Well, I'm behind as usual, but I have to tell you all about my evening yesterday. :) There was a bit of an ecto-gather in Westchester County, New York last night, as woj, footah, Jess, Dave Steiner, Patricia (non-Ectophile who is a friend of Greg and Jessica's from Rutgers), Mike Riccio, and I converged on Dave Torok's beautiful and spotless apartment for "stumbling towards concert", or the pre-Sarah wine-n-cheese. Much fun was had by all, and we squoze into two cars to make our way toward SUNY Purchase (pardon me, "Purchase College") to see Sarah McLachlan and her band live, some of us for the third time this tour. :> We got there shortly before the opening act was due to begin, which for the next few days isn't the Devlins (they're shooting a video in California this week), but some guy-with-guitar from New York City whom we had no desire to see, especially after he took the stage and we could hear him out in the lobby. So we amused ourselves by chatting with Crystal, Sarah's good friend and T-shirt et al. vendor, who remembered me and woj from the Hartford and New York shows. :) We got some interesting tidbits out of her, namely that the concert that was recently taped for the Canadian Pay-Per-View to be aired next Friday is going to be mixed for another live EP (no one has a clue when this will be released). We later found out that this EP will also contain "unplugged" tracks from a jam session that happened in New Orleans a couple weeks ago, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I asked Crystal why it took four months for _FtE_ to get released in the States, and she gave the best answer yet: "Because we're Canadian and you're not." :) Then she explained that you have to tour right after the album comes out or there's no point, so the album got released in Canada, they toured there, then it came out in the US and they're touring here, next comes Europe and then Australia etc. (I asked her if the tour is going to go Down Under, but I don't think she heard me... sorry, Anthony! :( ) That certainly makes sense, and is a much better reason than "legal wrangling"! Finally it was time to take our seats, which although they were quite far back were excellent - *dead* center. The stage was big and perfect for the show, so they could employ their full arsenal of visual effects, and the acoustics were great, too. There were a few teeny problems with the sound here and there, but they actually worked in spots (except when Sarah strummed the first note of "Ice" and something very weird happened, eliciting a shocked, "Oh dear... Good Heavens!" from her before it went away :), so it was okay. The set list and stories were exactly the same as always (I wonder if they're bored yet?), but the band members were noodling a bit and embellishing here and there, which kept things interesting. Sarah's gotten even better at wanking on her guitar. :> She even brought out new clothes - gone were The Grey Wool Pants, replaced by what looked to be red silk trousers with a black tunic-thing on top. Chic. But far and away the highlight of the show was Sarah's voice. Gone are the throat ailments, and she was having a wonderful time up there, so her voice really soared and dipped and swooped and slid delightfully off-key and back on again, and sometimes she belted out lines with such power I got chills. Many times I caught myself shaking my head in disbelief, and others were doing the same. She's incredible. Words cannot describe... wow. The audience was great - standing O's all around, and there was nothing but positive energy in the hall. It really showed through in the band's perform- ance, too. Afterwards we took a few minutes to come back to earth, then wandered back into the lobby and made a lot of noise. :> We decided to find the buses and hang out to see if we could talk to Sarah, and we found not only the buses, but the most beautiful tractor-trailer truck ever, which of course was for the equipment. Imagine a truck built by Rolls-Royce and encased in white space-age material, and you've got this thing. It was spotless, too. We were admiring it when Dave Kershaw came along, so we snagged him to sign CDs and posters (with my Sharpie- never leave home without one :), and while using the front right wheel well for a desk he got a smudge on the truck. In indelible ink. Whoops. :) Of course, whenever another band member came along we took them over to the spot to sign our stuff, and were sure to point out that the spot was Dave's fault. ;> We managed to talk briefly to Dave and Ash and Camille (who is very shy), and at length with Luc, who is not only shorter than Sarah (the whole band is small, come to think of it) but *really* cute, and a very, very sweet guy. We weirded him out in attempting to describe the Internet to him, and I totally blew his mind when I told him that the mailing list dedicated to discussion of Sarah is run off a machine in Australia! He told us some interesting tales of the Vancouver and Winnipeg music scenes, and was impressed that we knew so much about Canadian artists and were into so many of them. He mentioned an