Bob writes: |manager Susanne White today. Seems they are really hoping this fanzine |thing will work out. It would be a good thing for Happy to have a Fanzine, |believe it or not it could bring her some clout in the music industry. |Susanne called today to ask me to ask all of you to please support Sharon's |efforts in bringing Rhodeways to fruition. It seems the response thus far |has been zilch. Zero. Nada. Nothing. (Warning: this is a just my opinion and it may change at any time without notice.) I have no plan of subscribing to this fanzine. In fact, I have never subscribed to any fanzine: not Kate Bush, not anyone. In general, I like looking at them... they are very nice. *But* I feel that a) I spend enough cash on CDs already, b) it is the music, not the trivia and interviews that I am most interested in, c) I get all the important information by email which is much more efficient and cheaper, and d) I don't really see much benefit for the artist from a fanzine. Why? Well, I don't know about clout in the music industry but how many *new* fans (read: CD-buyers and concert-attenders) are you going to get from a fanzine? Will anyone but a die-hard fan who has already spent plenty on an artist subscribe to this? True, the internet takes the place of any fanzine (for me, at least). I'll be happy to be on a free mailing list (I'm on many) but as far as zine's go, I'd rather spend my money directly on the artist. | Sharon is a true fan and though she lacks computer access at the moment |will be doing her best to join us in the future. She was hoping that we |ectophiles would be the base of the new fanzine, This sounds to me like a really faulty assumption. But maybe the rest of you will prove me wrong. |and that it might spread |out from its core to a wider distribution than the net can do at this time. Aren't we already telling all our friends about happy? | I confess that I too have ignored this fanzine. I understand that |Jessica has been hoping to get Ecto into the print world for some time, |and feel her disappointment in Rhodeways starting up. Yet I hope we |can all pull together, for this is for Happy most of all. Please, folks, |if you can spare the money, let's try to get Rhodeways going. Sharon has |already invested in stationary and printing, and would be more than happy |to receive any snailmail from us with any input whatsoever. Should you |find it in your hearts to subscribe, please feel free to enclose a letter |on the topic of your choice. I for one can go a ways toward explaining |Ectosynchronicity; others here have other experiences to share... Perhaps |an article on driving the entourage around Detroit would be fun. Perhaps |Doug can offer to be the editor of the Rhodeways/Ecto classifieds...or a |contributing editor... Well, I hope it works out for Sharon. I have nothing against her. But expecting ectophiles to contribute and subscribe to something that gives them virtually no new information and alot of rehash of stuff we talked about 2 years ago... well, I dunno. Then again, I have the same opinion of Homeground and KBC, etc. etc. | Please give it some thought, folks. It would mean a lot to Susanne, |so I have a feeling it might mean a lot to Happy too. Does anyone > know why the movie was released earlier in France? For a start, it had big censorship problems in the US, which made necessary a decision whether to cut the film for an R rating or let it out as an NC-17 or unrated. No such problems were met with in Europe, or Australia for that matter. The film bombed anyway, though I can't comment as I have not seen it yet. I'll catch it on video. It happens the other way around too, by the way. "Crocodile Dundee II", "Lightning Jack", "Fearless", "Green Card", "Six Degrees Of Separation", "Until The End Of The World" are among many Australian made and/or co-produced films that got a US release ahead of Australia. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "All told, Under The Pink is small but likeably formed; ideal for those herbal-tea moments." - Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian reviewing the new "Victoria Amos" album. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== Date: 11 Apr 94 13:29:08 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: The Billy's, David Wilcox (I posted this to Folk Music but figured ectopeople might be interested as well.) I saw an absolutely phenomenal concert last night in Chicago at Schuba's. I was going to sell these tix but I'm *so* glad I didn't. David Wilcox -- Wow! I had heard he was great live and all the reports were very true. I need not say much about him because everyone here knows already that he is great. All I will say is: I've never seen anyone change tunings *so* *quickly* and *so* *often*. It was unbelievable. I think he even changed tunings on the fly in the middle of a song once. He is just unbelievable. I haven't heard his new album yet, but I got the feeling not all the songs he played were recorded officially. Anyways, if you're into this new folk stuff and you haven't checked out wilcox yet, what're ya waiting for?!! THE BILLY'S -- I had no idea there was an opening act, but boy did we get our money's worth last night. I had not heard these guys mentioned here before, but they will be now. They are from N.C. just like Dave and they happened to be in town the same time as he. The name of their *brand new* CD is "The Time has Come" -- Music played on foraged, found and traditional instruments. They also have an old tape. Send 15.00 for CD, 10 for new tape, 9 for old tape, +1S&H per item to The Billys 95 West St. Asheville NC 28801. Now to the show. It was literally scanvenger music for the PC 90's. They had old pickle barrels, water cooler bottles, boxes and tires and custom jewelry and cookie boxes that they played and played with on stage. There are two Billys: Melanson and Jones. They take turns playing guitar singing and backing vocals. Each song is almost like a performance art number -- lots of audience participation. I felt like I was at a Peter Paul and Mary concert for *adults*. The songs are excellent -- zippy, slow, meaningful and silly -- they cover the whole range. It is virtually a commentary on the state of life in the urban rural wilderness of america -- but more than just a snapshot: a landscape complete with roadkill! The Billys are a blast and must be seen to be believed. (But I did buy the CD and it is great too!) Anyways, enough said. Some of the standout songs are: Chain Letter, Bread, Wichita and Possum. They play stuff they find abandoned on interstates. You gotta love that. She was interviewed (but it was pre-taped, without the appearance of the interviewer), and clips from the "Possession" video were shown. She spoke a bit about how delighted she was now that she's getting airplay, even though she's