening to them. I got a very good feeling from her reaction, actually. She did seem genuinely appreciative of the gift, and from what I've seen of Sarah so far, I don't think she's one to say "thanks so much" and then dump the gift into the nearest garbage can. She was certainly up-front enough in her conversations with the people who were there that night. Besides, I'm sure that after being on tour for as long as she has and being consumed with her own music day after day she'll get a craving for some new sounds eventually. And when she does, she won't even have to go shopping to find something new. >Don't mind me, I'm just in a pissy mood because HAPPY KEEPS GETTING IGNORED!! >By record companies, by music magazines, by other artists (Sarah, Tori, Kate, >Peter, Jane and all the others who have been given her music) except for >Andreas Vollenweider, by movie directors (Neil Jordan and David Lynch...PAY >ATTENTION!!!) and, it sometimes seems, by EVERYBODY ON THE F**KING PLANET!!! Well, if it makes you feel better, the stores in my area that carry Happy routinely sell out of her CDs, and I can promise you Tamar and I aren't going in every week to buy them all! I was amazed by the number of people in the aforementioned APA group who hadn't just heard of Happy, but already owned some of her music. I understand your frustration, but the days *are* gone when only those on ecto know who the hell Happy Rhodes is. Keep that in mind, maybe it'll help. Your samplers for the Kon look good, by the way... >I wish I had Happy Rhodes buttons to wear :-( Anybody have a button machine? Anybody know where to rent one for a weekend? >Happy should come. One song...her voice and her guitar would do more than >I could possibly achieve. Personally, I think the Kon would be the wrong place for Happy to perform. I found it utterly impossible to take any of the "performers" at the last one seriously - they all sucked rocks. I devoutly hope this year's crop is better, or I'm going to spend that entire segment of the day hiding in the bathroom. Gack. Valerie noted: >*laugh* Yes, I caught Kristen on Conan, and almost died laughing. She >just looked so _tiny_ next to Conan. She looked like a midget. But the >song was pretty good. I won't rave like Meredith, but she was definitely >good. Was I raving? Didn't mean to. Just expressing some appreciation, is all... She is tiny, isn't she? :) Alex reported: >New on MTV's 120 Minutes last night were (among others): > >Tori Amos' video for "Cornflake Girl". I bet it'll get played a lot. "Well, Meredith, you won't be needing the VCR this week, so I guess I'll take it home now." "Sure, woj, all the interesting late-night musical appearances are over." Argh!!! Ethan quoted from the Web: >What the Cat Dragged In >New Haven, Conneticut, USA > >An eclectic modern rock quartet consisting of guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, >and assorted other appurtenances. Natalie Merchant meets John Hiatt meets >David Byrne meets Fish meets Maria McKee meets John Prine meets Elvis >Costello meets Sting. Whoa. Never heard of these guys... they sound interesting. I'll have to check them out. Allow me to plug yet again another New Haven band, Field of Vision. I finally bought me one of their CDs yesterday, and it's quite good. I don't know why I like them so much, but I do - they're kind of like Concrete Blonde meets a tub of Valium. (Now there's a helpful description. :P) I don't know if their CD is available outside of Connecticut, but if it is, check it out and let me know what you think. It's called _Groceries_, and is on Lava Music out of West Haven, CT. Another CD I got yesterday is Shelleyan Orphan's _Humroot_. These folks have been mentioned here before, but allow me to add another affirmative vote. This disc especially reminded me of the Sundays, dunno why... it's good stuff. In the meantime I heard from other people that they are not very reliable at all, they lie to you about how rare stuff is, they are expensive, highly unprofessional and if there's something wrong with the order you might as well forget about your money. I think it's a good idea if you stay clear of the place and I know that I am not going to order from them again! Just a short outline of what got me so upset: I ordered two items from them by fax, one was a Press Kit which I would like to sell to somebody else now, the other item was the God Remix promo. The next day I heard that the price they charged for the CD (they claimed that it's very rare, which is *not* true) is ridiculous and that somebody could find it cheaper for me. I sent another fax straight away asking them to forget about the CD but just send me the Press Kit. In both faxes I asked them to confirm the order by return fax. They never replied at all. The next thing I know is that about 10 days later I recieved a package in the mail. The Press Kit was very dis- appointing for me, as I already had the