artist from Vancouver with whom he has played and recorded, who is putting out her own material and trying to make a name for herself: Vede Hille (I think I messed up her first name, but that's the general idea). Anybody from that area know anything about her? Luc also told us about the New Orleans jam session, and said the version of "Elsewhere" that came out of it has to be heard to be believed. I can't wait for the EP... waah! Hey, Chicagophiles! Those of you who are going to see Sarah next weekend, do us a favor and chant "Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuc" when Sarah introduces him at the end, okay? And if even one of you yells "Use the Force, Luke!" that will be enough for him to know that we weren't kidding when we said we could get the news out instantaneously -- that's our secret signal to him, no kidding. So some or all of you do that, and please post his reaction, okay? Thanks! Finally Sarah came out, after a grueling hour and a half with record company folk backstage. Someone asked how she was doing and she said she was so exhausted she was about to keel over, but that didn't stop her from making sure she talked to everyone and signed everything that people had to sign. She remembered me from the Nettwerk chat session when I said I was the one who had made the rude comment about computer stalkers - I'm not sure if she remembered me for a good reason or bad (though I think good, because she said she thought that comment was really funny), but it was cool anyways! Sarah's a sweet, genuine, gracious person, and it was great to be able to talk to her even for a minute or two. But that's not all... we even got to do some Happyvangelizing! :) I gave Sarah my copy of _RhodeSongs_, saying that I'm pretty sure she'll enjoy it. She seemed genuinely appreciative of the gift, and when she looked at the cover she said, "Wait. I know this name." It took us a few minutes to convince her that Happy really hasn't ever opened for her -- after that, Sarah stared at the CD for a few seconds going, "God, I wish I knew why this is so familiar to me! Why am I getting such a vibe off of this???" I had enclosed a note with my e-mail address, asking her to please have someone at Nettwerk drop me a note to let me know how she liked it. Dunno if I'll ever hear from her, but it's worth a try, right? There were a few other people who hung around as well, two of whom were from Manhattan and had missed the last train from White Plains. We talked to them about Happy and other music while we were waiting, and after Sarah disappered into the bus to eat her pizza and sleep they asked us if we could give them a ride back to White Plains. So Dave, woj, these two guys and I squoze into Dave's Eclipse (which was, erm, interesting) and on the ten-minute or so ride back to White Plains exposed them to Happy's music via Dave's tape of _Equipoise_. Both were quite impressed, and said they would definitely check her out the next time they were in Tower. Then it was time to drive back home without falling asleep, which turned out to be easier than I'd feared, since I was so wired from the whole evening. It was no trouble to fall asleep as soon as I got home at 2:30, though, and *really* hard to get up for work this morning! Ugh. But it was all worth it. Now I've met and talked to Happy, Tori, Kate, and Sarah... I can die content. :> +===========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA meth@delphi.com| +===========================================================================+ |"and there is a love that's inherently given a kind of blindess offered to | | deceive and in that light of forbidden joy oh I know I won't receive it " | | - Sarah McLachlan, "Wait" | +===========================================================================+ ======================================================================== From: Ethan_Straffin@next.com (Ethan Straffin) Date: Thu, 21 Apr 94 20:57:55 -0700 Subject: Re: goodbye (for now) ecto Delete now if you're not interested in the newsgroup issue! Why? Because he said that she was the "French Kate Bush," and since I love la langue francaise, and the Lady Miss Bush, I thought I'd give Ms. Farmer a try. I found _Ainsi Soi Je..._ and _Dance Remixes_. _Ainsi Soi Je..._ was $26.99 (for one CD), and _Dance Remixes_ was $29.99 (for two CDs), so I chose the better bargain. It is indeed an album of dance remixes, but when the first song came on, I felt immediately that there is a vast difference in the way French and American people classify music. The first song is called "We'll Never Die," and is listed as a Techno mix. Not hardly! This one is way too slow to be considered Techno, and might I point out that there are simply too many lyrics, as well. Okay, skipping through to a song I might find more interesting, I very much enjoyed "Tristana," which I took to be a woman's name (since "triste" means "sad," perhaps this is a song about a sad woman?). Other favorites include: "Sans Contrefacon" (Without Counterfeiting) "Sans Logique" (Without Logic) "Pourvu Qu'elles Soient Douces" (Provided That They're