refused to rewrite her songs for the record company (this is something they used to ask her to do, but she always refused). For all that, I am taking pains to keep current on ecto. After hearing of Kurt Cobain's suicide, it somehow seemed the right thing to do at the time, to listen to Tori's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" after I got home, which I therefore proceeded to do. It was proceeded on the disk by "Winter," which I decided was somehow relevant to the situation of the now-fa- therless young Frances, and therefore also apropos to listen to, so I did. When you lack any Nirvana albums in the jumble, you have to improvise :-). That night, I managed to catch October Project's act on Conan O'Brien's show. They're really good. Very late Saturday, I was watching the video show on channel 50, which ran Tori's "God" video. Good to see she pays homage to the physical and biological sciences so evenhandedly--saluting chemists in the _Under the Pink_ Poster, and zoologists in the aforesaid video. Now, would that she were portrayed doing either participant observation or a sample survey in some future video :-). The other day someone asked about a ST-TNG mailing list. I've never heard of it, but I'm sure the rec.arts.startrek.* hierarchy of newsgroups, particularly r.a.st.misc, will have posters who would know, as well as discussions of many of the same topics that are on that list. But as you said, from then on >the album kind of fades into obscurity for me. prompted by vickie's comments about how much the second side of _solace_ means to her, i've gone back and listened to it some more. by gum, i think she's right! everyone of those songs is wonderful...the only problem is that they don't stick out like the songs on _fte_ do (at least for me). _fte_ is a much more "produced" album. hmmm. maybe "developed" is a better term. the songs on _solace_ are as developed from a lyrical standpoint but they are not as elaborate as the ones on _fte_ and suffer a bit of obscurity as a result. listening to them is intense and wonderful but they don't stick to the brain as much... anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) sez: >I love most of "Touch" - the latter loses me with "Uphill >Battle" and to an extent with "Ben's Song" yeah, "ben's song" is beautiful but i really have trouble bringing myself to listen to it. my feeling about this song was magnified once i saw the video for it - stark and poignant but a wee too much attention for this song. johnh@astro.as.utexas.edu (John Higdon) sez: >Anyway, Friday I attended [Ingrid Karklins'] instore at Waterloo Records >at the recommendation of Woj. It was very brief--about half an hour--but >delectable. glad you enjoyed it! wish i could have been there...sigh. >She played a couple songs off her first CD--one that she called >"the Wolf Song", because the real title is difficult for others to pronounce, "ar vilcinu riga braucsu" which translates roughly as "i rode a wolf to riga" (note that all the i's in song's name are written with a bar across the top of the downstroke, as if signifying a long i in a pronounciation guide). >[Chris Searles] played drums on the first tape of my favorite local >(we'll see how Ingrid stands in the longer run), Michele Solberg. what does michele's music sound like? think that we'd be interested? >He has to be the best drummer in town. yeah, i have to agree that he's pretty incredible. as a drummer wannabe, i pay attention to rhythms and things like that. if rush's neil peart is considered "polyrhythmic" than chris must be polypolyrhythmic. my jaw dropped more than a few times last time ingrid played the buttonwood. >I especially liked >Crack the Slab, from A Darker Passion. It was perhaps the most Happyish, >in that great, disturbing way. wow! you're totally correct - i've never thought much of that before. "crack the slab," despite being the "college hit" from _a darker passion_ never did much for me. i sometimes even skipped over it on the cd. i think i'll be looking at it differentyly now though (her explanation of the song is also intriguing and warranted a second look from me too). >I would say that Ingrid is a cross between a slighty bouncier Happy with >a completely differnt voice, and a Latvian...um...person. :) >One more thing: she played a song called Dreams at the concert. She >said it would be on her next album, which she was already working on. that was one of my faves as well. it's obviously in the working stages but it's still very striking. looking forward to the next album already am i (and i haven't even gotten the second one yet!). Mike Matthews sez: >REM: Fables of the Reconstruction of the Fables of the Reconstruction of >the Fables of the ... I wish they'd make up their mind. Not a bad CD, >but it doesn't compare to their more recent ones IMHO. whoa. that's probably my mostest favoritest r.e.m. album. ever. it's dark, dense, crunchy, engrossing. i'd pick this over _murmur_ anyday. By-Tor Blackwing <96aander@ultrix.uor.edu> sez: >Also, has anyone else tried performing Happy stuff? a group of us did what i think is a fairly good rendition of "poetic justice" at the 1992 KaTemas party in boston. we basically did it as she did it during the live shows following _warpaint_. we also did a few KaTe songs but we liked "poetic justice" the most since it was the easiest (and the most fun!). dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) pans: >Lisa Germano - Happiness last time i was in spain, i brought this with me since i really hadn't given it the proper amount of attention back home. i listened to it a lot but i kinda have to agree with doug - it didn't grab me very much. which is unfortunate as i *really* liked her first solo album a lot. a couple songs are striking like the fun, "you make me want to wear dresses," but the album sorta falls into a haze after a while. i think that this album is worth having around but that you should hold out for a used copyif possible. >I should note that this album will be released on a different label >(Geffen?) in a different form, so this judgement could change. 4ad picked up lisa and is reissuing _happiness_ with, i think, two extra tracks and some remixed tracks. i'm looking forward to seeing what ivo watts-russell and company does with this album. ezust@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (Alan Ezust) sez: >Not that I'd see [Tori] live anyway; I am too disgusted by her record >company's practices, and am unable to bring myself to spend another penny >on her commercial endeavors unless they are full-length CDs. i hope you apply the same buying practices to other artists (such as, say, KaTe) who release dual uk cd singles and the like. personally, i think that it's unfair to single out tori for your boycott (though i am not going to argue this point with you at all).
