This very much reminds me of the bleakest part of my Happy fandom. I'll just give the short version. Imagine my suprise when, after I had found and fallen in love with the music of "Happy Rhodes", I found out that she had given up being a solo artist and was now(then) the "Rhodes" in "Bartlett/Rhodes"!! I didn't like that idea, not at all! No more Happy Rhodes?? Never ever again??!! I had 4 albums by Happy Rhodes and that's it? "Happy Rhodes" as a solo artist was no more? Gone? Forever??? :-( :-( :-( Happy was serious about it. She had made her decision and that's the way the situation was at the time. I have to admit that after I heard the Bartlett/Rhodes demos, I completely lost interest in Happy's career. Something in her music had dramatically changed. I wasn't sure what it was, but I knew that it didn't interest me as much. I still played Happy's music on my radio show, I still talked about Happy on rec.music.gaffa, and I still played Happy for everyone I met, but I had no interest in promoting "Bartlett/Rhodes" at all, and I never talked about them. I had nothing against Kevin, who is an excellent musician/artist in his own right, and who is so very important to Happy's music and personal life. I just saw it as the loss of an interesting, talented solo female artist. Besides, she was listed *second*?? Why is it that way? Bartlett/Rhodes, John & Mary, Dave & Barbara (Stewart & Gaskin).... Obviously, Happy changed her mind about being a solo artist, and I changed my mind about not being interested in her career. The release of Warpaint changed everything. Believe it or not, I was actually *worried* about hearing it. What if I didn't like it as much as I didn't like the B/R demos? A preview cassette came in the mail while I was at work, and Chris actually listened to it first and called me, telling me not to worry :-). Right! Of course I loved Warpaint, and everything was back to normal. The strangest thing about all this is that I can now go back and listen to the B/R demos and I actually like them. *Now*, it's hard, if not impossible to explain what was going on in my head then. Spring is here, folks! The cherry trees around the park where I live are in full bloom, as are all the flowers and today it was gorgeous and sunny and warm and I'm sleeping with my window open tonight for the first time all year, and I'm happy. Yay. :) I'm also behind in mail, but when am I not? Jeffy (happy birthday, you!) wondered about my playlists: >What does the [r] mean? Request. Sorry - I meant to clarify that at the end, but my brain slipped. Neile confessed: >Okay, time for confession here, folks. I have some form of brain loss >that makes me unable to find anything of interest in Heidi Berry. Hey, we're tolerant of everyone here, no matter what the disability. ;) Seriously, though, so what? I'm sure you think I have some sort of brain loss because I don't like some of the stuff you rave about... it's not brain loss. It's just a difference of opinion, and there's nothing wrong with that so long as you respect the differing opinions of others, which I know you do, so there. :) Neal reminisced: >Near the end of the show, the band left (notice the >similarity to my other epiphany!) and she sat down at the >piano to play "Verdi Sings". Actually, it's "Verdi Cries", but that's neither here nor there. :) I had a feeling your epiphany had to do with this song... the first time I saw it performed live I had a similar feeling, even though I'd heard the song countless times on the album. It's such a beautiful song, and Natalie really gets into it live. Or got into it, I guess I should say. >Oh, and Meredith, looks like you gritted your teeth and actually >played some Nancy Griffith on your show! Was it too horrible? To tell you the truth, I didn't get a chance to pay any attention to it- I needed something that was less than 3 minutes long to take me through to the end of my show, and that was on the compilation and fit the time bill perfectly. I spent the whole time it was on cuing up the Kate song that was to end the show and discussing with the producer of the upcoming news show when they were to hit the air and which tapes they wanted put where and all that sort of thing. So it ended up being quite painless, actually. :) Klaus originated: >There isn't a lot which beats sitting in warm sunshine, near 5500 >year old temples, reading "Avaryan Rising" (the 1st2of4 at least). :) >I noticed some talk about Sarah videos. Are we sure this is really the "Hold On" video on the _No Alternative_ video compilation? It's hard to tell, but it seems by the way it's listed under the "short films" section that it may well be a short film by someone else with "Hold On" in the background, and not the actual video Sarah made for the song. She played the most boring song on her album, but I guess this was necessary, since most of the interesting ones have Naughty Words in them. :) She was clearly very, *very* nervous - her voice was wavering so much I expected her to totally lose it at any time. I kinda felt sorry for her. (And poor Paul Schaffer had nothing to do- ooh, what a shame. ;) Did anyone catch Kristen Hersh on Conan O'Brien on Friday night? I just barely managed to capture the event on tape, since I wasn't aware that the broadcast time of the show would be pushed way back because of reports on Nixon's death, but I did get it, without having to suffer through the world's worst hour of television to get to it. How many people can fit in your living room? 25? 30, if they're all good friends? You get the idea. But to be truthful, I'm not so sure Happy could fill a larger place on her own in Connecticut. I'm afraid I haven't played it as often as I'd like because I haven't had woj's CD to hand as often as I'd like, but I have played it whenever I've been able. Lie and say it's been consistent from week to week. O:) >Did anyone text-capture this? I'd love to see it, not having been able to >participate. Yep- I've got the entire transcription. It's pretty long, but I'd be more than happy to send it to you if you want. Just let me know. It's pretty scary and funny all at once. >But you've yet to meet Jane, and Mae Moore, and Margot! :) No rest for the >evangelical, Meredith. :-) :) Yeah, there's tons of people I wouldn't mind meeting, but I've pretty much covered the pantheon now. (I'm not so sure I could handle meeting Jane. It would just be... Too Weird, y'know?) My next goal is getting to interview my pantheon... I know someone who is seriously considering writing a book on Tori and knows I'm ready to help him at a moment's notice, so that's actually a remote possibility, but as for Sarah and Kate, I'm pretty much screwed on those fronts. Sigh. I found a new record store today - Exile on Main Street in Branford, CT. It's a pretty good store, run by people who are seriously into Tori and Kate and Sarah et al. They had the most complete collection of Tori's singles I've ever seen - I finally got the "China" single, so I have "Flying Dutchman" on CD now! Yay! They also had disc 2 of "The Red Shoes", but I didn't feel like springing for it, especially since their prices were a bit high for my tastes. Their Sarah collection was quite sparse, but they said that was because they can't keep her stuff in stock, which is just what I want to hear. :) I was in a hurry to get to the radio station, but the next time I'm in there I'm going to ask them if they've ever heard of Happy - they'd be the perfect place to stock her CDs. (Anybody have the name of Aural Gratification's Northeast distributor?) If anyone out there needs any Tori singles, let me know, and the next time I'm in there I can pick them up for you. They're $11.98 each, though- be warned! I leave you this evening with a tidbit from the Voice of Experience: Don't try to do a cute segue between Kate's "Night Scented Stock" and Tori's "The Waitress" without remembering to start fading "NSS" out before "TW" begins. The resulting change is rather abrupt, and a bit more confusing for the listener than intended. :} Playlist up next... I'd considered giving her something if we met, but after your post, I decided not to waste a CD. I'm *really* tired of giving away CDs to people who have no intention of listening to them. I've also decided that giving Happy CDs to other women performers is the worst waste of all. I get the impression that women in the music business don't really care about other women artists. I don't know if it's something about a competitive nature, or what. Probably "or what" but what that "what" is, I have no idea. (To ward off possible "what about Tori and PJ & Bjork? It's inevitable -- as soon as a newsgroup is created, you get lots of obnoxious, immature people who like to post just to hear themselves talk, and have nothing of value to contribute. Ecto, the mailing list, is beautiful because everyone has so much of interest to say. Please, let's not ruin this by opening ourselves up to posts like, "She's not alternative!" I, for one, will refuse to read a.m.e, and will continue to support this mailing list. ==> valerie ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where. Feel free to send me things you'd like to have added. -- jessica (jessica@ns1.rutgers.edu)