Mild) "Regrets" "Beyond My Control" - this one is the most ecto-friendly, IMHO and "Desenchantee" (Disenchanted) My thoughts on the woman in general are warm. I appreciate her voice (mid-soprano range), and I like the image she projects in the pictures (short, red hair, she's dressed in gym clothes and shown in various weight-lifting poses in the booklet). She writes most of her own words, but the music is entirely composed by Laurent Labouratt (I'm not sure of the last name, it's from memory, please be kind to my mistakes), who also arranges and mixes the majority of the material. Although Eurodisco is somewhat tamer than the current crop of House, Hip Hop and Hi-NRG mixes we have here in the US, there certainly were songs I found very danceable, and the overall experience was a good one. As for the Kate Bush reference, perhaps it is as Marcel said yesterday - that the local press makes the analogy because of her theatrical live shows. She looks nothing like Kate, nor does her sound bring Kate to mind. Some of her songs, however, do fit well with the Happy Rhodes catalogue ("Je T'aime Melancholie", for example), but Mylene wants us to dance our depression away, I guess (now remember, Marcel said that Mylene does have ballads on some of her other albums, and this one is just my first impression). Okay, I've said enough. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: 22 Apr 94 18:17:19 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: adventures in cheeseland Just a whole bunch of cool stuff going on in and around chicago these days. After missing 2 Dar Williams shows last weekend, one a house concert just blocks from my abode (I knew about it but just couldn't make it -- such is life -- 't makes the ones I do get too that much more special ;-]), I discovered, via the good folk on folk_music, that Dar'd be openin' for one Ani DeFranco in Beloit, WI at Beloit college. Well, whoopdy do! Why? Because I knew *zero* about Ani except that a number of well-respected people (not including whatever's been mentioned about her here which I do not recall at all) have been hoopin' and a'hollerin' 'bout Ani for a good while now. So, after getting directions from a way cool dude named Ian Shaw at Beloit College, I headed off after work on Wed. for the WI/IL state line. Now for those of you who are not in the know (and knowing ecto, that won't be many :}{) Beloit is just *barely over the border just past Rockford, IL, off of I-90. I read in my AAA guide that 150 years ago or so an *entire* town in New Hampshire uprooted itself and move, lock stock and bagel, to Beloit, Wisconsin. The first thing they did was found the college (it was founded by Yale alums). So, unbeknownst to me, I had stumbled into a location-warp time-suckage tunnel-thingy and I was actually in a well-hidden secret corner of New England! Cool, cool. Thanks to Ian's ace directions, I landed right next to Pearsons hall where the concert was. As I entered I was struck by the numbness of the student body, for the concert-chamber had not yet been opened for admittance and students were ambling in the hall beneath. They all looked stoned or worse; completely separate from reality, thus augmenting my already surrealistic other-worldly quease, having come straight from work. They wore odd, bland, unconsidered clothing, moved is a quasi-haze, spoke only sparingly -- I had fun watching them hover. Or is this what a small liberal arts college is like? I wouldn't know having never attended or visited one. (What? No Big Ten football team? Less that 40 fraternities? P-shaw!) After what seemed like about 20 minutes (and it was) the portals sprung open and the throng came alive with polite vigor. A young (well, they were all really young, what can I say) red-head from Iowa sat down next to me in my primo seato spoto, and I asked about the college. She seemed pretty with it for an Iowan. (Ouch. That smarted.) Well, she pointed out Ian Shaw (who I'd never met) and told me this was a big crowd for cafe series. The next day, apparently, was "appreciate the spring day" or something like that, and classes were not in operation. Party time. Anyways, not much later, Dar came on. She seemed really delicate, barely able to support the weight of the guitar, and though good, her entire performance had a precipitous feel to it, like she was about to be overcome by a stand-offish guitar string and succomb without much of a fight. She said she's been having so much fun that she'd been forgetting to get nervous, but I noticed her fingers trembling she made the chords and wilcoxed the tunings. She played very lightly but the singing was quite consistent (aside from some mic waiver). She neglected to play my two favorite songs, The Great Unknown, and This is Not the House that Pain Built, but she did explain and play a number of others. I didn't quite understand the songs, and her explanations, while vivid, didn't quite help either. Nonetheless I still at least marginally enlightened. And the crowd seemed to like it, which is important. I spoke to her later about the two songs she didn't play and she