stuff that was in it, but guess what, the CD was there, too! I sent them another fax, telling them politely that I am not happy with the order and that I would like to return it to them. I know that there are laws in Germany that you can return mail order stuff within a certainl period of time, so I figured that there must be something like that in America, too. Well, guess what, they never got back to me. The next day I was so upset that I sent them another, less friendly fax. Still, no reply - same with my message on their answering machine. I heard from somebody in England who had very similar problems with them. I hope you might possibly learn from my bad experience and save yourself a lot of trouble. Oh dear, that can be a problem. Repeated doses of Liz Phair are the only thing I've found that can get Melissa out of my mind once she worms her way in there, and even that's not guaranteed to work. :) So, what did you want to know? You've probably already picked up her Atlantic debut, _Massive Blur_. I had the great fortune to see Melissa three times in two weeks when she came through here a while back (at the Stanford coffee house, a San Francisco club, and a Tower Records appearance where she was snowed under by Lemonheads fanatics there to see Evan Dando). She's a pleasant, self-deprecatingly funny person both onstage and off, and while playing she attacks her guitar with a ferocity that usually results in a couple broken strings. She does a song in concert called "Girls With Guitars (The Juliana Hatfield Song)" which also appears on a promo which Meredith sent to my friend Lisa (thanks Meth!), but the concert version is longer and much more hilarious. She's taken to saying in concert, "I'm Melissa Ferrick; please buy my record so I can make another one," and judging from the half-dozen-or-so new tracks she's been playing, that second album will be excellent indeed. She's moving from Boston to California, which is bad news for Bostonians (second only to the Tribe breakup) but happy news for west coast ectophiles. (Melissa knows about ecto, by the way, and was looking into getting a network connection last time I spoke with her.) Hope everything is ok.] Strike up another coup in the ecto column. I recently acquired October Project and I must say I do like it very much. My single question is thus: The centerpiece of that CD is without a doubt Bury My Lovely. I am trying to figure out exactly what it's about. Here are some theories: 1) The singer's lover has died and they're trying to put it behind them... thus (I will) bury my lovely (dead lover). 2) The singer died and they're hoping their lover can get over it... thus (I hope you can) bury (imperative), my lovely (my lover)... i.e. bury *me* 3) There is no death involved... a relationship has ended for some reason and the singer is trying to deep-six the memories and scars 4) Again, no death. The singer is issuing a command to the former lover to "come on, please bury, my lovely"... this would lend more of a tinge of tragedy to it... like the singer *had* to leave for reasons beyond their control and perhaps the lover didn't know it was coming, or *thinks* they're dead or gone forever... almost like the singer is a ghost (perhaps metaphorically if not literally). I kinda like #4 the best, but I also kinda feel like I'm missing something. Mr. Burka... care to enlighten me (again :-)? Anyways it's a *great* song. I love their sound. I also recently acquired the xmas show from the TDP. My taste for Jane Siberry is still not great as many people here are (I respect her music and talent and esp. like her latest album, but her voice and attitude that comes thru in the music can be annoying) -- even in this special, she sounds (esp. when she speaks) rather cynical and mockish (which is why I really would have liked to see her on her latest tour to see if I could dispell my impression or reinforce it); *BUT* virtually *all* the other performers I *love*. Victoria Williams is undoubtedly the standout on this tape and she shines brighter than any of the Canadians. Her voice is *so* *cool*. I would *love* to see her live. (Same with happy... I'd love to *see* a person actually producing that voice; it's so wildly good that it's hard to imagine someone actually doing it.) MMO is very cool. Has she ever produced anything other than Miss America? Why not? And of course I love Holly Cole (really wish I could catch one of her shows). I don't know much about Rebecca Jenkins. Does she have an album? I love her speaking voice when she says hello at the very beginning of the show, though. Thanks again to Doug Burks and whoever recorded this off the radio and to Vickie who if I'm not mistaken sent in the MMO EP which is also on that tape and is also fantastic. Later, muchachos. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 Apr 1994 17:41:21 -0400 (EDT) From: CHAINSAW Subject: don't bounce back to me again!!! > >Hi.