spelled them out as best she could. I told she spoke the same way she wrote: I *almost* understood the song lyrics and I likewise only almost understood her elaborations. I didn't want to be too much of a nuisance so I didn't push it. I told her someone I knew who also went to Wesleyan said she remembered her, but she didn't know you meth, though I did tell her about your radio show and she seemed mildly amused. (That last word is a bit too animated for her reaction but it sounds good in the sentence so I'll leave it there. You get the idea.) One reason I even mentioned that was because she looked/reminded me like/of meth somehow. Same sort of facial expression, perhaps. Though I've only met meth once and probably forget exactly how she looks. OK, yup. As for Ani... I was blown a-way. She was nothing like I thought she would be and the contrast with Dar was almost laughable. Ani *attacks* her guitar, lets it all hang loose, is *so* at ease, says all kinds of funny non-sequitors and half-sentences, and she had a drummer. That's right, a folk drummer. Canadian, to boot. I love it. Anyways, I'd never heard any Ani (ani Any?) before and it was like no music (folk or otherwise) I'd heard previously (no small feat for one with 2 walls full of music) and I liked it alot. This is unquestionably ecto-fare... it really is more rocky that anything else. And the attack style *did* remind me a bit of Joan Osborne's CD5 (blue million miles) which is also very unique. Ani has lots of CDs and I *know* one day I will own them all, but I have none yet. I don't want to know which one's better or anything like that, though, I'd like to see for myself. Let the mystery be. It's more fun that way. But I would certainly recommend all you folks to get out there and see Ani if you get the chance. So that was my adventure in cheeseland. Don't forget, Moxy Fruvous at Schuba's on Wed. (hope there are still tix left)... and I'll see y'all at Sarah too. If any chicago ecto person is up for it, Listen Up! and the Acafellas (from UofC) are performing for free at north pier this sunday starting probly about 1:30pm or 2. How was the acap sweepstakes? Long but good. 15 groups. We didn't place, but we were very happy with our performance. And for any acappella fiends out there, the annual NU Harmony Fest is happening at lakefill on Apr. 30. Last year was great so I'd recommend it. (It is also free.) That is the day of Sarah for those keeping track. I *liked* Liz Phair on Letterman and I will buy her album. Very catchy. Tootles guys and gals. Stay wealthy. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 22 Apr 1994 18:31:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Sampson Subject: WHUS update Not that everyone's dying to know what happens at WHUS, but since I never get enough time/energy to post my play lists, I figure I have some bandwidth coming :) There WILL be a quiz after..... The Accoustically Sound DJ is such a big HR fan, now, that, when I tuned into his show last Sunday I heard words to this effect..... "....and before that we heard a couple by Happy Rhodes, by request; which I'm more than happy to oblige. We now have all of Happy's CDs except Ecto, which I hope arrives soon......" Kathy, my SO, looked at me as if to ask "What have you done to this poor man?". Our highest/most unrealistic goals for the not too distant future include having her out to Connecticut sometime for a show....I figure, we should possibly double team the area with Meredith's help....METH, you out there???? Let's talk.... Of course, the BIG QUESTION, is this.....IS she, in fact, planning on touring any time soon.....Vickie? Meredith? Woj? Jessica?? BTW, Steve Fagg, I met Angela Baldo at the station the other day...she donated to our Radiothon, and has been hanging around the "Labyrinth of Sound" DJ, Julie.....For those who don't know (including me, until Angela told me, as I don't logon to IRC) Angela is on the IRC, and was Happyvangelized by Steve Fagg..... She relates the story of Steve sending her a sampler, and following up with the question, Well, did you get any CDs, to which she was able to respond...."I did better than that, I got a new stereo on which to play them!". Score one for Steve in the HR convert game. I'll be awaiting an informed opinion as to Happy's likelihood WRT touring soon....I'll be here, I'll be....well, y'know. Oh, yeah, BTW.....WOMAD will be at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on July 17.....Meredith???? Any Albany/Upstate NY/Boston-Based Ectophiles.....Tix go on sale Saturday May 7....I'm getting mine at Filene's Box office......Who else is going... .----------------------------------------------------------------------. ./| ...hopes and dreams... | | |/| ...notes and themes... | Chris Sampson | |/| ...skill and schemes... | chris@neuron.uchc.edu | |/| ...ppy Rho... | | |/`-----------------------------------------------------------------------' |///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// `------------------------------------------------------------------------' ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
